Are you afraid of snakes? Very few people would call an encounter with a snake pleasant even if it’s just a harmless grass snake. Unexpectedly coming face-to-face with a snake can be a scary experience. There are some specific signs that can help you to distinguish whether the snake is venomous or not. There are so many species of snakes in the world that there can be certain exceptions. Nevertheless, these are some general differences that you should be aware of.
TIMESTAMPS:
Look at its head 1:19
Pay attention to its pupils 1:43
Examine the space between its eyes 2:26
Note its color and behavior 2:51
Observe its tail 3:22
Beware of the way it swims 3:50
Snake-proof your property 4:43
Pay attention to trees and bushes 5:10
Choose the right shoes 5:39
Turn off the lights 6:03
Never follow a snake 6:28
What to do in case you’ve been bitten 7:00
Music by Epidemic Sound www.epidemicsound.com/
SUMMARY:
- One of the most obvious signs of a poisonous snake is its triangular head. Although not all venomous snakes have it, their necks are usually distinctly skinnier than their heads.
- Most venomous snakes have elliptical and vertical pupils, while non-venomous snakes have round ones. But non-venomous snakes can easily change the shape of their pupils in dangerous situations to look more powerful and frightening to their opponent.
- Venomous snakes have a little advantage over their non-venomous peers when it comes to hunting. They’ve got a heat-sensitive pit that helps them locate their prey through infrared radiation.
- Poisonous snakes are often more vibrant, both in their coloring and behavior. If you see a beautiful bright-colored snake, chances are that it is, in fact, venomous.
- You can always recognize a venomous snake by a visible line separating 2 rows of scales at the end of its tail. If you see a single row, you can sigh with relief: this snake is not venomous.
- Some reptile experts say that a lot of the time, venomous snakes can be recognized while swimming. They prefer to keep their entire bodies visible above the water as opposed to non-venomous snakes that swim with their bodies under the water.
- Whether you live in the country or you’ve got a summer cottage, the best way to keep snakes at bay is to get rid of their favorite hiding places: tall grass and fallen branches.
- Always wear closed-toed shoes whenever you decide to take a walk in the country or the woods.
- If you enjoy camping, here's a little trick for you to avoid snakes. Cover up all sources of light as you go to sleep, and never forget to shake your clothes out in the morning.
- There are a lot of cases when people are bitten simply because of their curiosity. They only do it if they feel threatened, and stalking them will definitely provoke this reaction.
- The first thing you must do is to call an ambulance. Once that’s done, try to figure out if it was a venomous snake that bit you.
- As the ambulance is on its way, it’s crucial that you try to stay calm and don’t move.
- As for the popular method of sucking the venom out of the wound, it may not be such a good idea after all. The person trying to suck the venom out, whether it’s you or someone else, risks cross-contamination through the mouth.

For the pupil tip,the pupils don’t determine if it’s venomous or not,it only determines when snakes are active.Vertical slits mean it’s nocturnal while circular means it’s diurnal

Me when I see a snake: hmmm, this is a rubber boa! Let's cuddle it! I am a snake enthusiast so I have a pet snake and I snuggle any snake I find, as long as it is non-venomous. I know the snake species where I live very well so I know if it's a rubber boa or a bull snake. I can also tell a bull snake from a rattlesnake without looking at the tail by the shape of the head.

Bright side: What would YOU do if you see a snake? Me: Fall in love with it, pick it up, set up an enclosure for it, and keep it as a pet. Honestly, I don’t get why snakes are so scary! They don’t have arms or legs, and the only way they would defend themselves is by biting! Just like a cat would scratch.

If you encounter a snake bite, first hold your wound under a running water and then call an ambulance. But do not try to tie a cloth above the wound cause it might block the venom but it will definitely stop your blood circulation and that makes it more worse

Good lord all the things I could say. A few though: Pythons (nonvenomous) have heat pits and elliptical pupils so ignore all of that. Many venomous snakes like cobras and some vipers don’t have heat pits either. And cobras (elapids) have round pupils. Poisonous and venomous aren’t the same thing, stop using them interchangeably. Snakes don’t attack, they defend themselves. Leave them alone and they’ll leave you alone. They’re not vicious creatures, they just want solitude. Also just a side note, the voice put on for this video is more toxic than any snake. Good lord...

never run away from a snake. Black mambas are much faster than people and are very aggressive. Rattlesnakes strike faster than you could put your foot on the ground. And if you find a snake resting other snakes might be around too so running might take you to another snake which would be threatened by you and because you are running it would be too late to stop and you will get bitten. So dont run just walk away calmly and dont make any sudden movements

Learn from the experience ive been through : I got down from 1 - 1.5 meter high rock to the grown below, and looked back at it. There was a venomous middle-eastern viper in front of me, lurking inside that same rock. I could see his whole body but not its head. It was 1-2 feet away from me in eye-level so i was frozen. Luckily nothing happened and it didnt bite me straight in the face. Probably didnt notice me untill i quickly grabbed my feet and jumped out. U can never be ready - so at least try your best and dont feel too lucky. In nature - always look where youre gonna step, at least a 1-2 meter radius around you. Stay safe yall 💙

There are so many exceptions to the "rules" they gave. Thankfully they mentioned that you shouldn't rely on these, but people tend to ignore this advice, see a snake with a large head and assume it's venomous or a snake with round pupils and assume it's nonvenomous. Both are wildly inaccurate means of identifying. As a hobbyist herpetologist, we always advise to keep your distance from snakes, and leave identifying snakes to knowledgable hobbyists and professionals. There aren't any surefire or easy ways to identify snakes. If you leave them alone, you're so much safer than if you were to harass them and try to ID them. Snakes are defensive, not aggressive animals, and will NOT chase you or bite you if you don't threaten them, so watch your step and leave them alone. If you want to move a snake, find a relocator or spray it with a garden hose. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have or direct you to credible resources.
