What do you get when you mix French culture with a Viking drive for war? The Normans of course! Under their leader, William soon-to-be the Conqueror, the Normans conquered England from the Anglo-Saxon Harold Godwinson after his defeat at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, forever changing the course of English history.

*I'll be the first to admit that the maps of pre-Norman England in this video aren't all that great. They weren't the primary subject matter so they didn't get as much attention as they should have. That being said, they are still roughly accurate, but for much better versions check out this video on Alfred the Great: • Who Was Alfred the Great?

@@LookBackHistory I keep coming back because i love History, and i quite like this channel in particular. Just a suggestion. Perhaps at 200 subs you could do a Q&A? Edit: 200 subs

:) I mean, I'm at 176 rn so I might just have missed that particular window... xD Honestly, I like Q&A's generally but I think I'm just a little bit small to do one effectively right now. Not quite enough people to get a solid number of questions. I don't want to be that guy who's like "Ask me anything!" and then gets 2 questions. Rest assured, a Q&A will happen at some point though!

I got a question. What was in normandy before Rollo and the normans settled there? What was it called and who governed it?
@Literarylane1
@Literarylane1 7 ай бұрын
Before Rollo and the Normans settled in the region of Normandy, it was primarily inhabited by a mix of Frankish and Breton populations. The area was known as "Neustria," which was a division of the larger Frankish Kingdom. Neustria encompassed the western part of the Frankish realm, including present-day Normandy, Brittany, and parts of neighboring regions. Neustria had been governed by Frankish kings and later by Carolingian rulers. However, during the 9th and 10th centuries, the region faced political instability and Viking incursions. The Vikings, including Rollo and his followers, conducted raids along the coasts of Neustria and eventually established a significant presence. In 911 AD, a treaty known as the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte was signed between Rollo and King Charles III of West Francia (the Carolingian ruler). According to this treaty, Rollo and his Norsemen received a large territory in exchange for their loyalty and protection against further Viking invasions. This territory became known as "Normandy" or "Land of the Northmen" (derived from "Norsemen"). Rollo, who became the first ruler of Normandy, adopted Christianity and pledged his allegiance to the Frankish king. Over time, the Norse settlers gradually assimilated into the local Frankish and Gallo-Roman culture, forming a unique blend of Norse and French elements that would become the Norman culture. So, before Rollo and the Normans settled in the region, it was part of the Carolingian Kingdom of West Francia and had a mixed population of Franks and Bretons.
