As an old washed up colt man I can say amen to you can’t fix an egg broke in you. Several years ago I had a big down 5 year old that bucked me off 5 times in 3 months and the last time he hurt me enough I just couldn’t get on him again . Up until that time for the last 50 years and several thousand colt I thought I was a pretty curly wolf ,and it’s pretty humiliating to sent a horse down the road because you’re mentally unable to get on him again . Now I’m 62 and don’t have answers but have questions. Happy Mother’s Day to your wife

If you haven't ever been bucked off you haven't ever rode nothin. Cracks me up when I hear people say they've been riding all of their lives and have never been bucked off. Oh ok so I got your number, you haven't been around the block more than once and if you have you were riding grandma's Buttercup at a walk and done nothing more than trail riding. I've had two real bad s.o.b's in my life, both coyote bastards that definitely meant to buck me off on purpose with real bad intentions like they had a mountain lion on their backs and their lives depended on it. This needs to be evaluated before you purchase and before you get on. One was a real bad halter puller the kind that would rip the D ring out of the side of your trailer. The other was a really well bred quarter horse with Grays Starlight and Hancock breeding, beautiful body. The thing they both had in common was they both had smaller pig eyes and 3 to 4 years old. I now look for horses that have a nice large kind eye with the wrinkles on the upper lid. Those are usually kind and trainable. I heard a world class trainer say once that if he would change anything that he had done in the past with his training he would ride fewer and better horses and not be so proud thinking he was such a great trainer could make a horse out of a jackass. I've been bucked off really hard more times than I would care to admit being that I went to war with the first horse for 7 years trying to make a horse out of a jackass. Stubborn pride. He won 33% of the time. I've also had a horse flip over backwards on me and crushed my pelvic area and yes I got back on, had no insurance and didn't go to the hospital. Was crippled for two weeks. If you aren't tough by nature with a lot of wisdom and pride then seek help or your life could be ruined by your passion. I got smart dropped my pride and eventually sent both of them down the road. I'm now riding very fine well bred animals and enjoying life. Yes it's still dangerous here and there but not near what it was. Life is short, ride excellent horses, they all cost the same to feed so you might as well feed a good one. A famous jockey once said "I don't fall off horses I was thrown". So no I don't just fall off horses. Hope you all stay centered in the saddle. Real fond of my bear trap til they get good and broke.

In 63 years of riding I think I've been bucked of only a couple of times. On the other hand I have fallen off way too many times! Usually if I step back and analyze what really happened, I fell off.... it doesn't make it easier to get back on most times but when I place the blame where it truly belongs I can usually laugh at my own wrong and not blame the horse.

Truly wise words. So much of being a good leader for your horse is the mental aspect. I 've got a couple people in my life who "had their egg broke". One was my oldest daughter, and it kills me that she can't find the joy in riding that I am absolutely dependant upon.

I usually start off by wetting my pants then immediately begin saying the following words “mommy mommy help me mommy it hurts so bad mommy” I then avoid finding my hat for a good while till my pride takes over and then I climb back on.

I’m 63 and had hopefully had my last buck off a year ago on a new mare…totally my fault, had to learn she’s chinchy and did not appreciate over tight cinching AND the saddle was too narrow. Got right back on. Stayed calm checked the equipment. It wasn’t like I wasn’t trying.. went through three saddles before I got her fitted… little booger takes a DRAFT size tree. Once I hit the mark everything’s peachy!😆

just got bucked off a few days ago. it’s easy to blame everything else but myself and my timing. Tres pasos and I got back in the saddle. My Eggs are not broken yet 😅

What if you get hurt badly like cracking your pelvice and couple of ribs🤣I totally agree with you on horse is scared..... Anyway it's has been year of recovery and building trust and relationship with my horse. It has been revording and actually enjoyable. Will get back on when time is right. I am 73 and not ready to give up. Thank you for your wise words.

My filly threw me for the first time on Easter cause I wanted to see how she’d do bareback. Turns out her summer coat ain’t made of rosin. She separated my collar bone, as in severed all the connective tissue holding it to anything important. I think a lot of people would have a takeaway in this situation to be afraid of the horse. My takeaway was to be afraid of doing something dumb again. You can make precautionary measures to assure yourself that if something happens, it wasn’t your fault.

I just got my two year back from the trainers after two months. I had ridden her up at his place last weekend and she was great. My round pen was so wet from all the rain we have had in East Texas I just walked her around 5-6 times and re cinched her. I got on her and didn’t even have time to get my right boot in the stirrup and she was bucking. After three good bucks she threw me. Just glad I didn’t get thrown into the side of the round pen counts have done some damage. At 62 I was kinda lucky it was pretty muddy landed on my shoulder and head. I will definitely lunge her next time.

Here is why you are so correct: I know a guy who mercilessly beat a colt after the dry cinch strap ripped, with rider still in the saddle on the ground. The rider didn't check his equipment. He didn't immediately realize the cause of the wreck. Both horse and rider were immediately bewildered. The rider's knee jerk reaction was to whup the horse out of anger. I had an egg broken b.c. I didn't prepare. I had just gotten the divorce order and was emotionally distracted. As a result, I didn't do my mental checklist, plus my stirrups were too long when she sidestepped. I broke a transverse process and my metal sunglasses put a gash in my scalp causing profuse bleeding. Fried chicken...?

Great topic! I do have a question! If you are injured and can't get back on for about 6 weeks, what do you do with the horse or just do ground work when you can walk again and work on it? I had a horse roll on me that went down on the trail and my knee was pretty messed up for awhile. I couldn't get back on for 6 weeks. Advice on how to manage that scenario! Thanks!
