the reason is because dragons don't have "materials" whatever you harvest from a dragon is depending on your DM. DND isn't monster hunter after all and there isn't a selection of things you can get from every creature. especially since fighting a creature usually destroys those materials

@@joedatius As far as it goes with DnD, has a ton of variety of adventures and stories, like dungeon exploring, to participate in wars and sieges, even quest for relics and forgotten spells, there is no reason for monster hunting not be there, as there is a lot of monster you can fight in an adventure, even if they are dangerous

TSR was far more forthcoming on this. And dragons DO have materials. Their whole body. You can harvest every shred of their body that you didn't slash/pierce to infinity and back. In fact, I know older editions even specified exactly how much damage you could do with slash/pierce weapons before ruining the dragon's scales too badly to make armor from it etc., Anything that you didn't destroy in combat is there for the taking... it's a corpse not a mystery treasure chest.

Same here I've got a campaign based around the idea that pale night made a demiplane tethered to the abyss that before it could be fully corrupted by the abyss was populated by The Lady of pain and wanderers from the infinite staircase. At this point there is one continent populated by humanoids and creatures like any other material relm if that's really what it was. Now pale night with aide from baphomet and zuggotmoy are attempting to rein this run away demiplane back under demonic controle while the gods, brought here by there followers try and wretch away one of the last remaining havens in a multiverse that's seen every other material relm swallowed by the abyss.

Obyriths are the most interesting thing about the Abyss, a pity they are buried behind all other lore in hell and more common and newer demons.

It took a while, but we eventually got some stuff on them in both 3rd edition (in Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss) and in 4th edition (in The Plane Below - Secrets of the Elemental Chaos), it wasn't much mind you, but that is what is required for the Obyriths to be believable ancient horrors that feel like they would be right at home in Lovecraft's Mythos. Of course, it helps that one of them is literally from the Mythos (that being Dagon). But what we got was quite enough for me to think that Pale Night was clearly the coolest of them. When you encounter her, she looks like a beautiful lady of indeterminable race, veiled only in semi-transparent cloth and mists. However, should you manage to catch a glimpse of her true form if the veils part, well, you'd better have a really good will save. If you succeed, you are rendered blind and your brain deletes what you saw from your memory. If you fail.... Well, time to roll up a new character, because your character is now incurably insane of the gibbering fool variety. And when I say incurable, I mean it. Not even godly intervention or the most powerful wish spell will restore the character, their mind is *gone*.

It's actually true. It is said in Mordekainen's Tome of Foes that abyssal influence corrupts material plane. If a portal to Abyss is open too long, territory around it will change to a landscape closer to abyssal, and more tears in reality will spawn until the whole world become a new layer of the Abyss.

The Obyrith are clearly a Lovecraft influence of the Great Old Ones, especially Dagon which HPL used directly, and has mythos references to ancient Syria, and also in the bible. Same with Pazuzu, who has mythology roots from the Mesopotamian cultures. But of all the Obyrith , it's Pale Night that creeps me out the most, because of the threatening ambiguity. You just know that if you ever got a peek under that bedsheet she goes around in, that you'll be rendered a permanent asylum resident from the sight of her sheer horrifying beauty...assuming that you even survive it.

The abyss is likely the most written about outer plane. I chalk this up to human nature and scary things being like moths to a flame. There's even a tavern in sigil with many alu-fiend and cambion workers that specializes in selling abyssal "tours" where rich patrons can buy a taste (a very tiny sip) of the abyss. They leave with tales of the (manufactured) horror they saw. Occasionally one or two get dragged off but too many would be bad for business so most make it back relatively safely... all carrying a new seed of evil in their minds to where ever their home worlds are. There they produce things like squid games to try and recreate that abyssal feelings. Truly a beautiful and majestic plane 😍. If there's something in this universe that you wish would tear your head off, spit down your throat and use your corpse as an object... its there and your not thinking grand enough!

The closest ruling I liked by a DM was that a dragon we had killed could only provide enough scales for one medium creature's armor. The explanation was that due to the sheer amount of damage done, and our combined lack of knowledge about descaling a dragon, we ruined a *lot* of the materials.

