@@michaelfapgod4598 Well, she was successful- at least to a degree. Although I don't think it's unfair to say that the being that came out of the spell was somewhat removed from the woman that went into it. Then again, I understand that she was always something of a desperate figure, so perhaps the change was less severe than one might think. Either way, I can't imagine that the leap from mortality to godhood leaves one unchanged.

It also depends on the setting. The early version of her, seen in the Dawn War pantheon, died when the ritual failed and ended up with the then God of Death and the Dead named Nerull. He had some major power, seeing he decided if the other gods got petitioners at all and was also... not a nice god, father of necromancy and all around pretty utilitarian in his evil. Like letting fiends who serve him torture his petitioners in horrible ways, so the fiends don't get too grumpy, because the petitioners were dead anyway and just return to him if they died again... Then the woman who would become the Raven Queen died from ritual sabotage, ended up in Pluton with Nerull, was still bright and defiant (unlike the rest of the broken souls) and he fell in love, made her his queen, and shared his power with her. She didn't like being a trophy wife in torture land, so she figured out how he drew power from the dead in his realm, turned that off for him and all towards herself and proceeded to gank the shit out of him as all the petitioners were set free and put their faith in her. Then she took his place, erased both their names, and the other gods intervined so she was no longer in charge of all the dead and just got to keep Death (because having one god in charge of all the souls was not great for any other god) and she became the Raven Queen. Eventually she moved to the Shadowfell instead, because Pluton is not a nice place. Later on she got Winter as part of her portfolio by helping Corellon kill/banish some evil ice godess and I don't recall how she picked up Fate but I think it was something similar... she is a greedy god who likes adding to her portfolio. Nerull also remains, sort of, in her main temple in the Shadowfell as a consecrated pool of ice-cold blood her priests or people wanting to know stuff about fate can immerse themselves in, which can become addictive and will eventually kill any who keeps doing it as they simply lose all will to live and die of apathy, no longer wanting to eat, drink, sleep, breathe or really anything needed to stay alive... She was pretty cool even before the 5E remix, but I like the Forgotten Realms version.

In the book Elminster in Myth Drannor the way the creating of the mythal was described made it seem like it was done using elven high magic, including the linking of beings, minds, and needing to impart some of their essences... that would somewhat mean that Elminster, a human, did take part in elven high magic, and he was being trained in their magics as well through various elven mentors under the instructions of Mystra.
@JamesJNothingIsTooSensitive

Elven propaganda. It has nothing to do with Elven culture, as there have been human cultures with the same values. They just fear humans gaining the same power. The reason they can do the magic this way is the ability to link minds. Which means all that is required, is psychic ability, or some other means of linking minds temporarily in order to do the spells. High magic isn't special to only elves, which is why they keep it so secret. They *_know_* that others could do it if they knew how, otherwise they wouldn't fear the knowledge getting out.

I seem to remember in the Forgotten Realms series there was a Book ( Elminster in Myth Drannor by Ed Greenwood) about the creation of the Mythal in Myth Drannor. There were Non-Elves included in the ritual for that one. Granted a Chosen of Mystra, the Magister, a Half-elf Archmage, and if I remember correctly a LeShay. None the less it does show that at least some very select few of other races that have ways of gaining extremely long lives are capable of learning the connections to allow them to participate in a Myriad level High magic spell as a spell caster in the second rank, or in the case of Elminster, as a free connection traveling along the web of magic looking for malicious intent and protecting the casters.

@JamesJNothingIsTooSensitive 4 жыл бұрын
@@Recoil1808 Honestly it isn't even just "tend" to teach elves, they "only" teach elves. The only exception being a Chosen of Mystra for obvious reasons. Teaching a non-elf, even a *_half-elf_* is punished by death for both the master and the student. Because a half-elf is too tied to humans and may give the knowledge away. Hell, for a long time it was a secret they even kept from other races of *_elves_* and was one of the major reasons for the Crown Wars. The Drow started it partly because they wanted the secrets of High Magic and the "High Elves" as they called themselves at the time, refused to share. Incidentally, it is why they used to call themselves High Elves, because only their race could work High Magic.
@palladin9479

Yep all that "elves are better then everyone else in every aspect" is pure propaganda. All they are doing is group ritual magic. It's so powerful because the Elves have ridiculously long natural lives to research and push it to that level while leveraging and incorporating their nature sense into it. Humans on the other hand need to resort to extreme measures to extend their lives culminating in some sort of undead existence, that lone makes mastering such complex ritual magic difficult. In theory five arch liches could get together, completely trust each other and have a group of fanatical worshipers to cast the same magic, the probability of that happening would be zero. It's the same reason Dragons don't do high magic even with them being far more attuned to magic and nature then elves.

