What is the best way to handle strawberry runners? Do you leave them on permanently, wait till spring, or cut them off? I will show you what I do, but the choice is yours.

Last year I cut the bottom off solo cups to make a little collar for my strawberry plants so they’re not drooping down for the slugs to eat and they took off like crazy. I have a huge Rubbermaid tote full of runners I need to get in the ground elsewhere now. It was super easy to see which were the original plants too because they had red solo cup collars lol.

Perfect timing Luke!! My first time planting edibles and my strawberries have runners with little roots, so the way you do it for you makes sense for me. I'll be cutting mine off and putting them into another area. I know some people think you take a while to explain, but I for one appreciate it since I'm just starting out and I have a lot to learn. Thank you young man, Peace to you and yours!

I root my runners in cups of compost then clip them off after they get rooted solid. And then transplant. From 6 plants I got about 100 daughter plants! Sold some, planted some, gave some away, threw the weak ones in the compost bin and I still have a lot left over.

If short on plants/runners, or to simply increase success rate, allow the runner to root before clipping it. One can place a small pot of soil under each runner and allow the runner to root in the pot before clipping it off the mother plant.

I root runners into bio-degradable peat pots for thirty days. Then sever them from the mother plant and plant them where I want them. With this method there’s no root disturbance and the pot decomposes away over winter.

Lots of methods for sure. I catch the runners thru the season in pots with soil, cut off from the mother plant when roots are good, and then plant the potted runner a bit later in a better spot in the patch. Good survival if properly watered. My patch started out 3 years ago and it produced until the frost this year. Best fruit ever.

I have a rotation system with 3 beds (Junebearing). I trim off all the runners in bed 1 until after harvest time, then allow enough runners to root into pots to plant a 2nd bed. The next year I trim all of the runners in the 1st bed all season, and repeat the rooting process in the 2nd bed. creating a 3rd bed. In the 3rd year I trim all runners, and after harvest remove the plants from the first bed and renew the bed for a different crop next year. (I really should put in a cover crop at this point. Gotta try that). This works well if you want a lot of berries and you have room. Thank you for all the work you've put into these videos over the years.

you can also uproot the runners and put them into small potting containers, do not snip the runner from the mother plant, let it establish in the potting container, then prune it off... that way, the survivability of the runner is increased...rather then just transplanting it...

Amazing! I started strawberry plants from pelleted seeds last year. Now I have all these babies, tiny leaves, in the planter I segregated them into. Now what? Do I separate them so they have room to get bigger in a permanent bed? That's what I'm thinking I will do, in a new "no dig mound". If you are looking back, I hope you can answer this question. I've been so frustrated with getting strawberries established as part of my retirement plan to grow food. Also What is the benefit of azomte? It seems there just isn't enough in a bag to make a difference in my 28 by 8 foot "no dig" mounded rows. I keep hauling up composted leaves in buckets so I assume azomite is like a bag of heavy minerals. Let me know what you might suggests. It's quite the uphill haul to get product to the plot. Thank you
