Too bad the text on screen has what I think is AI written text. There’s been a fair amount of mistakes that have messed with me a bit since I have an auditory processing disorder and sometimes really do rely on subtitles. Luckily, this guy’s audio and voice is a lot clearer than some.

I know of 2 people who have fired immediately for pointing out the illegality of the restaurant making them pay for an ordering mistake. One of them went to the state and labor board and filed a complaint. She was awarded a $50,000 settlement and the company went bankrupt when they had to go back and reimburse the money taken out of workers paychecks. Plus the 1.3 million dollars in fines for the repeated violation of the state labor laws over a ten year period.

Childrens camp I worked for fired me. They didn't like that I had two board members removed after they put several campers in immediate danger with their negligence multiple times, that I was pushing back against the church focus direction they wanted to go in (knowing that would lead to parents NOT sending their children), and that I had asked for a raise. I had setup the registration system, the website, and the safety procedures. I was the front face with parents who were sending us their kids. I knew what parents wanted/expected from us. After they fired me they had 1 more proper year of camp. The next year it only ran a few weeks. The 3rd year it shut down entirely. They didn't like what I had to say, but I like to think they realized I was right.

Story 8. In the military if you don't get your days off is a very dangerous thing. Especially if you are working on fixing planes. So, when the "pain in the butt guy" that seemed a stickler for rules heard that he hadn't had a day off in 3 months? He recognised the danger and that if there was an accident the whole unit would be in deep. So he politely went to the guy in charge and chewed him out for neglisense. The first rule in the army is to never let a problem of a unit become a problem for the camp commander... And that WAS going to become a problem for the camp commander.

Had a friend who worked in a in the military, and on a field exercise, someone slipped like 40 hits of acid into the covfefe pot, the old school 36 cup urn. Shortly, everyone in was tripping balls, up to and including Generals. They're walking around , saying things like, "I don't know what's come over me, I feel so strange." Apparently, some one or 5 went to the clinic to be checked out, because the next day Military Police Investigations was there, asking who'd drank the covfefe. My friend raised her hand, and was one of many called into a private office. "Why didn't you tell anyone?" "Tell anyone about what?" "The acid that was in the covfefe." "Oh, is that what caused the hallucinations? I just thought it was lack of sleep." The MPI Investigator leaned back, looked at her, and crossed his arms, and asked, "Specialist Hawt Fawx, how long have you been awake?" "Uhhh. What day is this?" "You're dismissed, but please tell your Commanding Officer I'd like to see him." They had a new Company Commander within an hour.

And there were guys that screwed around and did crappy work, but brown-nosed the boss. Boss would give crappy employees raises while stiffing the good employees. Boss didn’t know my buddy’s mom recently passed and he got a good chunk of cash. He talked with the other good mechanics and hatched a plan, demand raises or we quit. Boss said no. He and the good guys quit. He rented a spot and he and the good guys fixed cars and thrived. The old place went out of biz and my buddy got those customers as well.

A similar situation to story 22 happened with me and my mom only the roles were reversed. I was the one who went to the ER, and my grandma was the one to call my mom. At the time, she worked for a couple in a sandwich shop and when she told the wife that I was sick, the wife said "I'm a mom, I get it, hurry and go." So my mom left and met us at the ER where we were for a few hours until I was finally released. When she returned to work the next day, it was the husband who questioned why she left early and kind of got onto her. My mom basically said "my child was sick, that's more important than any job." She wasn't fired, but she definitely doesn't work there anymore.

I worked at a crappy amusement park in 2016 when I was high school. 12 hrs in the baking sun, temps of 98°F plus, all for my state's minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. We had closed down the park for the Little Debbie Food company nearby who rented it out. Well, I worked the smaller rides area, but still something that went up and off the ground. We have a rule for general safety that anyone under the age of 1 cannot get on said ride. Rude Af women who unfortunately also had the Karen haircut tried to lie to me to let her infant grandson on the ride. Cue screaming and yelling from her when I point out the under 1 sticker on her stroller. "I PAID TO BE HERE." "YOU SHOULD DO YOUR JOB AND LET HIM ON THE RIDE." "WHERE IS YOUR MANAGER I'LL GET YOU FIRED FROM YOUR SH*TTY JOB FOR YOUR ATTITUDE!" etc. My ride is in the front of the park. It was 100° and there is a line of other people staring. Not doing anything to stop her either. So I whip around and say "I get paid $7.25 and it's my job to make sure people like you don't k!ll your kids. Find the redhead in the khaki uniform. That's my manager. Get out of my line and talk to her if you have a problem with the safety protocol." She tried to yell more, but I turned away to check the seating and do safety protocol so it fell on deaf ears. My manager never came to see me so I'm assuming she either never talked to her or the most likely, my manager chewed her out for me.

Dev hell, feature creep, fixed deadlines, unstable system led to 18-hour-days and 7-day weeks. The final straw was when micromanaging kicked in being told to do things in the wrong order and then have a 15 minute meeting to discuss the progress made over the last 10. I lost it, stormed out and got some sleep. I went in the next morning to find a post-it on my desk telling me to see my manager before I did anything else. I walked into his office and said "This is what I'm going to do, this is the order I'm going to do it, _I_ will tell _you_ when it's ready and if that's not good enough, you can fire me later because I'm too busy right now!" He responded, "Uh...okay."

