What to do if your child has a seizure.
It's important for all caregivers to know how to manage a seizure.
There are many types of seizures. The most common is fever-related, called a febrile seizure. They happen most often in six month to six year olds.
First, stay calm, so that you can provide effective help. Then focus on preventing injury that may result from the seizure.
Stay close to the child but don't hold them down. Move any objects that are sharp or hard; and, if your child will let you, roll them onto their side so fluids drain out of their mouth.
Now make them as comfortable as possible. Take off glasses or anything that is hard. Take off any tight clothing, especially around the neck. Then put something soft, like a folded jacket or sweater, under their head. Keep bystanders away from the child.
Watch to see how long the seizure lasts, and note how your child looks and moves so you can give the doctor an accurate report later.
For example:
Seizure Checklist...
- Time and duration (How were the child's eye moving?)
- Eye movements (Were they turned in one direction, or looking straight ahead?)
- Parts of the body that moved (Which part of the body was shaking?)
- Movements symmetric? (Were the movements symmetric?)
Don't give the child water, food, or medication until the seizure is over and the child is fully alert. They may be drowsy or confused for a while after the seizure. Stay calm, low key and be reassuring.
Even if the seizure stops, it's a good idea to take your child to the doctor or to the emergency department for assessment.
If you're alone with the child, call an ambulance -- you don't want to risk having the seizure recur, while you're driving and the child is alone in the back seat.
All children who've had a seizure should be assessed by a doctor.
Finally, let's dispel some myths around seizures.
First, it's not true that a child can swallow their tongue. Also, seizures with fever don't cause brain damage, nor are they caused by brain damage. A child with febrile seizures will grow out of that tendency, usually by age six.
- Stay calm
- Take notes
- Get medical attention
It's important you stay calm if your child has a seizure, make them as comfortable as possible, and take notes about how long the seizure lasts, and how your child moves.
With any seizure, get medical attention as soon as you can.
Key points:
• Stay calm, that will keep your child calm
• Keep your child safe and comfortable
• Monitor how long the seizure lasts and how your child moves

My 4 year old son had this for the first time Monday. We were at the dentist getting his teeth cleaned. He was med flight to children's hospital. 1.15 minutes away. As a daddy by far the scariest thing that has ever happened to me. We came home today from ICU. He's fine like nothing ever happened. My prayers go out to anyone that has to ever indoor anything of this nature . God bless
