PUMP HACK…How to change the infusion set ONLY when it gets ripped off or there is a bent cannula, and you still have insulin in your cartridge.

I wish I had seen this two weeks ago when a bent cannula created a high blood sugar crisis when I was hundreds of miles away from a substitute infusion set. I was on a one day work trip when it happened. I know now I will go nowhere without an extra Auto Soft XC or two in my backpack. Thanks, Alejandra! I have each of your videos containing valuable tips and techniques, and this one is especially valuable!

Thank you, I was running high and correcting like crazy …. I disconnected the tubing from my infusion site and ran a couple of drops through the tubing so knew it was fine….I still had 158 units in my reservoir so didn’t want to waste it, I pulled my infusion site off and the cannula was bent at the tip… so instead of replacing the whole thing I followed your video….I use Medtronic and very new to pumping but basically the same thing….thank you

My daughter just put on a new infusion set and it started coming out a couple of hours later. I wish I would have thunk to research this sooner; but now we know we don't need to change the cartridge, fill the tubing etc in a case like this. We will know better next time. She's only had her pump for six weeks and we've used your videos from the beginning to get the process down right. I say "we" as she is developmentally disabled and needs some guidance with the process. I'm hoping that she'll be able to troubleshoot herself at some point. Your instruction has been invaluable. Thank you so much.

Your an awesome trainer! I went thru another trainer n did not do an actual demo.the second time she did via phone with kids in background n could not complete the training n got upset when i asked to come in n never called me.thank u sooo much for the step by step!

At 5:42 you say you're going to connect this new infusion site to this new infusion set. I think what you mean it that you're going to connect the new infusion site to the OLD infusion set (so that you don't waste the insulin in the old infusion set). And you still need to fill the cannula.

Agreed. This is a great clip for explaining why canulas might be getting bent or kinked in the first place. However, you really do need to remember to prime your new canula!

What if my cartridge still has 120units but it's time to change the canula AND tubing. Do I need to tell the pump to stop pumping temporarily before removing the tubing? And shouldn't I do it where it connects to the pump instead of at the site? Aren't you supposed to fill the canula before it is attached to your body? Or has that changed?

Thanks for the video. I use the tru-steel infusion set. If you have a new cartridge and the tru-steel gets yanked out, Can you insert the tru-steel somewhere else without changing the whole infusion set?

I,m new to the pump 45 days now. I am so frustrated and discouraged using the pump. I was trained on the pump 3/8/22. Things were fine those first 4 days. Changed my sight 1st my self with help of trainer on the phone on 3/12. At 5:30 pm. By 11 pm my BS were 486. Turns out cannula was kinked. Since then I have learned something’s. Twice since then I have had kinked cannula and twice had sites just go bad in 2 days and BS go high vary quickly. Not always able to change out site immediately. So guess what BS High 380+ and takes forever to bring myself back down. I am now trying the auto soft 90. I am so gun shy now that I just want to go back to shots. Simple and easy.

Hopefully I don't go down that road more..Had my 400 BG surprise at 3am...changed site but had to shoot manually, so now I'm waiting out the Lymajeve 10 units to flush through & get me back to earth plus can't get the device to lock back and "fire" have to hold it up & back and let it go myself..grrrrrr

So once you connected everything do you then go into the tandem pump and just do a fill cannula part of the loading sequence? Would love know if there is a way to change just the cartridge without changing the site. Thanks for the video, very informative.

Yes, Robert. Just go to LOAD, but ONLY select "Fill Cannula" and that will provide the insulin needed to fill the new cannula. You can do just the cartridge, but with the Autosoft sets, you would be "wasting" the infusion set anyways because the tubing is already connected to the infusion set itself. Since the cartridge has that small pig tail with some tubing, you can't just get the new cartridge and connect to the existing tubing because you will be left with a big gap or air in your line. This is mainly for unplanned situations, because if you are changing your cartridge and infusion set on alternative days, you will feel like you are constantly doing something with the pump. Its nice to do it every 3 days and have some time in between to not think about it. Makes sense?

@@alejandracordovez9391 yes that makes sense. I always do everything at the same time and not bother with it until the cartridge runs out. If I have infusion site issues like a bent cannula I can follow your video or if I think I have old insulin problem then I should change everything anyway, not just the cartridge. I didn’t think about the problem of having air in the short section of tubing from the cartridge to the connector.Thanks for the info!

One cannot prime the canula before inserting it. The small amount air isn't a problem. Probably because the air is going into tissue and not a vein or artery.

Note- this didn’t work for me because I started with a true steel needle first- then I tried to attach an infusion soft Xc as the replacement and it didn’t work- the ports wouldn’t marry- so it seems to me you need the same type of needle replacement as the one you started with - that is the only way this will work

@@AdamGrant-rh3tg of course. If your infusion sets tend to fall off due to adhesive issues a skin prep is a great first line of defense. If that doesn’t work you can the add some type of over patch as well to ensure that it stays in for 2-3 days as needed.

You should be changing out your infusion sets every three days. This hack is in the event that your infusion sets falls off, or the cannula gets kinked prior to your three day change out. It is important to rotate sites to avoid developing scar tissue, which will lead to decrease insulin absorption down the road.

If changing cartridge, not site how can you NOT waste 10.2 units putting insulin in tubing. Cartridge tubing is so short. It seems such a waste of insulin.

Unfortunately, there is no work around this. Every time you change the cartridge, you do have to complete that min fill tubing requirement.

You did not show filling the cannula You can't leave that off of the video it's important because people are filling a new cannula on their body. So they have to do it correctly or they can give themselves in trouble by accidentally taking too much insulin redo your video please otherwise it was all great but you can't forget filling the cannula!!!!!!!!

it's 0.7 units of insulin and your comment is bullshit, if your concern was an actual concern and not just bullshit, it would mean the user would miss out on potential insulin resulting in high blood sugar - not "taking too much insulin".
