In this video Leah provides insight into what veterans can expect during a VA Compensation and Pension (C&P) exam for PTSD. Leah emphasizes the importance of being honest and prepared for the exam, which includes filling out a Disability Benefit Questionnaire (DBQ). She explains that the exam, typically conducted by psychologists or psychiatrists, may involve an emotional recounting of experiences related to PTSD. The DBQ covers various aspects, including diagnostic criteria for PTSD, symptoms, and the impact on social and occupational functioning. Leah advises veterans to be forthcoming about their mental health history, substance abuse, and legal issues, as these factors play a crucial role in the evaluation. Additionally, she touches on the possibility of telehealth exams and the significance of distinguishing symptoms attributable to PTSD from other conditions like TBI.

So I'm pretty sure I claimed PTSD but it's not showing on my initial claim. That being said another examiner thought it necessary to recommend to the VA that I see a psychologist for a c&p has that happened to anyone else?

I had my PTSD C&P exam last week through Optum Serve. It was quick and easy. The Dr had already read through my file and said she is ready to submit a claim for PTSD and wanted to know if I had anything else to talk about and didn't want me to relive the accident. I made notes and wanted to go on record to let her know that I suffer from anxiety, ED, depression, IBS, migraines and insomnia with sleep apnea. Thank you Leah for educating us on what to expect and to ensure that we are our our own best advocate and to take notes to explain your symptoms.

I would like to Thank you and your channel for the great information you provide in regards to the C&P exam. After almost 4 months of submitting my claim i had my Mental C&P exam. I served from 2003-2008 in the Navy and completed two tours in the gulf. Today I got diagnose with severe chronic PTSD. My Dr was very professional and took the time to listen and write all the notes down that she needed. All in all my exam took an hour. Everything she ask is exactly what it's covered in this video.

@prestigeveteran, thank you for this video. I literally just set up my appointment for Saturday. Going through the video was emotional and I am afraid the exam will be a little emotional. One thing I recognized is that I am functional with PTSD. I can go to work, take anxiety meds to off set my temper/abrasiveness when the anxiety is high due to working in a highly volatile environment (police & loss prevention in a huge warehouse with 4,000 people). At least to me, that is what I realize, cause when I go home, I do not socialize, my house is a “depression” house from the clutter and I don’t get out of bed often, during my time off. It’s one thing to be diagnosed, but another to get help and improve my life. Thank you again and I pray for others looking for help get it.

Leah,... Thank you so much for sharing the process about PTSD. Toward the later half about symptoms. I always was very private and close lip. Because I felt a sense of shame. And because some USMC Vietnam veteran challenged my PTSD experience. Stuff like, my concern is regarding the VA sharing this information to medical organizations. That may offer help. I was a mess during my PTSD exam and couldn't think straight, and I forgot to mention a few symptoms. I made the mistake of getting there early and forcing myself to remember every detail of my deployment and the trauma. I could barely open my mouth without breaking down. Just had PTSD C&P exam and it was ONLINE (like a zoom call) and it was outsourced from the VA to a company called "VES". The challenge with the VA is that they ask you to do X, you do it and then you're kept in the dar. For instance, the doctor filled out the DBQ, uploaded it in the portal and I had to fill out a FOIA request since none of the DBQ info was shared with me. Also, even though I did the FOIA request, the VA will not send that info to me for MULTIPLE MONTHS. Bottom line.... you fill out a lot of info, provide a lot of info but are kept in the dark by the VA the whole time........

That is a tough and personal decision. I'm a clinical social worker and a veteran and my spouse is a veteran with severe PTSD and some MST. I face the same dilemma of putting her through that or not. It probably could be weeks or a month or two of fall out realistically. For me I think the value of getting the disability at this point makes it worth it for us. I worry that if something were to happen to me she would have to go through it alone. We've been together 30 years and are just doing it now and being a social worker I feel like it should be doable, but no, this is hard. I've heard at the VA that MST is being recognized more now. It seems the disability workers / volunteers in our area anyway are eager to submit claims for that issue.

Had one today. Whole thing took 30 minutes. Strange random interview. Not comfortable talking about my Dad and I w/ a total stranger. He must have asked me 4x if I'd been treated for TBI? Gave him a nexus ltr from my treating psychiatrist w/ diagnosis PTSD MDD. He didn't go over a damn thing, just told me 4-6 weeks. Personally, I found the whole thing insulting and took an instant dislike to him.
