Being raised in Florida and then moving to NY in my 20s, I never knew how to layer. I moved up north with a sweatshirt being my warmest clothing. I learned quickly that I was not made for the cold, but still here 18 years later. Taking my first cold weather backpacking trip Halloween weekend and finally bought myself some wool base layers for the trip. This is an informative and fun video as usual Miranda. Thanks!

💯 once you learn layering hiking in any condition is a breeze. Also carry micro spikes if you’ll be hiking in cold conditions and there a possibility of ice or fresh snow on the trail.

Best advice I ever received for colder weather hiking. You should feel cold when you start. Once you start moving, you will warm up.

Category 0: Desert! Wherein it's super hot, but weirdly you're covered from head to toe. I have always found it sorta weird that there's this "bucket curve" of skin coverage vs. temperature. Obviously when it's super cold you need all your skin covered, but also when it's Super Hot you also want all your skin covered. Besides skin cancer, the external heating from the sun/desert will actually be more than what your body is producing, so it makes sense to cover up and reflect as much of that away as possible. I guess maybe in the middle of the bucket curve (i.e. moderate temperatures) our bodies are good enough at heat management to just let them do their thing. But at the edges of the curve (super hot/super cold) our bodies can't cope, so we have to take over with technology and just cover everything. Pretty exciting though that in the near future we might start to see some high tech desert gear using passive radiative cooling paints. In other applications they can passively cool a surface exposed to direct sunlight by up to 10 degC below the ambient air temp, which seems like a pretty good fit for desert gear to me. Just thinking out loud, but I think if the inner surface was black, and the outer surface had radiative paint, then you would basically have a similar passive thermal control system as what's already used on some spacecraft to reject sunlight and dump waste heat (which is the same goal in the desert). Even better, someday we'll all get stillsuits from Dune. Then I can finally hang up my sun gloves and not have to pack/cache tons of water for desert trips.

A kayaker turned me on to SealSkinz gloves for winter. I bought a pair one size too large and layer them on top of my regular gloves to stay even warmer when my hands are stuck out in the open on hiking poles. As for socks, I've worn non-cushioned SmartWool quarter socks for years, layer them on top of knee-high liners when cold. Yep, looks pretty goofy, but I've never had a blister! lol The REI wool socks are also great, last just as long as SmartWool for me! I still need to try Darn Tough, but have had poor results with Farm to Feet.

Great advice, I took a marathon training class in Edmonton Alberta years ago..our first run was January 2nd and it was 40 below...we layered up and after 3 or 4 miles no one was cold and we ran 15 miles that day. Love your videos Miranda

Oh! Thanks to Miranda for clarifying some of the layering for me -- in an easy and informative way, too! I didn't know there was a difference between mid-layer and insulating layer, but that's why these videos exist!

Start your hike “comfortably cool” is what I was taught in my cold weather survival class in Alaska. So you don’t sweat. Also, mittens are always warmer so I always bring mittens because my hands tend to get very cold.

I love this big-picture overview. I grew camping and hiking a little, but I'm pretty new to a more technical approach to dressing for outdoor activity. Wearing stuff that's a little more capable is an empowering feeling.

I got a few Smartwool cami tanks and it's totally changed cool weather comfort during hikes for me, my cotton camis have been keeping me cold and sweaty for over a decade because I couldn't give them up under long sleeves. Thanks Miranda!

cotton is crucial for hotter-than-body temperature hiking though! you kind of mentioned that, but it's actually the preferred material for extreme heat vs. synthetic or wool

Basically, you're showing the seasonal fashion phases of Trader Joes, through all four seasons. Everything that you're wearing, you will find someone in the parking lot of any Trader Joes driving a Subaru, Rav4, 4Runner, or a Honda HR-V wearing the same thing.

I like cotton t-shirts in the heat. I do always take layers in case I have to change.

