In this video, I address the common problem of what to do when you can’t tilt your head backward (look up).

After releasing a video post on How to Quickly Fix a Kink in Your Neck (www.thephysicaltherapyadvisor..., I received positive feedback on KZfaq about how simple and effective the method I demonstrated was to self-treat a painful stiff neck. This method helped to fix the problem with looking left and right, but viewers began to ask what they should do if they can’t look up without pain.
In this video post, I address the common problem of what to do when you can’t tilt your head backward (look up). This initially can be challenging to treat (even more challenging than fixing turning or rotating your head), but with these two self-treatment strategies you might be able to get some relief.
Most important, your posture matters. Poor posture puts your neck in an extended and compromised position. Your upper thoracic is a critically in maintaining proper cervical mobility (including the ability to look up).
The key to eliminating pain is to improve the mobility of the thoracic spine, so the neck and shoulders no longer have to compensate for the lack of thoracic mobility. In this video, I demonstrate the McKenzie method for cervical retractions in order to improve your neck motion. This secondary technique, called the side bend with rotation, may also help you to look up without pain if the problem is in your upper cervical area. I highly recommend the following book, Treat Your Own Neck (www.amazon.com/gp/product/098..., by Robin A. McKenzie.
Ideally, you should be able to self-treat your problem of not being able to tilt your head up by improving your posture (with my recommended foam roller mobilizations and stretches) in addition to using these two techniques (cervical retractions and the side bend with rotation) that I demonstrate in the video.
If you’re not experiencing relief after trying these self-treatment techniques, contact your local physical therapist for an assessment and help in managing the condition. I cant believe I'm actually saying this fixed days trying to heal neck pain in just 4 mins. I was having really bad neck pain. I couldn't move my head. It was so bad I couldn't lay my body down. I just moved my head along with the video and i felt instant healing. Thank you so much.

Amazing. Been locked up for 2 weeks and thrown every stretch I can at it. This loosened me up back to almost 90% mobility in minutes

I did some stretches suggested in other videos before so my muscles were already warm, but my neck was still hurting when looking up. These exercises though worked! Great thumb up!

Hello, I have symptoms of tmj and it is affecting my neck, I can’t look up without my neck straining and also my neck has been pushing forward making it seem like a have a double chin even tho I am underweight, if you could me advice that would be great.

Mixed feelings. /: I get upper neck pain (base of skull) when looking straight up which just started happening for a couple of days. However the right side of the neck has been hurting for about 3-4 weeks now. Anyone have other exercises that might tackle the pain when looking up?

When I pick up my head the back of my neck is stiff and my throat feels tensed up when I lift my head up also, having trouble moving my head side to side as well. Can it be herniated?

@@joegonzalez1024 Yes, those can be signs of a herniation. But not necessarily. Chin retractions as demonstrated can be helpful. See medical attention if you get numbness or loss of strength in your arms.

Hello I wanted to ask are there ways to permanently cure my neck pain with medication or chiropractic massages? My history of long hours of gaming on my phone looking down and also low confidence at school is affecting my life now Even if I look down for just 30 minutes it causes pain all day I don’t know how to get rid of this I’m not even 25 yet.... Please suggest me on what to do or cure it permanently

I was doing incline press and my upper right back/shoulder tweaked somehow. Now I cant turn my head to the right. Hopefully this helps.