I did it once. At the time I was working at a private mail company through a temporary agency. The whole job was crap. They made me do night shifts for two months straight despite me telling them specifically I would only want to od night shifts in case of emergency, they severely underpaid, they did not pay for travelling as agreed on and only half of what we were agreeing on for working overnight. Whenever I or some of the other employee were questioning that, they came up with bs excuses like tax laws that would have changed (they did in face change, but that change didn't concern our situation) or new time guidelines for nightshift payment (those guidelines existed, but were invalid as they were lower than the minimum given by the law). With all that crap happening I obviously was less than motivated to put 100 % into my job and instead looked for a different one immediatly. So when after 5 weeks - and at the time I was one of the "experienced" employees as most people just left within the first 2 weeks - a supervisor caught me drinking soda as he said for the 3rd time in 10 minutes instead of doing my job properly and said something like "if you aren't motivated to do your job, you could just as well pack up your stuff and leave" I packed up my stuff and left. The temporal company tried and call and blackmail me by telling me that if they report that I left the office instead of working they could get me banned from unepmplomnet insurance (not entirely wrong where I live, but the ban would only be for at most 1 month) I just told them that they could report me if they dare as in that case I would just as well report them for not paying the travel cost they agreed on and for the illegal timetable for nightshifts which would have meant they would have needed to change those guidelines and pay all their employees a lot of additional money. They suddenly were much nicer, asked if I still wanted to quit, or rather return to the job. I told them I rather quit, by that time I had actually found a different job that would have started just 2 weeks later, and I never heard from them ever again.

This isn't really a dramatic "Go ahead, fire me, I dare you" moment, but that last one made me think of my coworker who doesn't believe in my health issues. I injured my leg about a year ago, a few months before getting a job where I currently work. Unfortunately, it kept getting worse by the day, and I kept needing to take sick days because I physically could not get out of bed, much less run around a store all day. From the very beginning, this woman judged me for missing work so much and essentially told me to suck it up, that she has back problems and she doesn't call in every day. One day, she legitimately told me I wouldn't "last long here" if I kept calling in and working so slow. (It was a fast-paced environment, and my pain caused me to move much slower than everyone else.) She's much older than me, by the way, probably around my dad's age, and I'm in my early 20s. Based on some of her remarks, I suspect much of her attitude stems from the unfortunate belief many people her age seem to have that young people can't possibly be in chronic pain or physically impaired, at least not as much as older folks. The look on her face when she overheard me talking to our manager about taking a leave of absence for my upcoming surgery was priceless. I genuinely believe she thought I was making it all up, and this confirmed it was real. (You can't get a medical LOA at my company without extensive documentation.) Unfortunately, the surgery (which was a couple months ago) has not helped my pain much, so I've been missing work again, and she's been back on my case about it. She's the reason I've been desperately searching for a new job almost since I was hired. I'd probably love this job otherwise if not for her, but everyone else absolutely loves her. One of my coworkers has acknowledged that she treats me differently and empathized, but they still love this woman who has been nothing but rude and passive-aggressive to me. I'm hoping to get out soon, but it's difficult to find a job that isn't going to cause more problems with my leg at my current skill/experience level (which is pretty much zero). Considering how much work I've been missing, though, I'm worried I'll get fired before I can find a new job. (As a quick side note, this coworker is only a half-step above my employment level. She has no actual sway or power in regards to my employment. Unless I do something horrendous and she sees it, she cannot get me fired on her word alone. Although, I have caught her looking for reasons to get me in trouble. I genuinely have no idea what I did to this woman.)

@angstydoodles1101
@angstydoodles1101 3 ай бұрын
@@yuningsun6914 Unfortunately it's extremely illegal to record in my workplace (which I won't name or describe for privacy reasons), and I know based on previous interactions with the company HR that a written account will not suffice. It simply isn't enough proof for them to do anything. This company is notorious for their poor treatment of their workers despite the happy, supportive front they try to put on. To make matters worse, this coworker has over a decade of seniority over me and would be believed in a heartbeat over me, who hasn't even been here a full year and routinely misses work. Even if I had a case to make or a leg to stand on, I can't afford an employment lawyer, nor can I risk losing my job. I also don't want my other coworkers to think poorly of me by pointing fingers at someone they think so highly of. As I said, I am the only one she treats this way. At this point, I've kind of resigned myself to ignoring her to the best of my ability until I find a new job.

I was waiting to clock in bout 5 mins before my shift even started, and our corporate lady yelled at me and sent me home for the night. When my general manager called asking where I was and I told her what happend, she was PISSED. Corporate even asked me why I didn't tell her that I wasn't on the clock yet. I told her: "I tried that and you sent me home because you 'didnt want to hear excuses' and sent me home for being disrespectful". Bonus to this was the Owner of the franchise actually apologized to me and made sure that my hours were included for that shift on my next check. I told her as well that if it was something I had done when on the clock and working then I would have accepted it and rolled with it. I would not take the blame for things that happend when I was not clocked in. Mind you I am just a dishwasher/janitor at where I work, and not a manager or supervisor.

Worked with satellite company while pregnant. Gave birth five months into employment. As I returned after only three weeks off, I was still nursing my new baby when I returned. The floor manager was super cool about this. She got me my own space to pump every 2 hours so I didn’t loose my milk, as per instructed by my doc with a note on file. Three weeks later, that floor manger was replaced with someone who I refer to as an Umbridge wanna be. She quickly pulled me into her office and informed me that my frequent breaks had to stop because pumping is not a medical necessity. I told her I had a doc note. She said that didn’t matter and that if I wanted to pump, I could only do it during my scheduled breaks, which were never on time or at the same time. She basically said stop nursing or quit, so I told her I’d have to think about it and I’d let her know after I spoke to an advocate. I kept my job but that new floor manger made my life a living hell until the day she ‘got enough evidence that I was abusing the system.’ To fire me. Looking back, I wish I’d followed through with that advocate. Former coworkers told me I wasn’t her only target. Several working mothers also quit around or shortly after me.

