@@logunder4597 yeah you can probably just walk into a gym or do some research on places near u and find a good school. also most places offer free trial clases so you could also just go gym hoping til u find a school that you like!👍🏻oss

Finger tape and bandaids. Any good school will enforce nail hygiene but in the course of sparing you can still get nicked and don't want to bleed on the mats. Tape helps hold on the bandage and also helps protect any mat burn you get from getting worse.

Your first class I’d say don’t worry about a gi, wear shorts and a shirt, find out if you like it first. If you decide you’re into BJJ then go ahead and get a gi

Agreed. But if someone doesn't feel comfortable training without one - either because they quite aren't ready for skin-to-skin contact with strangers or just don't want to stand out and look so different from everyone else - ask if they have a loaner gi to try for your first class. That's how we get everyone started and it works well.

what about socks?I hate naked feet and would like to waer socks. but is it even good or will the people laugh if I come with socks?
@phoenixfitnessmartialarts2832
@phoenixfitnessmartialarts2832 Жыл бұрын
Great question! Socks can be very slippery on the mat and you'll want good footing as you train takedowns. There are some options if you aren't comfortable with bare feet or have medical issues preventing barefoot training. Some people wear wrestling shoes, and the kind of grippy socks they give you in the hospital might also work. Just ask the instructor what he/she allows and would recommend and they'll be happy to help. No one should laugh though. 🙂

@phoenixfitnessmartialarts2832
@phoenixfitnessmartialarts2832 Жыл бұрын
Good question, especially since head gear is often worn in wrestling and when it isn't people can get cauliflower ear. That CAN happen in BJJ but it's much less likely since there usually isn't the same kind of ear contact. Wrestlers use a lot of forearm clubbing to the side of the head and pushing their foreheads into the jaw/temple/ear of their opponent to set up a takedown, both of which can easily cause ear damage. Not as much of that in BJJ where there are gi grips to use (or people just sitting and pulling guard 😑). It can happen though, so if your ear ever gets banged and starts to swell a bit either take some time off or ask your coach if it's ok to wear wrestling headgear while it heals.

I wore groin cups a few times when I started and it made certain movements painful. I ended up ditching it and haven't worn one since. My 7 year old started doing it too and I'm torn between getting him a cup or not as I found it to be uncomfortable and painful when I was using one.

It's a personal choice and not an easy decision. I never wore one and ended up with damage to my epididymis (sperm tubes in the scrotum) which eventually required surgery. To be fair, I think that's rare and even after that I still don't train with one but I'm also done having kids so...🤷‍♀

Are any type of socks allowed? If worried about infections.
@phoenixfitnessmartialarts2832
@phoenixfitnessmartialarts2832 Жыл бұрын
Each school is different so be sure to ask the instructor. As for your worry about infections, ask about their history of skin infections like staph, ringworm etc. A good school should be cleaning and disinfecting their mats daily (or even multiple times a day if they have classes all day) to avoid this. We've been open for 8 years with ZERO incidents. 🙂 For additional protection, make sure you shower as soon as you can after each training session and NEVER walk around the gym bathroom with bare feet. That is far more likely to have germs than the mat. Bring a pair of sandles/flipflops/slides to wear whenever you go from the training floor to the locker room or bathroom. Thanks for commenting and best of luck with your training!

I go for BLUE BELT IN MMA this Wednesday. I'm 45 yrs old. I have the thick gi your talking about. I have Fuji GI pants and top. My test is Muay Thai kickboxing sparring. Jujitsu rolling plus demonstrating techniques for jujitsu submissions escapes takedowns sweeps etc. Plus demonstrate the Muay Thai CLINCHES ( 50/50 and PUMMELING ). Then I need to demonstrate the 32 Muay Thai kickboxing moves. Crocodile tail thrash. Spinning back kick. Roundhouse. 3. 7. Elbow blast knee blast uppercut blast. 9/11. 1.2.10. etc. I'm super nervous. Got alot to remember. I'm confident I'll pass.

@Bebo I've trained bjj in Brazil in my late teens for 3 yrs (20yrs ago). 2 months ago, after a 20 yrs hiatus I sign up to bjj gym here in NZ. Loving the tatami routine, but my body hurts more than in the past, even tho Ive been practicing other sport throughout my life. I got a mouthguard and some rash guards. Next step is buying a kneepad.. Like you said it'll help avoiding silly injuries.

The most frustrating thing about martial arts gear is in the sizing especially if you're a big strong guy because they're all made for slender Asian frames. I'm 6ft tall 300lb with a 50" waist and only a couple products fit me but none of them wrap properly except ones I had to tailor down in height. All they do is up size the entire product... they don't make it for bigger stronger people so if I get a gi that fits me I have to tailor it down from the seven-foot-tall cut they deliver to your door because the ridiculous manufacturers just assume the same frame at the same standard dimensions rather than keeping it of average height/length and just making it bigger to accommodate a larger more powerful individual. When I was 350lbs I only had two gis that would fit and they were hard to find and exorbitantly expensive for what they were...Fuji 10 and MACS 12 (these were the largest commercial Gis available but of course they were cut for people who were 10 ft tall so they are comically long!
