GenX has entered the chat! I actually saw the Freedom Train. It was a special field trip in elementary school. And yeah, I saw a pair of Judy Garland’s ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz as it went by. That’s the ONLY thing I remember. I was actually very disappointed at the time that there wasn’t anything of *real* interest. Having witnessed the Watergate hearings and suffering the fallout of my dad’s PTSD from whatever he did in Vietnam, all this patriotism was wasted on a free-thinking ten year old. The bicentennial quarters were pretty cool though. I still have some of those in my childhood jewelry box.

That collectible plate is really something. I can't conceive Disney creating an image of Mickey holding a firearm of any kind today. I got a chuckle from the Flintstones banner, with poor Barney having an arm the same color as his clothing. 😂

As a kid in the 80s we had Bicentennial wallpaper in our kitchen that was a holdover from the early 70s. If you look it up now that was a big decorating trend i guess, in the countdown to 76, even furniture upholstered with that theme.

My high school in Greeneville Tennessee was redoing the gym floor, took weeks of going back and forth with 12" sanders on handlebars. Since it was 1976, put a bicentennial theme in the middle of the floor and finished with multiple layers of clear. They were very protective of that floor and not long after finishing a huge windstorm blew a south facing wall in on the newly finished floor ruining it. Took a long time to rebuild the gym and when rebuilt the bicentennial theme was gone from the floor. Best laid plans of mice and men I guess

This was the year I graduated from high school. USGrant High in Oklahoma City . They built Stars And Stripes park in Oklahoma City. Bob Hope came to open the park and returned every 4th of July to put on a free show until shortly before he died. Remember The Great American Soup Company?

@@PointlessNostalgia I bought my ticket the night before the concert. For $10!. I was a a Church youth event. Someone I knew asked if I wanted the ticket. The concert was on a Sunday. This kid's parents wouldn't allow him to go because he would miss Church. I asked my Mom if I could go. She said if I could arrange a ride I could go. There was a big thing going on at the Town Common when we got back. I found a friend I knew was going. We looked for the guy giving him a ride. I had to give him some gas money but I had a ride. I was 8 that July 4th and remember all of the hoopla around the Bicentennial. There were a plethora of people who dressed up in Revolutionary War gear to celebrate. It seemed like the Bicentennial Logo was slapped on just about everything. I'm looking forward to the 250th celebration... if we are still a union of states.

It was a celebration to end all celebrations 🎇 🇺🇸 I remember Bicentennial Minutes which was a brief on this day reference to the Revolutionary War and the Declaration of Independence commercials that ran every day starting in 1975 . Fun time to be alive and American. I was a teenager and enjoyed the moments

I was 8 years old in 1976 and remember all the Bicentennial celebrations. It really seemed to be everywhere. I would think the 250th anniversary would deserve an even bigger celebration, but I don't think it will get one. I think the biggest reason is that the 250th anniversary doesn't have as catchy a name as "bicentennial." The 250th anniversary may be called the United States Semiquincentennial, or the Sestercentennial or Quarter Millennial. Those names just don't roll off the tongue the same way. But we'll see one way or the other in just over a year.

The planned Philadelphia celebration of the Bicentennial was a disaster, largely due to then-Mayor Frank Rizzo predicting that there would be so much chaos, they would HAVE to call out the National Guard to preserve order. Needless to say, very few people came.

Amazingly they did not have a special that year. They do have a few patriotic specials from later years. And there is a funny bicentennial plate with Snoopy sleeping on the liberty bell that I considered showing on this, but I figured I would definitely be doing a Liberty Bell video again sometime.

I think the dumbest thing that year was the last series of the Cadillac Eldorado Convertible up to that point being available in only red white or blue granted Red and White were the two original colors available on the convertible in 1953 Eldorado was one of Cadillac's longest running nameplate series 50 years 1952-2002 the top 5 are Fleetwood Eldorado Deville Seville and Escalade though by sales Deville Seville and Escalade are the three top selling nameplates in Cadillac history 6.35 million units 978,000 and 949,135 though Escalade will overtake Seville for 2nd place at the end of the year #4 is the CTS with 730,000 units and SRX is 5th with 505,000 units until its discontinuation in 2016 while the four rarest models in modern Cadillac history are the ELR 3,000 units XLR 15,500 Allante 21,430 and Catera with 95,000 units