@@asimovvomisa4040 In concept, basically. Because let's be honest when has a campaign not been derailed entirely??) Ooh! I got one. This is completely compatible with my old rules for Loom of Magus (my campaign universe) rules. All magic above level 9 are 10th level spells. It's a division by 0 thing at that point, level 10 is infinite potential. The level 10 spells with a single caster have a cost, be it casting time to infirmity to sacrifice. Level 10 spells of high effect have lower costs if the power is shared by other spell casters. Elfin High Magic never did the single-caster 10th level spell godlike ability on these. They just did the 10th level spells softly. By the way, that whole becoming the god of magic as the avatar that shattered the Forgotten Realms universe... in Loom of Magus, it would be classified as an unknown cost experimental 10th level spell that the first casting revealed the cost in casting it. 10th level spells = infinite potential in Loom of Magus.

Concept: Rary's Telepathic Bond. It lasts for one hour. 5th level. could likely be used to connect human wizards to a single elf who would connect them to the ritual. Alternatively, Mind flayers could likely achieve similar effects.

You really hit the mark around 23:00 in that this is a framework, more like a setting than a point by point campaign. It specifically states that they can go months (ingame) between major points in the story. What I did was made use of resources like the Forgotten Realms Wiki and Candlekeep and the Forgotten Realms Library websites as well as digging through TOD to research all points between parnast and waterdeep. Sometimes I even found lore dating back to 2nd and 3rd edition to help give me an idea for the history of the towns. For my family I started them off as being from the Dalelands and one of the characters is a wizard who was told to head to waterdeep first then to candlekeep to expand his spellbook. Then brought them across the desert using the DDAL5-02 "The Black Road" which lead into Parnast and DDAL5-01 "Treasure of the Broken Hoard". They just finished that part up. Now they are heading to waterdeep. Along the way they have been seeing and will continue to see all sorts of signs that the Giants are VERY active. I premade several things from the 'random wilderness encounters', particularly the non-combat things for the party to stumble across that also helped re-enforce the giant storyline. That route from Parnast to waterdeep has several points along it that have encounters already in it and it it will be easy to create something in waterdeep that points them to Goldenfields. Though if they prefer to stick in waterdeep we could easily transition to WD-DH and come back to the SKT stuff afterwards (though I'd need to scale up the difficulty for their level). The flexibility of this campaign is what really appealed to me as a DM as I sometimes have a hard time grasping premade NPCs and If I make my own with my own subplots my improve skills are far better. If you want to run LMOP first you could easily point them to Triboar from Phandalin (p.231 has ideas) Anytime the adventures stopped in a town/village that doesn't have much info I strongly recommend using resources like LoreSmyth's Remarkable Inns and Remarkable Shops. There's lots of resources out there to create small things in these towns. Simply the people in that area seeing giant movement that leads/points to the nearest story plot point. It doesn't have to be a fully scripted encounter. I love the advice I got before i started DMing to pregen several NPCs with basic tasks/jobs that you can just drop into any village. Heck you could premake a couple villages in generic terms so no matter where your party goes you can just change the flavor text and it fits wherever they go so you're not caught flatfooted. One thing to do is to talk with the party at the end of each session and get the general idea of where they plan to go so you can be prepared. In the last campaign i finished as a player our DM found out REAL fast that she needed to ask us this, even in roundabout ways, what our plans were so she could prepare. More than once we all Ziged when she expected us to ZAG and was coming up with things on the fly. As a DM don't hesitate to either slow the party down with random encounters or just end a session early if they are heading into an area you're not prepared for. That being said we haven't finished the rest of the campaign so I'm not sure how my players will enjoy the rest of it. I'm just in the planning stages for most of it.

For the elves, Friendship is *High* Magic. Reading about this, and seeing the resemblance between the city on the Spelljammer and the city of Canterlot, along with the Spaarkil who died to make the Spelljammer after singing to younger races in the stars, all contributed to my homebrew setting. It’s a mix between edgy post-multiverse apocalypse (complete with dead or weakened gods and lots of plot threads about their canon failings/downfalls), and wholesome points of light amidst dangerous wastelands, city dungeons, extradimensional mountains, the graveyards and inheritors of the Feywild and many other settings... And the occasional FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC reference and lore tidbit to amuse some players, and leave others in tears. Don’t take it too seriously, even most of the gods and dragons forgot about the pony stuff. Have fun and don’t be afraid to go big and wild with your games! For me, unicorns and ki-rin and their kin just have some seriously tragic Deep Lore that many elves and surviving gods still fight to recover. The “Misty Isles” was the world where Corellon grew up as an elf before the Dawn War and Titan War. etc. ;) EDIT: mustn’t forget the flammable rainbow Phlogiston. That’s paralleled by the flammable (and ultra-spicy) liquid rainbows of Equestria.

the writers of naruto need to make a series in a dnd setting about a wizard who goes through a whole arc (a few seasons) of gaining power and reaching 20th level, just to have a sequal series about realizing how little he knows when he discovers elvish high magic, and then goes on an other arc (an other few seasons) about learning humility and wisdom and patience and all that to learn elvish highmagic. like how in avatar, prince zuko had a whole arc on becoming a warrior and capturing the avatar, but then had an other arc where he learned to be calm and humble and discovered a new way to tap into fire bending. thats actually a really good analogy to a human wizard trying to learn elvish high magic. instead of yelling at the weave and telling it what to do, speaking with the weave and going with the flow.