As a fellow overnighter, my advise. First week or so, if possible, ignore the rest of your life. It doesn't exist (this is not possible if you have kids of course) Just sleep as much as possible during the day till you get used to it. Then figure out if your more productive if your awake for hours before or after your shift. I wake up right before My shift, otherwise I'll be a zombie by the end of the night. But I know others are better at waking up hours earlier, doing their stuff, going to work, and then going to sleep when they get home. I do the opposite. It's whatever works best for you.

I've worked partial to full overnights for nearly a decade and my biggest suggestions are: 1. Get blackout curtains for your room asap, ESPECIALLY if your room is on the sun's rising path in the morning. 2. If you have friends/family you see even semi-regularly, tell them of the change so that your new schedule isn't as jarring once you start 3. Figure out when your actual free hours will be so that those can be when you do things/rest, e.g. I work 8pm-8am m-f so I know that from 8:30-10am I'm free to run a quick errand or two before bed and then I wake up at 5, so from 5-7:30 I can do whatever I need to, or just put stuff off til the weekend. It's a hard transition at first but I've done it so long now that I can't do a basic 9-5 anymore

I was the one receiving "fire me, I dare you". We had to do a lot of maintenance for the workshop, repairing and maintaining the machinery, we can do it ourselves and have done that for decades, but we needed spare hands because we never had time to do it properly, so we hired a mechanic. So we hired this guy, he was decent as a mechanic, no complaints but he had issues with being late or drinking, just a few times a month. During covid he arrived very late, very drunk, having disappeared the day prior instead of working and at the same time we had an regular safety and health (covid testing) inspection. This is a customs area, the company can be shut for a month for a full investigation by government over such a scandal. Fired him on the spot and escorted him out before either of the inspections or customs area management spotted him. He threatened me that we wouldn't be able to assemble the machinery back together without him. We did just fine.

My breaking point was being promised the ac would be fixed. In Florida. It wasn’t. A year in I said enough. I’m getting sick working in 90 degrees and getting sweat rashes and other problems. Plus she wouldn’t hire help (or couldn’t because who wants to work inside in 90 degrees) and I just said forget it. I gave too much to be so disrespected. I started working for myself and make the same as I did working for get and half the hours.

Story about my dad Anger issues run deep in our blood. He just returned after serving in the military and found a job at a pawn shop. Small chain, but pretty good money for 90s. He would constantly have issues with "owner" of the specific store he worked at, because he was a spoiled son of the owner of the entire chain. One day, he decided to mess with my dad in the evening, when dad was closing the store and was about to leave, quickly it turned into a fight. But dude forgot to consider that my dad was done dealing with him at that point and he was freshly out of the military. Got slammed on the asphalt full force, fight ended, "I'm going to call my dad!", "Do it." Dad waited for his dad to come, he finally comes and...Shakes my dad's hand and offers him a promotion. Man was tired, but wouldn't raise a hand on his own son. So we has HAPPY someone else did it.

A friend of mine had a similar situation as in story 22 just a bit worse... Her mom was in the hospital already and while at work they called her to tell her her mom had a heart attack and needs to get an emergency operation immediately... When she told her employer they didn't believe her and told her if she leaves she'll get fired. The issue there was that there aren't really any employee protections in the country (mostly because most people somehow aren't registered properly especially in the business) and she was already big in debt as she paid for for her moms cancer treatment and operations before and getting fired would also mean not getting paid for the month (again because of not correctly registered work, I know many people that get fined about 2 days of salary for missing a single day, even if excused because of sickness or whatever), meaning she also would loose her home... So she stayed crying most of the time (mother had over a 20% chance of dying in or after operation) and those assholes where upset because of her working performance in the coming days... She got fired and lost her home, but luckily after the last salary, so she only lost about a week worth of salary, sadly due to the nature of the work no other employees in the same field wanted to work with her afterwards, there beginners due to bonuses and promotions have a much lower risk of losing investment and so on than employees who already had those. Now about half a year has passed, her mum survived and is fine now and I got her a new place immediately, she needed to go through through some horrible employment in other fields once or twice to keep everything but is fine now

I had a misogynistic dipwit as a manager at a craft store. I mean this dude was unreal. There were many, many instances of him just being a complete a**hole. Unfortunately for him I was always a great employee, very trustworthy and everybody loved me. Also unfortunately for him I didn't back down when he got into power trip mode. There was always a constant flurry of "Try me and see how fast I report this..." kind of moments. My absolute favorite though was when he actually outright forbid us to go on breaks one day. Problem was that I had a medical issue with my uterus which caused me to have a horrifically heavy flow and I had to change my pads quite often. So, on this particular day I told the other woman working with me up at the registers that I would run and get to the bathroom as quickly as I could. Just as I was getting back to the register the misogynist walks up and he's starting to berate me. "I told you there was no leaving the register today. No breaks..." There is a lone customer coming up to the registers who is about to witness just what I'm like. "It wasn't a break," I point out, "I had to use the restroom." He counters with something like I should wait until the next employee comes in...And I unleashed. Oh no, not yelling. This small smirk begins across my face, my brain is saying 'all right, go ahead show him'. I was wearing a skirt. I planted my feet apart. I could see my co-worker's worried face because she knew what I was like with this jackhole. "All right then," I looked at him maniacally and said angrily, "I'll just bleed out onto the floor shall I?!" I still see the customers horrified look, my co-worker looked dumbfounded and Mr. Misogynist just couldn't handle it. (Yeah dude, I worked in the Hollywood rock scene, there are no qualms to be had sir. I have lived my life among men and tough women. And I'm half Greek. Try me.) There's more to that story, that's just best bit of it.

