The trend I see in Florida, is repowering old, big boats (24-35') by adding a pod, or hull extension engine brackets. What are the best budget large CID 2 strokes? How about early 4 strokes? Thank You.

Problem today is that few dealer shops will service a boat with a outboard or sterndrive that is more than 10 years old. Even if the boat has a mercury or a mercruiser.

Never had that issue. I can bring my 1977 Johnson 15hp to my local mercury dealer and they will service it. They are open about the fact that I won’t like the price due to them not being a Johnson/evinrude dealer but they will do it. If you have a shop that refuses the work then find a better shop. Simple as that

I was burned for $8500 on a 2010 250xs. Compression test was good but he didn't tell me he wrecked his boat over revving the motor either cracking a wrist pin or stretching a rod and as soon as I mounted it to my boat it sent a rod to the moon. Other than that visually is was a clean motor.

This is definitely a fresh water bass boat centric channel. Let me throw out a couple of other thoughts, a bone to the Saltwater guys. First question (most important) , is this run on saltwater or freshwater (get a bigger discount if run on saltwater). Drive inland to source you next repower, they were either 1) Run in freshwater or 2) driven less to the coast to drive in saltwater. Check the spark plug tips they will tell you a variety of things. Check all fluids for water intrusion. Check zincs, they will tell you how often the individual did maintenance and/or used the motor (some motors have hours logged in the onboard computer). One obscure item. Don’t buy a motor with a big pitched prop 1) the owner has run it an average at higher RPMs (lower longevity) 2) the owner probably has cavitated (over RPM’d) the motor a few times. 3) In your application the prop likely won’t work and you will have the added costs of a new prop. When you buy a motor it’s very important to know what extras are added: prop, throttle, key switch, instruments, etc., the costs add up fast and you can’t always use what you already have. As a caveat to instruments, I have ditched my instruments and bought a $99 NMEA cable on Amazon and use GPS displays, far more data to include things such as fuel pressure, water temp, fuel flow, etc, etc, etc. I guess that starts making computer controlled 4 strokes cheaper than 2 strokes. Especially if you have saltwater boats with fuel tank indicators(GPS units can take fuel flow and calculate total fuel burned, more accurate than a bouncing fuel tank needle), added on fuel flow transducers and so on.

Sold my 17 skeeter zx225 last year and I wish I didn't, bc prices are out of control. Now I am boat less, not fishing and angry bc of these prices. Paid 54k new in 17 , Same boat now is 74k with same electronics or less. 50k should buy you a 20ft tournament ready with 12 inch screens and power poles period. You said it right..." it all the same stuff as before. " You would think they would not ask so much and much it up on quantity and loans for new boats. Thx for the great content.

It is unreal. 20k for an 02 pro v with green carpet!? It’s actually not cool how inflated these prices are. A guy should be able to get a quality used boat for under 20k. If boats were a stock they would be at an all time high right now. Never seen anything like it. Doesn’t seem like people are moving these boats either. They just sit there unsold. I don’t get it.

Mercury kicked many customers dead in the taint ! The 2000 model 25hp is a grenade. Previous to 2000 they couldn't be beat in the green timber runs. Unless you got an extra good power head off earlier model laying around stay away from 2000 model merc 25 . Was told later models were done right. Can't say for sure I never rolled the dice on another mercury. 😥

Is it just me or do all of these Opti's and ProXS Merc's indicate an unrealistic amount of hours on the ECM ? It's almost as if the "clock" is programmed to turn minutes into HOURS after a certain point. Most of these people don't spend 32 hours per week fishing......yet the ECM indicates over 40 hours of run-time on the outboard.......So they never stopped to fish????? Bullshit! Hell they seldom get more than 10 miles from the ramp for crying out loud. I suspect a conspiracy 😅 If a person puts 200+ hours per year on their outboard then how much are they spending on fuel & oil ? It doesn't add up. You should be putting more hours on your trolling motor than you do on your outboard. No?

I bought a used 1997 Johnson Venom 200, guy said it ran good and it fired right up on muffs when I arrived. I brought a compression tester and found one cylinder had 0 compression. Ended up getting it for pretty much scrap price because he thought it was running good but I showed him otherwise. Got it home and turns out it threw a rod through the rear crank cover. Replaced the piston, rod, bearings and rear cover and gaskets for $300 bucks. Been running great for awhile now.

E-Tecs truly have become the number one “stay away from “ motor. People who have them I tell them keep it for now if they want but as soon as anything expensive happens dump it. Because they only get worse. EMM’s are always an issue even on the later models and they are expensive and becoming hard to get. G2’s are right there behind them with a list of issues. Every single one at our marina has had warranty work.

@@EmergeFromTheAshes1 agree that that smaller ones seem to have less trouble. The v6’s are just awful. There about as many good etecs as there are bad Yamahas

@@andrewkelly9275 kinda sad tbh. Really good tech just poor execution. I think if they would have partnered with mercury we would have a reliable clean 2 stroke on the market still. I have a 90 etec myself and I'm glad it's not one of the big ones. The 3 cylinder and 2 cylinder ones all seem to have a good reputation. Got lucky almost bought a 150 🤣
@andrewkelly9275
@andrewkelly9275 Жыл бұрын
@@EmergeFromTheAshes1 I feel like they just didn’t try hard enough. From the perspective of someone who works on them they just didn’t do things very well. I think they should never have continued the technology once Brp bought them. They should have invested into 4 stroke they would still be in the game right now. The Japanese outboards are no comparison. Well put together and easy to service. Mercury’s arnt a bad motor they just don’t compare to the Yamahas and Suzukis as far the reliability and how they are to work on. Mercury has some nice running engines and i wouldn’t hesitate to run one in certain applications. But in my world saltwater and fishing a ways offshore it’s gonna be a one of the offerings from Japan. They just plain make better outboards overall. Hopefully that changes though !

@@andrewkelly9275 ya I wish I could go back and do it over. I wouldn't likely go yamaha just because of the price of the SHO compared to the price of the susuki ss. I originally was going to order my boat with a 115 SS but this one at the dealer was bang on how I wanted it but with the 90 etec and was cheaper than if I ordered a new one. Hind sight I wish I just ordered the boat with the 115 SS. Hopefully my etec ends up being solid 🙏

lol your nuts thinking that people are going to let a unknown individual take there boat to a shop of their choice I’ve bought a lot of boats over the years the most I’ve ever had a seller do is hook muffs and I’ve sold lots of boats I’m not letting you take it to a shop just like a dealer won’t with a used boat and I’m not interested in doing lake test for insurance reasons and for the fact the half these buyers just want to see how a type of boat handles and have no interest in actually buying they just waist your time and fuel.