I'd like to see you check out Duluth Flex dry on the fly pants and shorts. I recently bought a pair of the shorts and pants this summer and introduced them into my hiking/fishing clothes and I think they're absolutely amazing for those applications. Would like to hear your opinion on them for hiking and backpacking. *EDIT* Also would be interesting to see Miranda do an urban/traveling van camping survival video in Vincent. Cause sometimes its a long drive to get where you're going to camp/hike and an alternative to hotels/motels is always preferable to me. You and Vincent Van Gogh have inspired me too, my next big purchase will be a van and having it gutted and custom outfitted for traveling/van camping. Going to name her Vanya Tucker in honor of Tanya Tucker.

There are different types of cotton wear. My base layer used to be cotton fit for under -30 degree Celsius. And cotton wear is one of the best for tropical and desert environment.

Living in Southern California, I don't miss the rain at all. Most of my outdoor clothes are from Columbia it prevent me from sunburn . I made a silly mistake 7 years ago by hiking the Great Wall of China in March with my wool coat, snow on the ground but I was getting too warm from my hike. I didn't do any research on hiking the Great Wall before my visit

There are also a couple very useful outdoor clothing options worth mentioning that aren't typically marketed to average hikers. That's honestly because they're difficult to explain to customers. One is 'string underwear' (not of the 'G' variety, silly!) They are a shirt and pants made of nylon netted material. I wear this over a merino wool base layer to allow more airflow, which greatly extends the insulating abilities of your mid layers by keeping them extra dry. It also works well without any mid layers in rainy conditions when worn between the base layer and hard shell layer, by lifting the outer shell away from skin to reduce conductive heat loss. Additionally it prevents condensation and/or sweat from accumulating inside of the shell. Sometimes I also wear a sports jersey type mesh t-shirt over the netted underwear instead of wool mid layers when a slight more warmth is needed. Both materials are very lightweight and compact to carry, but they're best worn while on the move. If I sit to rest a bit and start to feel a little too drafty, I cinch up the cuffs, waist, and collar of my outer layer to trap the warm air in until I'm up and moving again. I prefer sports trainer pants that are made of a thin layer of ripstop nylon and nylon mesh lining to wear underneath durable shell pants. I opt for these instead of traditional string underwear pants because they're more soft and comfortable and they also work a bit better at keeping the cold, wet outer shell pants off of direct contact with skin. I do always pack a merino wool mid layer or two as well, in case it starts getting too chilly; especially for relaxing around camp in evenings and early mornings. Finally, for extreme cold such as in icy winter conditions, thermal-reflective 'vapor barrier' shirt, socks, glove liners, and possibly pants can work miracles. They can be a lifesaver if you've fallen through ice and gotten drenched, or are otherwise just getting too cold. They work by trapping in humidity until the air next to your skin is too saturated to absorb any more vapor. Bear in mind, moisture 'wicking' materials only work on sweat and condensation, but have no effect on vaporized water that constantly emits from skin even when not sweating. A vapor barrier serves several vital body heat retaining functions. First, it prevents unnecessary loss of hydration by stopping water vapor from leaving through skin, and in doing so, holds in more heat energy that would have normally left the body through that constant evaporation. Secondly, in locking in that humidity, it keeps the vapor from getting into mid layers and/or loft layers where it would be cooled from the outside to form liquid condensation within those insulating layers. Such dampness (sometimes even ice) within the fabrics would have severely reduced their insulating properties. Hope these rare insights help you make well-informed decisions in putting together your personal outdoor clothing system. And if you've read this far, you can understand why REI and others don't think it would be feasible to market these products, given their staff would be thanklessly tasked with explaining how it works lol I'd link you to the excellent garments I personally use, but with respect to REI, I won't promote products here from other businesses. Wish you an awe-inspiring time making wonderful memories in the wilderness, and luck in figuring out the best gear to keep you safe and comfy along the way!

Beanies are always really tight on my head. I get compression headaches from tight head gear and wearing a beanie brings on an unbearable headache. Any beanie alternatives or not tight beanies? I’m curious if there’s solutions or other people who also get headaches with tight hats?

I hike in the northeast (VT, NH). I am always hesitant to wear shorts even if it’s hot outside as I worry about bugs and Lyme disease. Any good rule of thumbs I could use to decide when it is ok to wear shorts?