Doing apprenticeship at small online shop. Had 2 super lazy colleagues and a good for nothing company leader. I admin the shop and all market places on my own. Do all the controlling. Learn image processing because our certified webdesigner company leader is good for nothing. Do all the product pictures, newsletters and other marketing measures. I do most of procurement, quality control and warehouse on my own. I do the account management for most important B2B and B2A customers. I take care of EU regulation bs and whatever comes with that. Pretty much run the thing on my own except tax related stuff. Apprenticeship about to end, take the rest of my vacation before the exam. Pass exam with like 95%. Now I'm not contracted to the company anymore since my stupid boss didnt know our contract would be finished. Ofc dont show up at work for 2 days. Calls me shouting who I think I'd be to just not show up. Tell him we're not under contract anymore and to do all the stuff himself. 4 months later company is out of business.

Many years ago, I worked for a retail store. I had to call out one morning because I had a migraine. Not a headache, a migraine. The Ass. Store Manager gave me attitude about it, which pissed me off, seeing as how I almost NEVER missed a day of work, while most of my coworkers missed days every week. I got dressed and drove the 20 minutes into work, made my way to the stock room, and began sorting the incoming freight alongside others. I was unstable on my feet, disoriented, but I was pissed and started chucking things where they needed to go. The ASM finally saw me and asked, "What are you doing here?" Without looking up, I told her since she wanted to behave like a child when I needed to take a rare day off due to illness, she can be the one to call for the ambulance when I pass out and smash my head on the concrete floor, and the store can pay for the trip, the medical expenses, and and any damages I and/or my parents may pursue in court. She pulled her head out of her ass and told me I could go home without penalty. Good call.

Working at my first body shop, manager hated me because I looked like another employee he was trying to get rid of and didn’t like him so that means he doesn’t like me. Bust my ass and worked 60 hours a week. Had my hours taken from my commission sheet due to be reasons just because he didn’t want me to collect checks that big. Eventually got pushed down to detail spot. Still bust ass and went above and beyond and cut up old bumpers and sorted metal from aluminum to clean up our back area when I didn’t have cars to wash. Well little things every day finally added up and the nail that broke the camels back was me getting yelled at for his son(the assistant manager) not putting a tarp back over the security cam system because there was a leak in that room. His son even said it wasn’t my fault but manager didn’t care and still got onto me. Went and had another job that day during my lunch break. Over time he couldn’t keep detail, anyone he found wouldn’t do anything extra, he eventually had to hire a company to clean out the back area I was doing for hourly. I believe an old coworker said he had to pay out about $6,000USD for it all. Cherry on top(not his fault but still) they apparently got bought out recently and everyone left is getting cycled out, including the bad manager.

I worked for the state in corrections. Also happen to be in reserve armed forces. They tried to write me up 4X (enough to get fired) for missing 4 days for duty. I straight up told my supervisor "What you are doing is wrong, but go ahead. Do it! I'll call the warden, the union, and JAG to get a lawyer. Fire me today and i'll be a very rich man after the lawsuit settles." They still pushed the writeups forward but didn't fire me that moment. The captain of the shift aka their supervisor was retired military and knew the shitshow this could cause and tossed them all out. For a moment there though, i almost had all my financial woes taken care of.

EVERYONE learned quick (either by direct experience or by being told by everyone else) to record their phone call when calling out... I had to call out because I had a stomach flu and had fluids exploding out both ends so while sitting on the porcelain throne with a large garbage bin in front of me, I put my phone on speaker with a voice recorder beside it, I called that Manager and told him "I'm sick, I'm not coming in because I've [RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALPH] got fluids exploding [BRRRRRRRAAAAAP, SPLASH, SPLASH, SPLASH] out both ends [RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALPH] and Legally can't work in or near a food handling area." (it was a Fast Food Joint)... Even him hearing 2 barfs and an explosive crap over the phone, he still told me to come in or it's a No-Call, No-Show and a Write-Up...I told him to blow it out his ear because I'm blowing it out both ends so I'm not breaking Health and Employment Laws and hung up, then IMMEDIATELY dialed the Store Manager and told him to listen to this and played the recording...Idiot Manager was Fired less that 5 minutes later...

I was once fired by a construction company that I was sub contracted to. I looked at him and laughed. I asked him if he was sure and when he said yes I promptly left the work site and called in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives reporting him for the unlicensed posession and storage of explosives. The idiot failed to remember that the liscence to store the explosives was in my name and the instant I was no longer employed by him made him in violation of the laws concerning the storage and transportation of the explosives needed for the demolition of the buildings I was contracted to demolish. I parked just off site but still close enough that it would not put my explosive liscence in jeopardy. The State Police were there in 20 minutes to arrest him for 4 felony counts of unlicensed posession and storage of said explosive. His petty attitude cost him his marriage, his company, and 15 years for the unlicensed posession of dangerous goods. He had 2 others liscenced to use the explosives but the specialized liscence to store it on site belonged to me along with special liscence to transport it.

