I recommend Spier and Mackay for someones first suit. They achieve that sub 330 dollar price point but have the fundamental qualities of more expensive suits like 100% wool fabric, bemberg lining, horn buttons, horsehair construction etc. I find that with a bit of tailoring they polish up really well and rival most of my MTM and even some bespoke suits. Please make sure your first suit doesn't have a polyester lining no matter how cheap it is! They don't breathe, heat up and you end up stinking and sweaty: It will put you off suits indefinitely.

Noticed a flaw in your logic.. "You shouldn't buy a black JCPenny suit for $80, to wear it to 1 wedding and 1 funeral in 5 years because the cost per wear is too high." If someone only wears a suit twice in 5 years, they should only spend the minimum amount on the suit. If they buy a 1k suit, it's $500 per wear. If you rarely ever wear a suit, no reason to spend a lot of money on one.

That’s true. My assumption is that anyone taking the time to research great suits either wears them semi-regularly or understands the value of a high quality piece.

Easy rule of thumb would be to just take your annual income, and divide by 100, for how much you should spend on your suits. (obviously it's not perfectly linear - especially at the lower and higher ends - but close enough). If we exclude sales, and just go for all-year retail prices: under $300 = Mostly fused stuff, maybe 100% wool on the upper end. $300-$550 = Fused or half-canvased, better fabrics. Usually made in China, India, and similar . Some decent brands here, like Suitsupply , Spier & Mackay $550 - $1200 = Mostly half-canvas construction, maybe full on the upper range. Decent fabrics. Lots of overpriced stuff in this bracket, though. Designer brands tend to put their entry level stuff here, while more conservative "premium" brands price their bread and butter here. Usually made in China, India, Eastern-Europe, middle east, Mexico, some African countries. $1200 - $2000 = Mostly Full-canvass construction, nice fabrics, etc. Typically here you find brands like Corneliani, Canali, Caruso, Pal Zileri, Ermenegildo Zegna, and a myriad of similar Italian brands, British (Gieves & Hawkes, Chester Barrie, etc.), American (Brooks Brothers Golden Fleece, Paul Stuart, etc.). Usually made in Italy, Europe, North America. The premium you pay goes mostly towards fabrics, or MTM. The difference between a $1200 and $2000 Canali suit (for example) is mostly just fabrics. These suits will be a mix of hand and machine made. $2000 - $3500 = The upper-limit premium brands for most people. Mostly hand made products, with premium fabrics. Affordable bespoke, or regular MTM. Brands here are typically Isaia, Belvest, Battistoni, Castangia, and similar. Premium designer brand suits also end up here, which are basically suits from the previous bracket, with $500-$1000 slapped on the price tag for the name. Usually made in Italy, Northern America, England. $3500 to sky is the limit = Close to 100% hand-made products, in very nice fabrics. RTW, MTM, Bespoke. Kiton, Brioni, Attolini, Oxxford, Zegna Couture, Orazio Luciano, etc. and most of the bespoke brands Almost exclusively made in Italy, America, England. When you buy a fashion-forward designer brands, you tend to pay one bracket above of what you get (in terms of quality).

If it's your very first suit .....Then buy something sub 150$ from Hnm - Zara - JC P -Outlet Malls .....Because its not about wearing millions bucks on body it's about wearing the suit which is well tailored to ur body structure .And it doesn't matter you buy it from custom tailor or off the rack you will DEFINITELY make some mistakes in getting it tailored perfectly (If its your first time ).....So do your trial n error on these inexpensive pieces but once u master the fit ,go for high end one .

I used to work for Saks off 5th in college and at the time their house label was around $399 with a half canvas construction, made in Italy of Zegna cloth. I wear a suit about 4x a week (on a 2 week rotation) and they have held up very very well. I don't know if the quality is still the same but I can definitely vouch for their older models. It is very tricky for a non-expert to decipher which of their house brand suits are great or terrible. They have private label suiting at $199, $399 and then Saks full-line has some fully canvassed, samuelsohn suiting at $1000 to $1600 - the thing is, the labels across all 3 price points look similar. But in general I have nothing but great things to say about the $399 price point suits as well as my Samuelsohn suit. I later worked for full-line as the Saks Brand Ambassador and would get a $2k allowance per season to refresh my wardrobe which was a great perk and had allowed me to accumulate a couple really beautiful suits.

