So what is wrong with Ubuntu? Everyone keeps saying they're not good anymore but I don't understand why.

Snap. Well, there is also Canonical making a lot of boneheaded moves, then retracting, then doubling down on the mistake, rinse, repeat _ad infinitum_ lately. But mostly because of that crap Snap.

Whatever is the most popular , easiest OS is the most hated by the Linux elitists
@RogerioPereiradaSilva77
@RogerioPereiradaSilva77 2 ай бұрын
@@PaulG.x Ubuntu is popular, I will give you that. But easiest? Only if Linux Mint, Zorin OS or Elementary OS disappeared from the face of the Earth today. Ubuntu has dropped the ball for a long time now; you must be thinking Ubuntu from 10 years ago. Plus Ubuntu gets some hate because not only it took the backseat after Canonical eventually figured out that there is no money to make with the desktop but also because Canonical keeps doing shitty moves one after the other, like the recent controversy with LXD, for instance.

@@PaulG.x Ubuntu is popular, I'll give you that. But easiest? Ubuntu has dropped the ball a long time ago more or less when Canonical figured out that there is no money to make on the desktop. These days there are much better novice distros such as Linux Mint, Zorin OS or Elementary OS. Want to make Ubuntu rise to the top again? You just have to convince Canonical to stop shoving snap down everyone's throats - better yet, drop it altogether - and adopt Flatpak and AppImage instead.

Ugh. Screen sharing is not remote desktop. It's a huge security risk leaving your local console unlocked while accessing it remotely. I wish the Ubuntu/GNOME devs understood this distinction and security vulnerability.

Exactly! Gnome 46 introduced Remote Login, which appears to not be present in Ubuntu, but is in Fedora and GnomeOS.

@@andrewvirtue5048No that doesn't count apparently. Nor does adding extensions to tailor the os to the user's needs. The unaltered OS must meet the commenters' preferences out of the box or else it is the WORST OS EVAH!!!! And you must be able to CUSTOMISE it or else it is the WORST OS EVAH!!!!

Can you still simply upgrade to this newer version from within the prior LTS version as we were able to do in the old Ubuntu "Unity" LTS versions ?
2 ай бұрын
Yes. The system will automatically let you upgrade as soon as it's ready. Usually after the first point release, but you can upgrade manually before if you want to

Canonical never stops working to keep Ubuntu at the forefront of safety, security, and reliability. As a result of CVE-2024-3094, Canonical made the decision to remove and rebuild all binary packages that had been built for Noble Numbat after the CVE-2024-3094 code was committed to xz-utils (February 26th), on newly provisioned build environments. This provides us with confidence that no binary in our builds could have been affected by this emerging threat. As a result of this, the Beta release for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) has been pushed to April 11, 2024 (previously April 4, 2024). We appreciate your understanding and thank the community members who are collaborating on our collective understanding of this emerging issue.

I'm moving to KDE 6 from Gnome. KDE 6 is really really good except for the window animation extensions.

and pretty much everything else, which is just a patchwork of frankenstein-style integration of components with excessive, redundant and confusing options and menus, all behind a outdated, unpolished and lackluster user interface that has absolutely no consistency or visual appeal, let alone standards and a endless stream of bugs and glitches from the most basic actions to the more involved ones. yea, KDE is really good. by Frankenstein's standards.
@RogerioPereiradaSilva77
@RogerioPereiradaSilva77 2 ай бұрын
@@mrb180 Well at least KDE works perfectly as a desktop environment and is very easy to tweak to one's liking whereas GNOME can't decide if it is a desktop environment or a mobile one, keeps waiting for that convergence that may or may not happen, bullies upstream and downstream FOSS projects around with little regards to anybody else and keeps removing useful features in the meantime just for good measure. As only a GNOME developer would say: a GNOME app ain't good until all the useful options have been removed from the UI and tucked into dconf or a random XML file! And the march to break extensions on a bi-weekly basis keeps on!!
@mrb180
@mrb180 2 ай бұрын
I used to think it looks like a mobile interface sometimes and there is a basis for that but personally I don't find anything that I miss in GNOME as long as I can use extensions. Some extensions should be default functionality, that is definitely true, because some basic desktop functionality is missing on a fresh install. But with the right extensions in, a new world opens - customizability and tweaking is comparable to KDE. There's so many things you can tweak, including panel and dash look and behaviour, shell theme, GTK theme, icons, you can even mess around with various window, workspace and desktop animations using Compiz effects. You got the ability to edit hidden settings using dconf or you can use JustPerfection or Dash to Panel which has a lot of options - even more than the KDE taskbar can offer. You also can add the cube extension to turn your workspaces into facets of a cube. Blur is possible as well via Blur my shell on a very granular level. You can easily make it into a full desktop with just two extensions, add dash to dock and system tray and you're done. Simple and effective to get the job done while maintaining visual consistency, pleasing aesthetics and most importantly, stability - it doesn't crash and has a great Wayland experience. Other desktop OS's dont have anywhere near the same level of customizability as either GNOME or KDE, so I'm sure it's sufficient for most users to be pleased. The pretty healthy application ecosystem on Flathub that complements and integrates well into GNOME by offering concise, easy to use functions, simple but pleasing interfaces with clear to see options and functions as well as respecting GNOME's user interface guideines definitely helps things for users. And there's a lot more of those apps than for KDE. As far as corporate politics and behaviour within the community, I can't comment. That being said, I do miss GNOME 2.x and KDE 1/2.x @@RogerioPereiradaSilva77

Noble Numbat was a buggy mess for me. Granted I run the daily build but after reinstalling it 3 times and it breaking when just doing some light tweaking I usually do , I give up on Ubuntu. 24.04 after trying it for 2 weeks. I would actually recommend LDME 6 and of course Fedora 39 has been the most stable and seamless distro I've used recently.

Nice review of 24.04 P.S. Nobel? Try Noble. Sure, ESL for you, and you seem to triumph in advertising that fact. But you lose credibility. You even start off the video with "22.04" wrong version number. I say this from a place of wanting to see you succeed. But the cuteness and attempts to endear yourself with your audience via fake and manufactured spoken and written errors is hindering you.