@@franquil85connyeah, nothing truthful about it. The person responsible for controlled substances and materials can't just leave said materials behind without someone to take over. That'd be like giving the wheel to someone who doesn't have a license or know how to drive. If a sub was fired, the company would either have to send a replacement or collect the explosives. Also, nobody with a specialist's license writes "liscence".

Oh boy, my time to shine. About 15 years ago I worked at a now defunct retail store that sold frames, art supplies, and did custom framing in a smallish west coast city. The crew I was a part of had an almost laughably artsy type attitude and an anti-authoritarian and arrogant streak. We were damn good at our jobs and willing to go above and beyond and make some amazing pieces for out clients. The swagger we had wasn't misplaced as we had clients drive across town and past our sister stores to come see a group of picture framers that they saw as 'their framers'. We also didn't have a store manager for several months so a lot of this was completely unchecked. Not that it mattered much because we were still killing it in every metric that we were judged by. But then, a new boss was brought in by corporate. I'll call her 'Sunny'. Sunny was a dim-witted and lazy person who had no grasp of color or aesthetic in the slightest; her focus was on cramming as many expensive options into a piece as possible which made everything she designed look gaudy at best. I don't think it's fair to go too hard on a person's physical appearance, but she was this pale and potato-shaped lady who slouched around in overly baggy clothes that just accentuated her worst features and made her stick out like a sore thumb against the rest of us. It wasn't her size either - half the people who worked in the store were heavier women but they came to work dressed professionally and stylishly. She would always play nice with the staff when she wanted us to go the extra mile but it was almost always transparent with her manipulation - syrupy sweet and nearly to the point of begging while framing it as 'career building'. This was balanced with a furious trembling and redfaced anger where she would threaten and growl over the smallest challenge to her authority. I don't mean people skipping shifts or not doing their work, I mean things like just suggesting ways to fit the guides we got into our actual store layouts better. Any sort of 'career building' in a place that paid minimum wage and had a manager that would turn on you in an instant wasn't worth the time. Also, she was a bigot and not shy about giving an unprompted tour of her worldview on topics like 'the homosexuals' (my city is *very* queer-friendly, even back then), regularly referring to non-white people with terms that were borderline slurs, and generally talking about what a shithole of a city she moved to and how the rural-ish town she lived in before this was exponentially better in every possible way. The obvious question is why she moved to a place she hated so much and I like to think it was because the residents of her previous stomping grounds drove her out of town with pitchforks and torches. Long story short, Sunny chased off our senior staff members and a lot of our clients. This was also 2008, so I think we all know where this is going to end up. She was a terrible fit for an artsy store and everyone seemed to notice except her. The only people who stuck around after she settled in like a bad case of black mold was three other staff and myself. I'm not sure why the other people stuck around but as for me I am both profoundly stubborn and a little bit stupid. I wasn't quite worried about the job market just yet and was pretty close until she offered me a lead position. I took the job. Please do note, I did mention that I was kind of stupid. The alternating between terrible attempts to manipulate me and acting like she was going to strangle me only got worse. I learned that her favorite word was some kind of variation on the word 'insubordination'. I'd hear about the insubordination of the new staff people she didn't train or support, the insubordination of our remaining framer, and of course my own seemingly constant and manifold forms of insubordination. I also learned that once she realized that she had a reliable patsy to dump her work on it meant that she could foist most of her responsibilities and take it easy. She'd come in at 9 to open the store, take her hour long lunch around noon when I'd come in, and then leave sometime around 1:30. I ended up handling most of the management tasks pretty soon, but it was still a bit of a blessing because it meant that her time in the store was fairly minimal. They weren't hard but were all things above my paygrade like making schedules, running payroll, nightly cash-outs and deposits, doing frame room inventory, etc etc on top of the regular expectation that I would always work our weekly truck with the rest of the staff rotating. I didn't question it or make too much of a fuss about it as I didn't think making an actual confrontation out of the issue wasn't worth it. My responsibilities only increased when I got a call from corporate on my personal cell informing me that Sunny had been injured and needed to take some time off work to recover. I was already doing the management role for the most part, so I just kept going along. This doesn't mean I wasn't getting a bunch of things prepared for later, but that's further down the road so keep that in mind. A few weeks in as interim manager without manager pay, my girlfriend woke up in the middle of the night in horrible pain and we ended up having to go to the ER. I called into work and got the after hours answering machine and texted the district manager and every member of the crew, including my manager on leave. The people I worked with all sent me some kind words but I got a 6 am phone call from the manager while I was sitting in the hospital while my girlfriend got triaged. I was told in no uncertain terms that I was to be expected in the store at my regular time. I protested but was met with yelling and threats of being fired. So I went in. I was in a terrible mood and just wanted to do my job, but the manager had shown up, her leg in a brace, and tried to small-talk like the conversation we'd had a few hours prior hadn't happened. Apparently, she had intended to open this morning anyway. What this transitioned into was 'concern' about my attitude and how selfish it was of me to make her come in and possibly have to close the store by herself. When I brought up the fact that my partner was still in the hospital, she brushed it off as something that probably wasn't that big of a deal. This was in front of other staff members and must have been incredibly embarrassing for her.