Another thing you have to consider is if you are able to maintain your body shape. I mean if you loose or gain weight at the belly area you can always adjust the suit to a certain extant. However, if you have just started working out it doesn't make any sense to buy an expensive suit, because chances are that you will need two sizes bigger at the shoulders after a few years, which cannot be adjusted.

I would say have a budget of around $600. That will get you into most made to measure brands and allows you to pick what you like in a decent fabric like super 110s (good for everyday wear and easier to maintain than more luxurious ones). That’s what I plan on spending at least but if you can’t afford much get a off the rack and have it tailored. Make sure it fits decent of the rack so trailering isn’t that expensive. I’m a smaller guy so off the rack wasn’t the best option. Also I would recommend that you atleast go bespoke once in your life

It will be ready next Tuesday. I also purchased a light blue check traveller dress shirt. It looks killer with my new suit. I prefer the wrinkle free dress shirts. I'd like to recommend buying second hand from ebay for your second suit, at least if you know what you're doing. You can easily get something that used to cost like 2 grand for full canvas for around 200 dollars. Just make sure you really know what you're looking for in style and measure your suit currenct suit, know your size and how to adjust for stuff like an unpadded shoulder. My favourite suit is a charcoal, lightly textured caruso I bought which the previous owner claimed to have used twice. Looked brand new and looked modern enough to have been made... yesterday. 230 bucks is what I paid.

@petterniklasson2547
@petterniklasson2547 5 жыл бұрын
Well the quick and dirty answer would be: styleforum. Just google *brand* site:styleforum.net and try to find information about different labels, from which year they are (the design changes wuite often on many brands), and which line within the brand they belong to. Make sure not to fall for the bait-lines from otherwise great brands, for example: Don't buy stuff from "Z Zegna", "CC Corneliani", "Corneliani Trend", "Canali Proposta", anything by "Hugo" (Boss or whatever) or any non purple label ralph lauren IMO. Overpriced stuff with a fancy label. And don't fall for stuff like "Fabric by Zegna", usually cheaper less impressive brands with alright fabric ala Hugo boss. When it comes to fabrics you usually get good close up pictures from the fabric, if not just contact the buyer. If it's from a really high quality clothing line like "Zegna couture", Any "Belvest", "Oxxford", "Pal Zileri Sartoriale" or "Caruso" line (with many others) you can usually just count on the fabric being good, just make sure you like the texture and pattern. Maybe be a bit extra careful if the label says something weird like "waterproof wool" or something. (Although the Canali I did buy with waterproof wool was really good, but these can be a bit of a gamble). You should probably have some basic knowledge as well, some ideas of what a silk wool blend feels like or an idea of how linen often is somewhat stiff and wrinkly. Other small pieces of advice: I like to stay clear from anything that's even slightly older and non-Italian, especially British. They are much more likely to have armholes way too low, Italian stuff is usually way higher (With the exception of 25 +(ish) year old Canali and Zegna suits, those usued to have lower armholes). Make sure the seller isn't being a dud and buttoning two buttons on a 2.5 button suit, they are quite common still today in Italian high end suits and they still look very modern but not when they are buttoned incorrectly. So sometimes just look for an extra two seconds and because it may be a 2.5 button worth buying rather than an outdated looking 3 button. Eh.. I have a bit more but this is the most important stuff I can remember right now. Oh and don't be afraid of buying from eastern European countries, like the baltics, they often buy used clothing in bulk from second hand shops in western Europe and then sell the best stuff on Ebay. Some of my best finds have been clothes custom made in Stockholm (Hans Allde's shop) handed over to second hand, shipped to the Baltics and then bought back to Sweden by me... What a journey.

