Adjusting to newborn sleep patterns can be one of the hardest things for new parents. Baby may seem like they have no problem sleeping during the day, but wake up frequently at night, or they may seem like they have no schedule at all. So, what can you expect from baby’s sleep schedule?
Baby has no concept of time in their early months. In the first 3 months, baby usually wakes up every 2-3 hours for feedings, but this can vary. You may be wondering when will baby sleep through the night? Some babies develop sleep patterns as early as 3 months old, while others it may be 6 months or closer to a year. Around the 4-6 month age, baby begins to learn how to self-soothe, which means if they wake up and aren’t hungry, they can calm themselves back to sleep without needing your help.
If baby is having trouble with their sleep, a few things to try are:
• Checking their swaddle or sleep sack
• Keeping them active
• Creating a bedtime routine
• Sticking to a schedule as best you can