Great video. You really tied all these disparate elements together into a single cohesive timeline. That's a huge project and I'm so impressed. I was under the impression that Demons were spawned from the Abyss itself.
@MrRhexx
@MrRhexx 2 жыл бұрын
Technically there are demons that are not Tana'ri yeah, though d&d doesn't really delve too deep into them. The word infinite is also probably a bit deceiving. A billion demons would look like an infinite number of demons to anyone, and then there's also the fact that the abyss might get new souls faster than it takes for ppl to kill the demons; i guess you could also technically call that infinite.
@elegantoddity8609
@elegantoddity8609 2 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure it's not actually infinite but more effectively so. There's no way to count them all since the layers are so factitious that they can absorb each other and end up splitting apart, and new ones can show up, so the number is always in flux. Also only some demons come from humanoid souls.
@TheHighestNoon
@TheHighestNoon 2 жыл бұрын
@@elegantoddity8609 Yes but Tanari are the majority of demons and it's literally only Chaotic Evil souls that fail to go to the realm of their chosen Deity for whatever reason.... That's going to be hardly any. Maybe the Shard of Pure Evil is stealing souls from countless other planes? Because otherwise I can't see why there would be any more Demons than Angels or Devils.
@TheHighestNoon
@TheHighestNoon 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrRhexx That's something I never really understood clearly, either. When a humanoid dies, doesn't their soul go to their chosen Deity? Devils get souls via contracts and corruption, but how do Demons get them?
@elegantoddity8609
@elegantoddity8609 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheHighestNoon Well not everyone in the dnd multiverse goes to a deity. Forgotten Realms setting has that stupid Wall of the Faithless for non believers but that doesn't apply to every world. In others you die and you go to the plane of most like alignment. I think the tanar'ri are most numerous because souls are much more "fertile" than a plane of pure entropy. It has something to work with and there's a whole universe of them to work with. The obyriths also suffered from bad life choices which drastically reduced their numbers before they got genocides several times. As for why demons outnumber everyone else, it's partially because they don't play by any rules. They don't bargain for souls, they straight up take them, dragging them off to the Abyss. Devils invade, demons infect. And good beings have a concern for free will that fiends don't share.

Fun fact about 16:05 - there was actually one single Demon Lord among the Obyrith who did not swear fealty to the Queen of Chaos and chose to ignore her call to war, and even she didn't choose to attempt to force him. Dagon, Prince of the Depths is actually venerated as a god among the Kraken, the hags, and kuo-toa and water naga. Not sure if you were familiar with that little tidbit.

A brief thing I should mention Mrrhexx since I noticed it in your pdf shown in the video. You Irondrake Golem (which I love the idea of by the way) has both resistance and immunity to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from non-magical weapons that aren't Adamantine, and was wondering if that was a mistake or not, as I don't think something can have both an immunity and resistance, as immunity means it wouldn't take any damage while resistance means it takes half. Other than that, I always enjoy your series and love learning more about dnd lore, so thanks for another fun video😊

I love the concept of the Abyss. All my characters in d&d worship a primordial "god" that to me strongly ties with chaos. One of it's avatars is off the coast of Waterdeep. Even though it is not called an avatar in the cannon source material it still feels like one so I treat it as one. I even have a list of Deities that are effectively just different names for this being. I mention this only because while you where talking about the shard it reminded me of the deep crimson shard born of this being and used to wake the avatar from it's slumber.

I absolutely love the abyss and it's demons because of its infinite potential. Every demon, even the lowliest manes can one day become a demon prince and since there are infinite layers, there are infinite demons and infinte demon princes

Immediately got the PDF! It's awesome! I am really loving the rules for dragon parts as one of my campaigns heavily features dragons. And in any campaign I play or run if the players down a dragon the first thing they want to do is turn it into weapons and armor.

@@joedatius please explain because I will pull it or change it if you can help me see why it would be. Berserk was huge for me, and I have reading the Manga since the 90s. The subject matter is in regards to beasts that are superficially similar to the apostles. The last line was a reference to the opener of original anime, and the fact that Berserk will not be completed by him

Hey would you be willing to do a Fey series next, or a least a video on the Feywild/Feydark? I remember it almost won the poll back when you did the Shadowfell, and had nearly the same amount of votes. I love how wild and unpredictable nature of the Fey/Feywild is, and love how crazy and unpredictable both themselves and their abilities are. Love your channel!

That was awesome! And I'll definitely buy a copy of your Dragon Hoard off, in the coming days! I don't play D&D so much, these days, as I create Villian/Ally/Patron concepts, for some friends and aquatintances that do! My favorite beasties being Dragons, Demons, Devil's and Fae! Your videos, along with AJ's, have been a huge help! And are very enjoyable! I always look forward to them! And I hope that you enjoyed your week off, with a visit from family, if I recollect right? 😁

Big fan of your channel, the lore is incredible. By the way, could you eventually make a video about the Lady of Pain? All I know about her comes from that old game, Planescape Torment, and I found it awesome that she could just kill you and end the game in a second if you broke her rules.

dragons hoard magic items due to their inherent value, dragons by all means are prideful and the idea of them using magic items that they haven't made since they're you know... dragons. makes perfect sense. a dragon can cast powerful spells naturally so why use a staff or wand, a dragons claws can rip through armor with ease so they don't need weapons, a dragon is one of the fastest flyers in the realms so it doesn't need boots of flying. a dragon magical by nature and powerful by birth. i feel when you try to add random items and such it takes away from what dragons are, and thats their existence being purely powerful just on their own.
