We've all been there. You want to paint, but you can't find anything to paint. Nothing seems worth wasting all that oil paint and canvas on. Everything is green, or there's no good lighting. Sometimes we just don't feel like painting. If you're anything like me, I've even gone out, walked around for a couple hours and then gone home because "there wasn't anything to paint." Well if you've ever been in this situation I hope this video helps. I've found that these issues often stem from a specific mindset looking at trying to find a subject to paint, rather than thinking of a composition to paint as Ian Roberts suggests in his book Mastering Composition. As I've found, looking for a composition and not worrying about "what" you're going to paint, it allows you to take control of the situation instead of being a bystander to the whims of lighting, weather or local conditions. It also frees us up to focus more on our skills and to practice and see beauty wherever we are.