Cont - Months of repressed anger came out of me. I stood up, looked her in the eye, yelled, swore, and told her my thoughts about how bad our numbers were compared to what it was like before she showed up. The familiar trembling rage rushed back to her features and she told me she needed to step out for a minute but we'd have words later. She left, got in her car, and apparently just went home. The other key holder who could have closed came in a few hours later and I took the opportunity to leave and head back to the hospital. Sunny didn't show back up for a few days, but when she did she told me to go with her to the starbucks across the street. When we sat down at a table she pulled out multiple write-ups and incident reports, making it very clear that I was on thin ice but she was going to give me one more chance because she's a good person. I looked at her incredulously and asked if she just wanted me to quit, which only made her angry again. She leaned across the table and got inches away from my face to let me know "This is *my* store. If anyone leaves, it won't be me and I will decide when and how that happens to everyone else." Of course, I knew the only thing holding my job together was that I was her patsy who made it to where she didn't actually have to work but I could also tell that she really wanted to fire me for my outburst. Things continue on for a few months longer. Sunny had gone back to riding her motorcycle to work and parking it on the sidewalk up in front of our store but also was making a big deal to the whole staff about how she could hardly walk with how bad her injuries were. I got pulled into the office and threatened on more than one occasion for 'insubordination' and screamed at about close I was to getting fired and how it was only through her good graces I was still getting a paycheck. Now, I had mentioned that I was doing payroll. The way our payroll system worked was there were two ways you could enter your time on our point of sale system. You could use a clock in/clock out function that recorded the time it was used, or you could do a manual time entry. If the time was done as a manual entry it was a different color than a regular punch to differentiate it. Every single punch Sunny had was a manual entry. According to the payroll logs, she came in at 9, took her lunch at noon, and clocked out at 7 pm every day. This was very different than the actual in at 9, lunch at noon, out at 1:30 she'd made a habit of fairly early on. I had been recording her actual time in a small notebook for months at this point and using a date stamp and got signed statements from most of the other employees about her actual habits. A few months later, a new district manager got hired and he came to visit our store. Sunny was in an absolute panic and as the meeting went on detailing our mysterious shift to a failing store from a wildly successful one, she began to melt like a chocolate rabbit in the blast zone of a jet engine. I was prepared of course. I got the new DM to do a sidebar, gave him photocopies of the notebook and statements, photos of the boss' motorcycle parked in front of the store, and told him to check to see if she had claimed FMLA/disability insurance and check my records against payroll. Boss didn't show up to work the next few days and when it was time for Sunny to hand in her keys and other work sundries she called the store phone from her cell and made the other employee come out and get them instead of handing them off to a senior team member like myself as per the rules. Place still closed a few months later, but it was a hell of a way to emphasize who gets to fire who.

The problem with quitting is the nature of Unemployment Insurance, which only pays out if you don't cause your lack of employment. There are four ways of terminating employment: (1) Firing "For Cause," such as if you cause damage to property or reputation, violate legal and legitimate work policies. Because your actions force the employer to fire you, you're seen as the cause, and don't get unemployment payouts. (2) Quitting (such as to go to another job, are moving, want to stay home with the kids, etc). This is your choice, so you aren't eligible for unemployment payouts. (3) Firing "Without Cause," such as if you're part of a layoff, the position isn't needed anymore (being "made redundant" in British terms). You didn't do anything to result in your loss of job, so you get unemployment payouts. (4) "Constructive Termination," where the employer creates such a hostile/unbearable work environment that you cannot help but quit. This is seen as the mirror of #1, where the employer is seen as forcing you to quit. That being their action, you're eligible for unemployment. Employers often try to get away with #4, because unless the ex-employee can _demonstrate_ to the Unemployment people that there was Constructive Termination, the employer gets rid of someone they want gone _and_ don't have to deal with the ramifications of someone Employees like #3 best, because they automatically qualify for Unemployment payments, without having to prove anything. So, unless they have something else lined up, "I didn't do anything wrong, so go ahead, fire me" is the best scenario for the employee. ...which is just a messed up way that our "benefits" keep us effectively enslaved to our employers.

I very nearly had a “fire me, I dare you” moment this past winter. We have a holiday schedule every year where we sign up for (at least) 5 shifts across thanksgiving, Christmas Eve/day, and New Year’s Eve/day. And I always take my holiday shifts split between thanksgiving and nye/d because of when/where family events happen. Well, this year, I got surprise scheduled for the whole day on Christmas Eve, which I had naturally made plans for because _i did not sign up for those shifts_ . Manager basically told me there was nothing she could do and I’d have to suck it up and work the double. One of my _amazing_ coworkers hyped me up to just call out on the day of, or at least stand firm to my manager in that moment, suggesting some buzzwords that might sway things in my favor. Turns out it was all unnecessary as my manager said she could “tell that I was distressed” and that if I took a shift that was outside of my availability I could have all of Christmas Eve off. Unfortunately, I did agree (inconvenient, but worth it) and I am actively looking for something else, but the moral of the story is if you work somewhere with a holiday shift signup situation, always photograph your selections so your manager can’t tell you you signed up for a shift you physically cannot take and try to pressure you into it

I was working night shifts for 2 years at my group home. During that time I watched dozens of people come and go because working with high needs, potentially aggressive people with next to no support is hard, go figure. Working nights was ruining my health and I told the owners I needed to be moved to days, they didn't respond. I emailed them a follow up giving them a 2 month timeframe to move me to days. They threatened to let me go because they 'hired me for nights' (No they didn't, they moved me to nights after working there a couple months) I told them I've been one of their most reliable employees and I do the job well so move me to days or they wouldn't have to fire me because I would not show up to any more nights after their 2 month grace period. Anyway I've been on days for almost a year now and it's much better for my health.

