I do love the simple lore for slightly out of the box monsters. Some of the more highend like drow and gith lore videos are a little unapproachable. But this fuels well planned and informed monster of the week type encounters and I love it

3:30 I feel it's worth pointing out that 2e, the path to Dis isn't just "near" Tiamat's lair. It's actually *inside* it. Literally a map of Tiamat's Lair from an the book Fires of Dis shows that it has a large central room with a good number of chambers branching off if it: one for Tiamat, one for her hoard, one for each of her five mates. But also located at the back of the central room is the giant iron door that lets into Dis. It wasn't just some abishai in the way. You literally have to walk through Tiamat's living room, passing by her and each of her consorts' bedrooms, to get to Dis. And she's the only one who can open the door.

Start a campaign with a session 0 in which the players list 6 races, 6 classes, and 6 backgrounds, and then unleash the bulette! Every round, the players roll 3d6 to determine which combination of race, class, and background, is eaten, with you narrating the kills. At the end of the 5 rounds, the players have a race/class/background combination mostly at random.

Give them the pseudonatural template or simply add tentacles and now you've got a graboid.

Bulette males really set up an arena of death, fuck on top of the ground up bones, and then leave so the actual event can take place xD I wanna make an encounter where a bard or something found a Bulette doing this and watched, eventually seeing the end result of it all, and now hunts for more Bulette’s to find mating so he can make a spectacle out of watching the ensuing bloodbath

The players can have the options to A: assist in locating a Bulette for the event B: serve as staff members for event itself, as guards or snack sellers or bet takers or what not C: take place in the resulting gladiatorial combat D: end up needing to save the spectators if the mother wins as she will be much more dangerous than a couple babies and likely start rampaging everything nearby

The old afvanced second edition boxed sets had a setting called red steel. In one of its introductory adventures book it had a bulette with insect like wings. Allowing the beast to also fly

Betting the baby bulettes burrow down & eat other subterrain animals like moles & rabbit hutches for a few decades to grow. Also anything that COULD witness young bulettes probably ends up in their stomachs, using ambush tactics to eat quick meals. Imagine a deer being in a grove when a bullet leaps up & gulps it down quickly then back down underground.

From the perspective of the really large and powerful monsters, this thing is very literally the ultimate embodiment of the weird phenomenon of obnoxiously hard to hit and tough small creatures (like turtles in particular, ironically enough!) in Rimworld are disproportionately dangerous, with an obscene ability to maim, mutilate, and outright amputate body parts as it eats you alive or n tiny chunk at a time. It’s no wonder even dragons will hightail it out of there rather than deal with it!

My players got in a big fight. Someone died. They all went to jail. they chose to honor the death of one of the players by planting a magic bean in the dead players mouth (in the jail cell. This in turn spawned a burette out of their corpse (based on the table to roll). Fighting a bulette while trapped in a tiny jail cell was chaotic as can be

In Races of Stone 3.5 (the same book that introduces goliaths into 3.5), there are rules for hatching, raising, and training a bulette. It even has prices for buying bulette eggs and fully trained bulettes.

Any recommendations for a red dragon/Bulette mix? Mini boss for a game I'm running. I'd give it wings and fire breathing, and that'd be plenty but I could use other ideas.
