I get questions from beginning acrylic painters about what type of acrylic paint works best. I categorize them by viscosity in this video. The type that works best for you depends on the way you paint.
Here is the blog post for this video:

Lots of very useful information here. I was also wondering if you could mix the different viscosity acrylic paints, and, what was used to make a heavy paint more fluid - like. TY for sharing your knowledge and information with us. BTW, love your channel and your artwork.

Very helpful my question what type of varnish do you use to protect your artwork

Sandra, I don’t use varnish at all. Acrylic paintings are lightfast and don’t require the application of varnish.

Hello David, I have heard it's not good to add water to Acrylics - at least not too much, anyway. I heard that it will eventually cause the paint to crackle, more or less prematurely. Is that so ? If it is safe to add some water while you're painting, is there a ratio you should follow to not get too much water in your paint. TY for any advice. I have a few more questions, though. Would you have any suggestions as to what I can do about a problem I'm having with my paintings. That problem is this: No matter how closely I follow anyone's directions on a painting, my works seem to end up looking cartoonish for some reason. Could that be caused by the brand paint I'm using ? The brand I'm using the most is a heavy body (at least very thick) Acrylic by the company called *Creative Inspirations.* Do you know whether that is a student or professional grade of paint ? I appreciate your taking time to answer my questions.

Yo can’t believe everything you hear because lots of people are ill informed. How much water you can add before the acrylic binder breaks down varies with brands and grades of paint. Most professional grade paints will allow 35-50% of water to be added, (and less for student grade paint) but Golden paints can accept 95% water before the binder is compromised. You have to check with the manufacturer you use to find out. Cartoonish looking paintings have nothing to do with the paint you are using - it has everything to do with your skill level. You have to be as objective as possible about what you create as a painter, which is difficult. Work hard to improve your skills and paint a lot. You have to paint hundreds of paintings to become a good painter.

@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 @David M. Kessler Fine Art Thank You So Much for responding. I am so glad to know how I haven't wasted my money on the many paints I have purchased. I will keep painting to hopefully get better at it. As you said, it is difficult to be objective about your own work. A painting I did which I found to not look so good, my sister loved it. Then, when she sent me a picture of it at one time, it looked much better to me. So, what you said about that is definitely true. Thank you again for your advice and help.

Good Morning David!! Maybe you have addressed this in a video I have not viewed yet or have viewed and can't remember but you mention here that your go to paint is Golden Heavy Body. When you paint do you use mostly opaque colors? I have had issues where I have used heavy body paint but then realized I wasn't getting the coverage I wanted only to find out that the color I chose was transparent or translucent. Using white to make it opaque changes the whole color theme and usually not an option.

Rob, the way I paint I don’t care if the paint is opaque or transparent - I use all of it the same way. I don’t paint in layers so it doesn’t matter to me. I use lots of paint and get great coverage on whatever surface I am using. Adding white only changes the value of the color, it doesn’t change the color itself and will not change any color combination you are working with. You have to use white paint to create values.

Thank you, David - again! Very helpful information. So far, I use Golden heavy body, but also have gotten some Amsterdam Expert Series paint. What is the difference between Golden’s Fluid Acrylics and Golden’s High-flow acrylics? Do they just add water?
@davidm.kesslerfineart1717
@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 2 жыл бұрын
Fluid and High Flo are indeed different. They don’t add water - the paint manufacturing process is more complicated than that. They add flow improvers to make it more ink like in consistency and can be used for airbrushing.
