Paul should have been a politician ! He did NOT answer the question... the guy wanted to know what to LOOK for in a DAC ... meaning what would be a typical minimum specification... ... THEN go sus out a brand or model ...

I’d personally recommend a Schiit Modi 3 for $99. I bought one for my brother a bit ago to make hearing the detail within music easier for him to hear and transcribe the music, and it worked out great.

The writer asked, "What should I look for in a DAC to maximize the quality of the sound?" You did not answer the question. You told the writer what to look "AT", not what to look "FOR." What are the characteristics of what makes quality sound in a DAC? Within quality brands is a given. But what exactly is it that makes one DAC better than another?

I just last week picked up a used PS Audio digital link 3 DAC for about 300 USD. Very very happy with the sound.

I just bought the Cambridge Audio DacMagic 200M for $500. It’s an absolute steal and sounds amazing with full MQA decoding. Listening to TIDAL MQA Masters on my Focal Clears is stunning.

At the $300 price point I’m partial to the Musical Fidelity V90 DAC of which there are an ample supply of used ones on eBay. An excellent upgrade for it would be a $100 linear power supply. It has a a excellent midrange presentation that is probably more nuanced than most DACS in that price range.
