Dyson made the CR01 and CR02 washing machine around the turn of the last millennium.

The corrosion at the ends of the legs could perhaps be explained by water being retained long after the wash in the gap between the inner and the outer drum, which would wick by capillary action where the ends of the spider's legs touch the drum, causing galvanic corrosion. There's so much plastic wedged between the drums, that I'd assumed someone had actually poked it all in from the rear to make the inner drum turn with the outer because it was broken and wasn't turning. Actually, I suppose if it was deliberately wedged in there by the owner, it would be done from the front, or through the holes, or the joint in the middle

I got to see the original wooden prototype for this machine and it had two physically separate drums side by side so I had always assumed that was how the end product was built but clearly not. I know they do a load of testing on products but they clearly didn't catch the issue with debris getting trapped in the holes and the corrosion expansion would never have appeared in the testing lifespan.

Built by a manufacturer who didn’t have a clue about washing machines, caustic water and poor seals. It is a lot of mechanical movement in a washer that wasn’t made for it😊

Wow that is a true mess!!! :O :O would be interesting to see it working again, but damn that drum is totally expanded and full of crap! - i remember the eco bubble samsungs first gen drums were like this with brittle spiders

The only washer that I know that are not coin laundry washer that don’t have corrosion issues are asko washers where they have stainless steel spiders it’s so strong that a KZfaqr Aussie 50 used it as a fire spinner

Owen, perhaps a good idea poorly designed and applied, but is such complexity required? I think not, cheers

Again, Dyson tries to reinvent the wheel. Where most people just need a Wheel that works. In essence a useful concept to explore, in reality an over priced unnecessary sales gimmick made with inferior material. Andy, I admire ingenuity, but a spider that reacts and disolves in sodium carbonate in such a high priced or any machine is just unacceptable ? Such a metallurgical issue should be caught by R&D ?

Maybe they did catch it Tommy? And decided that 7 years was enough. This machine is 20 so it is a reasonable lifetime. I know I would prefer stuff to last indefinitely but reality prevails. We get to understand what lasts by observation and can benefit from our willingness to reuse and repair. But others want something new and will accept the risk. I like the look of the new Ebac machines. But after the 7 year warranty who’s to say what will happen.

All stainless in the drum spider and a bit more inter drum space might have saved the day.

Might be able to undo the bolts for the spider, remove it and try and file down all that corrosion and then bash the drum back in shape
@bootsowen
@bootsowen Жыл бұрын
I tried an impact driver on the bolts and they wouldn't budge, instead I pulverised the dust with a hammer through the drum and reshaped it! Works again now!

If you know anything about Samsungs QDrive technology, it’s almost the exact same thing as the contra rotation technology, just the fact that the contra rotation uses spider arms and QDrive doesn’t. But I feel like if Samsung can make a washing machine almost identical to Dysons that works just fine, then making a contra rotation system shouldn’t be too difficult.

You should try to get a drum from other brand but with the same size as this one. Will not have contrarotator anymore but it will work. Other solution is to modify a drum support from other brand

I'm wondering if there was indeed some sort of metal alloy contamination in production of the stainless steel drum that caused galvanic reaction ..maybe some sort of copper/brass impurities??

Alkaline chemicals (detergents?) + Aluminium alloy giving the usual lively reaction? I thought that stainless steel was commoner for washing machines for obvious reasons.

I've got a great idea! Let's design a fancy washing machine that's mechanically complex, which rotates in two different directions at once! It's bound to be great performing and more reliable than simpler machines! My old Candy died recently of suspected spider failure, after 19 years of rotating in ONE DIRECTION at a time!
@TheBlackEventorizon

The machine did do a better job of washing clothes, resulting in shorter cycle times and less water used compared to even modern machines, but as we can see here it had design flaws that didn't appear during testing but killed the design in the real world.
