Lame excuse for war: In the 1300s, someone from the Italian city of Modena snuck into the rival city of Bologna and stole a bucket from the center of town. The leaders of Bologna sent an ultimatum, demanding the bucket be returned or there would be war. The leaders of Modena scoffed and sent back no reply. Bologna marched on Modena, hundreds were killed, but Modena won and they still have the bucket on display to this day.

@Rynewulf
@Rynewulf 4 жыл бұрын
It's even more nuts being than that, because the British traders were actually smugglers who weren't allowed by the British Empire to trade in their territory. So they used places in SE Asia as bases halfway between British India and China, where they would illegally buy the opium and then smuggle it into China. After which point the British Empire gave military protection to the traders they had declared to be criminals, but they weren't operating in the British Empire. Why, they were fair British businessmen abroad under the global watch of the crown!

My personal favorite is: *_The War of the Oaken Bucket_* fought in 1325 between the city-states of Bologna and Modena. Essentially, a bunch of Modenese soldiers slipped into Bologna, stole a _bucket_ and then refused to return it, sparking hostility. The subsequent war (consisting of _one_ battle) was won by the Modenese, who to this day supposedly still have the oaken bucket, strung from a rope in the Torre della Ghirlandina. _The fact that the bucket was filled with loot is an oft forgotten detail that makes the entire excuse seem somewhat less lame..._

The Assyrians built beautiful temples like Palmyra. Shame the city was nearly destroyed by ISIS
@justinpachi3707
@justinpachi3707 4 жыл бұрын
Palmyra wasn’t a temple. It was a city. The current ruins was that of the Roman city. It grew wealthy during the Third Century AD. It’s position was on the crisscross of the trade routes of East and West. As Shapur I invaded the East as Rome was in anarchy, Odenathus a Palmyrene Noble loyal to Rome flight him off and laid the siege to the Persian capital. Then his widow declared the Palymerine Empire with her as regent for her son. Aurelian has none of that and crushed it and by sheer force of will put back Rome together. He then had all trade re-routed away from the city and let his men sack it. That’s why the city became depopulated and eventually became a ruin. It was well preserved thanks to the arid climate of the Middle East. Unfortunately Isis destroyed lots of it.

Lame Casus Belli: Two trading post, Portuguese and French, in Brazil during the early exploration of the area. Put in different sides of a river. The two didn't like each other, one of the Portuguese had a parrot, whom he though to talk, mostly bad things about the Francs. One day the parrot went to the French post, the commander hear, thought it was a Portuguese being unfriendly, gather his man and attack. It later result in the local conflict which destroy the French position on South America for centuries. All that because of a parrot saying sh*t.