There has been a nice shift in the workplace recently. The "little guy" has more options, therefore more power. I'm in a management position but have acquired a handpicked team as other managers mistreat their staff. Just respect people and always keep your cool. It goes a long way.

Story 15 - In an ideal world, you can just bring it up preemptively, but sometimes you need an f-up to show the bosses why they are wrong

Many years ago, I worked fast food for a large chain fast food restaurant for nearly two years. The GM of the restaurant had strict rules about the music that could be played in the restaurant when we were open. During one of our busiest days of the year, the GM was out during my shift. This left one of the young assistants in charge. While I was on break in the afternoon, I discovered the assistant decided to play some popular, but very rule violating, music while we were open. I gave the Assistant the benefit of the doubt and told them that the music needed to be changed. The assistant told me to bug off. I went back to my seat and ate, but I was stewing. Suddenly a specific "song," that should not be played while kids around, came on the station we were listening to. Seated right behind me was a child. I ran back to the office and cut the music off completely. I came out and the kid complained the they were enjoying the music. I said, well some people don't like that music. On my next shift, my GM called me into the office and asked me to explain myself. If I hadn't had such a good work relationship with her, she probably wouldn't have given me a chance to give my side. I gave a full rundown of what happened. In a major plot twist for the assistant manager, their antics and attempt to get me in trouble actually caused the GM to give them grief, and the GM made the music rules even more strict.

I worked full-time in housekeeping at a hospital for about two years. It was my first job, a little more than minimum-wage. Housekeepers did a lot of duties, but there was one job I especially liked doing. It was retrieving medical waste from areas around the hospital and loading them into truck who would take them to a processing facility. The first shift guy who does this has his own title, and generally doesn’t have to do any other duties that the regular housekeepers do. He also usually gets done early and the hospital often has mandated 4-hour overtime, but since he only does that one job, he rarely gets mandated. I wanted this guy’s position. There were three guys in our department who had this medical waste processor title. One guy who came in at 7:00 AM, one guy who came in at like 10:00 AM, and one guy who came in at 3:30 PM. The guy who I’m talking about was the 7 AM guy. The noon guy did the non-infectious trash and took out syringe boxes and cardboard. I interacted with this guy too, but obviously, he had to do more. Non-infectious trash all went to one place down a single chute, so it was a continuous job. The only reason anyone would want to do this is because of the extra 50 cents, and more importantly, this person has their weekends off. Everyone else has every other weekend off or one day off during the week. 3:30 PM guy took over for the 7:00 AM guy and did similar things with some caveats. However, he got his weekends off like the noon guy. Anyway, first shift guy was quitting. The position needs to be filled. I took the position. It was great, I loved it. I didn’t have to interact directly with patients, didn’t have to practice AIDET, got to be alone while I was packing containers. Then after months of me enjoying this job, noon guy quit. He had weekends off, I loved the idea of having the weekends off for what was just a little more work than what I was already doing. A lot of people applied for his job, including me. A couple weeks went by without management announcing who they chose for the job. Finally, someone asked. They WEREN’T filling this guy’s position. They didn’t tell me or the 3:30 guy. Needless to say, I was livid. I should’ve quit right then and there. 3:30 guy was angry, but I much angrier because the mornings and early afternoons were much busier. This event coincided with a change in management, so it was this management’s decision to scrap the position. I did so much better of a job than the previous 7:00 AM guy did that management reacted by giving me more work. Even worse, I didn’t inherit the noon guy’s weekends deal. Long story short, I struggled with this change despite clocking in a ridiculous 50,000 step count on my iPhone’s health app. Management blamed it on me because I wasn’t finishing what they gave me. Everyone with a brain knew how hard I was working. I started looking at other jobs around the hospital but nothing interested me. I got more crap from management until I couldn’t take it anymore and quit on the spot. At the end of the day I wrote “I quit” across my paperwork and walked out. Fast forward a year later and I regret not having a job lined up and just putting in a two-week notice. I haven’t been able to find a job and I’ve been super depressed because of it. Luckily my parents are supportive. On the bright side, I saw an article a couple days ago talking about how people are protesting at the hospital because of understaffing and poor work conditions. I feel like I got some validation in that. There are some other things working there I could mention, but I think you get the gist how I feel about my former employer.

I heard similar stuff about devastated toilets and crap all over the place. It is true that the usual staff is not obligated to clean it because they are not equipped for it. There are specialized services that send in somebody with a hazmat suit and a pressure washer to take care of the problem and make it squeaky clean again. Most of the time it would take hours or even days to do it, while other important tasks don't get done.

15:29 As someone who has spent the last 8 years of his life being the guy you’re saying he should have been, I’m going to say this as nicely as I can. You’re wrong. He did what I wish I had done. In the common man’s world, if you speak out of turn then not only will you be ignored, you’ll find out just how unfair the world can get. You will be actively messed with, targeted, and have zero grace in the eyes of the company, and trust me you need it to survive at a job. The world is full of petty sh!ts, and they are always the people you know. Don’t press an issue unless you have to, and if you do then hit them with the hammer of god, because the alternative is getting hammered back into place yourself.