Very informative video. I have neglected my professional attire somewhat the last few years and I am looking to restock my wardrobe. I have a couple of points. RE: your cost per wear argument is a little thin. You give and example of the person who buys a $3,000 suit and wears it 3 times per week. No way is that banker who can afford a $3000 suiit wearing it 3 times per week. More likely, he is wearing it once a week, and owns a closet full of bespoke, or he owns the one and a bunch of cheaper suits he wears for every day. Either way, his cost per wear is way more than the cost per wear for, say, the $500 suit he wears once a week for 5 years. Where cost per wear makes sense is, perhaps, the higher end off the rack or entry level made to measure vs. the cheap entry level that will fall apart if it is worn every week for a year. Where as the slightly more expensive item will still look pretty decent after 2 or 3 years of hard wear, and it only costs a couple of hundred more than the entry level. That said, entry level has a place. Maybe you are the sort of person who only wears a suit once or twice a year. So you buy a suit you might only wear 10 or 15 times ever. It makes no sense to spend $700 or $800 unless you are really wealthy because in that case, your cost per wear is $50 to $80 per wear. Finally, there is one other factor to consider. Some of us are constantly changing weight. And there is no worse feeling than to buy a wardrobe of expensive suits only to have them sit in a closet because you gained 25 or 30 lbs.

I got a Suit Supply Lazio Blue Plain S110s for 399.99. Wore it about 7 times. Got a lot of compliments because it fit well and was well tailored. What would you buy in the 400-500 bracket? The one problem I have with the cheaper suit supply suits is that you can't get seperates. Also they don't sell the Lazio 110s for 399 currently. A similar Lazio Blue Plain with S110s is 569 or S120s 499. Whats your current suggestion for someone that wants quality construction first. I don't care where it's made just that the materials are of good quality and decent stitching. I checked out Brooks Brothers red fleece line and first the service was poor at the Madison Avenue location compared to Suit Supply but the quality seemed lower to my untrained eye.

Second. Also regarding vintage, love to see a collaboration. I disagree slightly a suit lasting only 10 years. If it is classic lapel width and gorge, solid charcoal, Navy, or brown even, it is timeless. I have a DB from the late '40s and most wouldn't even know. Gotten a lot of complements. However, do agree ten years is a great timeframe for calculating cost per wear and if worn less than a few times no more than $50 (which is a good price for used, have paid as little as $4 for made in Italy). Is 10 years also for regularly worn cloths? I get upset if don't last at least that long, though no one said what is normal. Thank you.

Unless you are going bespoke, you should never look at a suit as an investment. And you should definitely never consider it an investment if you’re spending less than $1,000 on it. $500 is not enough. I realize that some people might think that $1,000 is a lot of money to spend on a single garment, but it really isn’t. In fact, nowadays, $1,000 will barely buy you a decent suit. You should always spend as much money as you can on a suit, even if it’s your first one. You will hear a lot of people tell you that there’s no need to spend a ridiculous amount of money on a suit or that a tailor can make even a cheap suit look expensive. This couldn’t be further away from the truth. No matter which tailor you go to, no matter what you do to it, a cheap suit will always fit, look, and feel like a cheap suit. The fabric will always be subpar, the shoulder will never be quite right, the armhole will always be too low, the chest and waist will never fit the way they should, the sleeves will always be too wide, and the lapels will always look sad and lifeless. Now, you don’t have to go into massive debt to buy a suit. But if you can’t afford to spend $4,000+ at once, using your credit card won’t hurt. Or save up for it, that’s up to you. But I can tell you that, the more money you spend on a suit, the better it will feel and the better it will look.

@Lucius Tatus Man if you can't buy a mansion, dont bother buying a house. It will never compare! The rooms will be small and cramped, the pool will be unheated and too short for proper 50m freestyle sprints. And you'll have to say you have a garden rather than grounds! Just save up, £1,000,000 isn't enough.

You're not taking into account that certain fits seem to be going out of style every year. Some might spend $3000 on a quality suit that they'll only wear to a few functions...then the fit could be out of style next year.
