Just when I think I've seen all of your older videos that pertain to my hunting style I discover one that I somehow managed to overlook....And this was one of those videos. Thanks for providing an excellent reference source for those of us who carry "hunting/fishing packs" but may have forgotten, or simply overlooked, some very useful, common sense, and perhaps even life saving items in those packs.

I think you did a fantastic job explaining to the young people that are first time hunters what they should take with them. I find it amazing after hunting for 40 years myself that you do exactly the same thing I do I thought I was the only one that put my snacks in Ziploc bags my thermos and socks and lo and behold you use the same deer drag I’ve been using for I don’t even know how many years I call it my good luck charm and I will not give it up I’ve replaced the rope on it three times so far. Great video and thank you from all of the first time hunters that are watching this

I have and use the same type of deer drag (11 bucks drug with it ) since the late 70's. Very cool to see your drag has the same wear and fade as mine ! That drag and my orange knit beanie that I wore when I killed my first Lebanon County,Pa. buck in 1974, are always with me. I also carry my Grandpa's old Western Auto hunting license holder from back in the early 50's. He introduced me to hunting at age 8 in Pa.. Just a traditional thing with me. I hunt both Lebanon County (home Co.) and Clearfield County, near Karthus .For years I hunted in Cameron County out of a tent with anywhere from 4 to 13 guys.

Great vid, I would only add that you should have some sort of fire starting materials with you just in case. I use the Dave Canterbury 5C's method and have it in my pack at all time. Of course if you are not deep in the woods, or are hunting with others that know where you are and when to expect you then it might not be necessary.

I also carry in my bag a small roll of the white tall kitchen garbage bags to do a ranger roll of clean dry clothe just in case of sudden dunking or water over boots or falling into shallow ponds or streams while crossing it helps a lot that way if need be you can change into dry cloths and dry out wet depths over a small fire or something if you have the time.

Wow, extremely helpful video. Thanks for the info. I am actually in China at the moment, but when I get back to Michigan I want to start hunting. After researching a little bit on the effects of the overpopulation of deer, I have decided it is the right thing to do. No one I know actually hunts, but my mother has experience with firearms, since she's Chinese, and Chinese people back then (and now) have to receive military training or something like that. I'm proud to have a mother who has used an AK-47 :D. Either way, still have much to learn about procedures and stuff, but I hope everything works out :). I suggest HEAD running gloves for a good pair of gloves. My mother bought me and my father each a pair one or two years back, and they're still in great condition. They give (have?) an amazing grip, are almost completely black, with the exception of the red HEAD logo and some removable tiny silver "stickers". The thumb and forefinger of both hands have touchscreen compatible material on them, so you don't need to worry about dropping a glove or anything like that. If you search "HEAD Digital Sport Running Gloves" on Google, you will see what I mean. DISCLAIMER: I was not paid to make that statement. I truly believe they are an excellent pair of gloves.

When it comes to snacks, I take what doesn't smell odd to deer. Such as dehydrated apples, sesame seeds, trail mix, etc. It all goes in ziplock bags for less noise, as you mentioned. My pack also has a hydration pack. I fill it with water. I like the duct tape idea.

Went hunting for the first time last year. I didn't get anything, but I appreciated the experience and look forward to going again next season. One thing I learned was your feet get COLD. Your story about how you got into it is the same thing with me. I'm fourteen years old and both my mom and my dad don't like hunting or even guns for that matter, the only way I am able to shoot or hunt is with my uncle, I don't know how or why I have liked this sport when my parents are so bias towards it but I am trying to get out with my uncle. I'm planning on heading heading up the mountain at about 9,500 feet tomorrow after deer, on the 5th day of my water only fast, whereas his pack seems to be all about food and energy. Generally good video. Missing some major items. Should always carry a small basic first aid kit in case of injury resulting in a bad cut etc. Some fire starter to go with the lighter - wood chips in wax with a string wick or a candle works. A head lamp for early morning walk in or dealing with a downed deer after dark is essential.

There are a lot of factors to look at. First does your State allow semi-auto rifles (PA does not). The second thing what is your budget? The 7.62x39 cartridge will get the job done, but the rifle weights in at 8lbs without a scope. So carrying it around all day, it will get heavy. The Ruger American is available for under $350 without a scope. Easy and safe bolt action., etc.

I bring sunglasses, compass, knives, flashlight and headlamp, extra gloves, watch or now a phone, extra battery pack phone charger and cable, reading material , toilet paper, rubber gloves, ski mask and baseball cap, snacks, water bottle , soft drink for afternoon and a coffee thermos in morning. Don't forget a license and twine to tag. Depending on the stand I'll bring rope with me for hoisting bow/bag/gun.

RIfle hunting in this State (CT) requires the wearing of "orange" (hat/Vest). I have a camouflaged backpack, but I'm nervous about the fact that it covers too much of the orange on my back, and I hunt on the ground (not in a blind). Wouldn't it make sense to wear a fanny pack style of carry all for hunting gear, to keep the orange on my back at maximum exposure from those jerks who might mistake me for a deer?

Never fished your hunt a day in my life but I want to start. As far as hunting goes is it better to start off with small game and work your way up. Any information would be highly appreciated. As well help me determine which rifle I purchase furs
