What Vikings Actually Gets Right About History

History Channel’s historical fantasy drama "Vikings" is a hit series that has spanned six seasons and will spawn a sequel series on Netflix called "Vikings: Valhalla." It is highly entertaining, though it does take liberties with historical facts to progress its story forward. It is a historical fantasy series, after all, and shows like "Vikings" are not noted for getting history right. We have been accustomed to assuming that movies and television shows don't rely on historical facts to entertain their viewers, but bend them to create gripping scenes to keep us hooked. However, whether you believe it or not, there are historical facts on "Vikings" that the show actually gets right. It’s surprising but here’s what they are.

It’s interesting how the video about Vikings being wrong vastly got more views than this one talking about what it got right. People prefer negativity and getting to dunk on the show rather than acknowledge what was correct in the show and praising it for it.

VIKINGS has to be one of the greatest psuedo-accurate fictional series about how they influenced all of Europe into Russia especially the British and Irish Isles. The actors who played Ragnar, Bjorm Ironside, Rollo, Loki, Lagertha, and Ivar the Boneless breathed so much life into those roles. I even got so upset when Ivar the Boneless murdered The Seer and truly relished his ignominious death as his deformity did him in as if the Wrath Of God took him down during the final battle against King Alfred of Wessex. It was like watching the saga of GoT without dragons and other staples of fantasy but with true mysticism of the Norseman religion falling to the Christian faith of the Roman Catholic Church. I hope it earned many Emmy awards

I don’t think the point of the show is to be historically accurate. I love to see accuracy, but the show is really just to show us what some of the Vikings did in history. Ragnar and Rollo weren’t brothers in real life, but they’re made brothers in the show so that we can see both of their accomplishments alongside one another. Rollo was part of the founding of Normandy and Ragnar is probably most famous for attacking Paris and receiving one of the first Danegelds. They existed hundreds of years apart but the show has put them in the same time so we can see a full story

I can't even watch this show anymore because of how ridiculously inaccurate it is. While Ragnar & viking history is shrouded in mystery, the show is just so inaccurate it doesn't even come close to reality. It's inaccurate and inauthentic.. Here's a list of things that I hate about the show. -Rollo is Ragnar's brother (not even close in the Viking timeline) -Ragnar never initially raided England (and the danes knew about England far before the events of the show) -Aslaug is petty and weak instead of a fierce shield maiden.. Bjorn should also be her son. -Sigurd (who should have been king of Norway and Denmark) was killed by Ivar (which would have been an absolute no no in danish culture) -they mention the danes only 1 time in the show (all the main characters should be danes besides harold finehair (who's actually supposed to be the grandson of Sigurd) and his people. -the Vikings weren't all about the norse gods -kattegat is the name of the sea that splits Denmark, not a land-based place and it's in Denmark, not Norway or Sweden -ubbe was a general that led the great heathen army, not just an incompetent son of Ragnar -bjorn dies even though he's supposed to become the king of Sweden & head of the Munso dynasty.. -hvitserk (halfdan) is supposed to eventually become the leader of daneland/daneslaw areas which was a vast swath of territory in England far bigger than just east Anglia.. -Ivar should be leading raids and conquering land in western Scotland and Ireland being evil towards foreigners not his own people... -the Vikings meeting native Americans, become interested in Buddhism and traveling through the desert is very far-fetched. -the french are all jumbled up and misplaced name and time-wise.. I could go on and on with the inaccuracies but I don't get why they had to obliterate anything close to the actual legend. It was fine until the whole Ivar thing, I could deal with it, but now it's just a gross perversion of reality and I hate the show. -

If you wanted to watch something historically accurate as possible, you should probably watch something like documentaries instead of a drama. They don't claim the way they portrayed the characters/times to be 100% accurate, because there's no way for anyone alive today to know everything about how things were in the Viking ages.
@conquera9993
@conquera9993 2 жыл бұрын
@@pie6131 I didn't say it had to be as historically accurate as possible. The writer just took too many liberties knowingly absolutely shredding the history. The show was made by the history channel which is now a joke when it comes to history & millions of uneducated people now think "yeah that's how the Vikings were".. familicidal maniacs that approve of any murder sanctioned by a crippled lunatic. Would've been much better if they followed the existing lore/historical context. You don't think the show would've been more interesting if Sigurd ended up ruling "Kattegat" aka Denmark/Norway and Bjorn ruling Sweden with Ivar trying to conquer parts of Scotland, Ireland and Northern England? They went for a game of thrones type thing where it's all about murder betrayal and intrigue but that made the show dumb and nonsensical.. it's now game of thrones.. the whole Vinland native american thing at the end is really stupid and pointless too.. show is supposed to be 150 or so years before Vikings discovered it & they threw that in there because they screwed everything else up so bad they didn't know what to do with ubbe..

@conquera9993
@conquera9993 2 жыл бұрын
@@andreafranne I know it touches Sweden to the east but that land used to be Danish.. look at a map of Denmark around 850 AD. My point was why are you calling a city the future name of the body of water close by? Roskilde was known to have existed in that time and that's probably what they meant by Kattegat. The sea wasn't even called "Kattegat" until the late middle ages...

Charlemagne made a deal with pope, that he could colonise as long as hevforced christianity. He started slaughtered the saxons. Danish king Sigfred gave asylum to the saxon king Widukind. Widikund went. He had to surrender orvthey all would have been killed. A christian official sent a threatening letter to king Sigfred, that gas was onky an animal among animals. That he must allow missionariesmor he would be dragged before Charlemagne in fetters. The next danish king Gudfred sent the first fleet. Thatvwas directly at the franks. Later danush king Harald Bluetooth pressured the people to become christians. Later the same in Sweden and Norway. The reason was probably pragmatic. To away onecreason for invading. Germany later took the southern part ofbthecdanish peninsula and the russians took Karelia from Finland. Else we're still here.

😂I’m still waiting for the name of the first person account of the witness who observed the events in the Garden of Eden! This narrator mispronounces several names such as Leif (it’s pronounced ‘Layf’ not leaf!). Anthropologists have found that the people called Vikings travelled all over & that the Swedes didn’t just travel east, Norwegians west & Danes south, the 3 Groups travelled all over. Most ancient Scandinavians weren’t Vikings anymore than most Americans are CEOs. And there were female Viking warriors. Archeologists have found burials and they are displayed in many European museums.

Absolutely not true that women were fighting in battle, especially front line battle.. they would accompany the vikings on raids for logistical reasons and to provide support back at camp....so you're taking a great amount of license with the "evidence" from the graves.. the reasons behind those graves is in great dispute by historians but, it's believed that women of high status might have been buried with full honors because of their importance... but, the number of women shown in the series fighting in battle never happened.. the show is typical of Hollywood SJW liberty to make a political point...
