We just finished our 2 days in Colombo, and tomorrow we're heading South to Mirissa, but I wish I'd seen your video a few days ago. We just learned the metered tuktuk trick today after a whole lot of walking and a few very weird Ubers. Tuktuks can be such a rip-off if you're a tourist (one guy quoted us 1800 rupees for a 5 km drive!), but the meter makes all the difference :D

Ho let's go! Wow that's a rip off! Yea beware of the ones down south, it's hard to find a metered one. I wrote a blog post about my tuk tuk experience after colombo if you want to read about it. Metered ones are difficult to find in other parts of the country, but not a lot of drivers will quote such crazy amounts. Always ask for the price before getting in.

normally for a Tuktuks for locals it only takes 300 rupees for a 5 km drive, because 1 km= 60 rupees

This might be the rate for Colombo, but on other parts of the country (like Kandy) it costs much higher (at least 450 for a 5km ride).

That's a massive rip of. 5 km should cost 250 - 300 max. They launched 500 tourist friendly tuks in colombo and you can try them the next time you visit!

Hey Jennifer, there are many temples in Colombo that you can visit for free. Check Google Map and then you can see them. I think it is not good to charge to enter into a temple.

Tuk tuk drivers will rip you off so search online for metered ones. Make sure u tell them to switch the meter on before starting to ride and there shouldn't be a callout fee.

But still I prefer to explore out of Colombo. Staying in Colombo is a waste of time. There are beautiful places like Galle in down South ,Ella in hill country and Ancient temples in Anuradhapura.

Nice programme about Sri Lanka. Most of the people are good in there. But some of them are so bad. So be careful about that.
