What to Do After Finding Deer Sign in the Woods

Learning why deer are in a specific area is critical to understanding how to hunt them. They're not just moseying through for no reason. If you discover tracks and trails, rubs, scrapes or other signs of consistent activity then you definitely need to figure out why they're there and whether to hunt there or nearby. In this episode of Hunt 'em Big, Steve Bartylla explains how asking why when you see deer sign is a superb hunting tactic.

I’ve got 50 acres most of it is cow field, and it’s definitely not pressured. I’ve got 2 does on different sides of the property that have twins every year but after summer they disappear

Nicholas Dean , February seed the fields with red & white Clover if allowed set out a salt block on a area you do not hunt but close to the fields , if you have a small water hole that helps Deer only drink on very hot days Green grass and other foliage they get water you will see deer drink but not like cows or horses . The Fawns at 1 year find a home , about 40 acres per doe . The Rut they start to hurd up 6 or 7 doe will run together.

I love the channel but do you have any videos out there for the rest of us that don't have 2000+ acres of land taylored to deer? I live in the city so all I've got is public land. See how stupid those year in a half old bucks are when your lucky to even see a fawn. I don't even care about bucks, antlers don't taste very good anyways. Show me how to get a year old doe on public land and then I'll be impressed. Thanks for the videos.

That only covers a part of it , Go out after Gun season is over find the big rubs and huge scrapes , Big bucks tend to use the same trails year after year in the same area , they know the best bedding area and food source and use the same trails back and forth , they may move 50 yards or so , but they seem to use the same trails , for 20 years I hunted deer doing the after season scooting , set up in july come back in Sep or Oct and it has paid off for bow , and come back in Nov and got a second buck , 20 years and Kill 100 to 150 class bucks proof is on my wall . I only kill doe the last part of season if I did not get my big buck , but this season of gun I did not see my big buck but I know he seen me . getting busted is ok because Dec M/L he will still be in the area . If he is killed by a hunter im ok with that . But it will be at the end of the season I take a Doe , not till the last 3 days of hunting season. I have hunted Michigan Missouri and Texas . Im 57 years old , Most of my hunting is on State land not big farms or private land . It is hard to hunt with 200 other guys going in out and walking around . hunt spots the other guys over look . stay away from the camp fires guys use for a week of Gun they hunt a few hundred yards away from camp . Snow I know most southern states do not get it , but if you get snow after gun season that is a great help in finding the fall movements Fall is Oct to Dec 20th in my area Dec Jan Feb is winter. then it starts spring March till may, then the summer hits that is why I set up in July. cut tree limbs and underbrush in july deer have time to calm down .

JCcanU I strongly agree. Mature bucks tend to use the same trails, feed and bed the same places year after year. I hunt on both. Activity on public. Its really no different compared to private ground.