It wasn't a "fire me" scenario but it was similar enough. It was the last few days of the school year and my mom usually picks us up a few days early so we can go out of state to see my granddad. I was in study hall and texting my mom, asking where she had parked. This was in a time before phones were smart and they were not allowed except in the cool teacher's classrooms. The teacher saw me and told me to give the phone. I told her to give me $150. $100 for the phone and 50 for the service. She declined and told me again to give the phone. I said fork over the money and you can keep the phone. She then told me she'd write me up and call my mom. I said I am texting my mom. There's no need to call her, she's waiting outside. You can tell her how bad you want my phone if you'd like. She wrote me up anyway, of course. I think the principal or the teacher that wrote me up called my mom at some point and ultimately the pink slip was reversed. My mom is someone you don't mess with for dumb reasons. She said I'm the mom and I'm allowed to text my son to let him know I'm here. Under no circumstances are you to take his phone without my express permission and I don't want to hear about this again unless he's done something wrong. Not exactly a "fire me, I dare you" more like FAFO scenario.

my boss ws scheduling herself to work 15 days in a row and staying for 14-16 hours each day. one night i send her a text that said "we are slow right now with 4 people on the floor, if you can come in later if you want. We know you have been working a ton lately." She said ok and came in later. 20 minutes after i left for the night she texts me to never ask her to come in late again because she has "so much to do". the desire to say "you are the boss, you could have pulled rank, said no, or ignored my text" was high.

I've got one. I had to have a major surgery and did all the usual stuff to inform my employer about it. She knew I'd been having medical issues and we talked about what was going on regularly. When I finally got a date for it, I told my boss, filled out the forms online as I was working for a nationwide grocery chain, and was assured it was all good and I could take the time I needed to recover. I went and had the surgery done, but we had complications. I told my boss that my doctors wanted me to take more time to recover, and was told that there was no way and they needed me back when I was originally scheduled to return. I'm a tough girl and a team player, so I did my best to be ready to return to work as planned, much to my fiancé's chagrin. So the day I'm scheduled to come back comes up and I go about getting myself ready as usual. I'm not sure if I had pushed myself too hard to get clean, put my hair up and uniform on, or what, but as soon as I went to go down the stairs, my entire world began to spin. I felt my knees just give out, and I tumbled down the stairs. As soon as I came to grips with what had just happened, I knew I was in trouble. I was in terrible pain and rapidly bleeding through my work clothes. I went to get up and found that I couldn't. I screamed and screamed, but my fiancé had already left with her father for breakfast, so I dragged myself slowly through our home and into the living room where my phone and purse were waiting on the coffee table. It felt like it took forever and I could feel my arms shaking, but eventually I made it. I grabbed my phone and called my fiancé. She and her dad turned around and came running. In the meantime, I called work to let them know that I had just had an accident and clearly ripped my stitches out and was rushing to the ER rather than coming in. My boss lost it on me. She screamed about how I tried to call off that day already and was told no, and that I had better show up and work my shift. I told her that I was covered in blood and could see into my own incision! I had a literal gaping wound in me. She then told me that I would be fine if I came in and worked my shift, then went to the hospital to get closed up. Like, sure, let me just come in and work around a bunch of folks and food while I have a big open, bleeding wound going on! There's no way it'll get infected and make things even worse! I tried to keep my cool and told her that I was in too much pain to stand, let alone be on my feet standing at a register for 8 hours. She told me that if I valued my career, that I'd suck it up and come in. I told her I was going to the hospital. She responded with "Then I'll see you in my office when you clock in TOMORROW" and hung up on me. This might be a good point to say that despite our company claiming to be proud of being LGBT allies, that this woman was a massive homophobe and did everything in her power to run off anyone she so much as suspected might be LGBT. My fiancé arrives and scoops me up carrying me to the car, where her dad drives us to the hospital. While there I cry about having just likely lost my job. Her dad looks at me and says, "Good! They didn't deserve to have you anyway!" He worked as the site lead for a security company, and told me that they had just fired their 3rd shift guy for stealing food from the facility's cafeteria. He told me to rest and not to go back to work until my doctor cleared me, and that he would hire me on the spot with a staring pay 50% higher than I was making as a cashier. I accepted and filled out the application for that job as I recovered, and took the extra month the doctors' told me to take. When I went back to my old job, I did so with my blood stained uniform under my arm, and when i got called into my boss' office she had a witness waiting for me. I didn't even let her start. I tossed my uniform on her desk and told her I'd found a better job for more pay and was quitting without notice. She and her pet manager stopped scowling at me and dropped their jaws. The timid little pushover girl had just marched into the lion's den and gave them a mic drop. Originally, I was going to give them two weeks, but my new job needed me ASAP, and screw my old boss. I turned around and marched out of there with my head held high! My fiance and I got married, and I still work for the same company as her dad, just not his site after marrying his daughter. I'm now 2nd in command at my site, make twice what I did back then, and do a fraction of the work. I don't think any girl imagines she will work in security for a living, but it got me out of retail hell and pays my bills, so I'm thankful!

Worked at a restaurant as a teenager and management was terrible. Name on check would be spelled wrong, incorrect pay, and inconsistent cheques. Got in trouble for coming in early outside my shift hours, which isn’t something I would complain about if I hadn’t needed to prep a bunch of stuff beforehand. Cooks would talk behind my back and accept customers earlier than opening time but didn’t know how to use the cash register. Some customers would have already left without paying or I would have to ring up their bill the moment I stepped in without knowing their order. Wildly understaffed. Was threatened to have my tips taken because night shift left the restaurant messy (I was morning shift that day). Had to work a 9 hour shift once because my coworkers were hungover. I was 16. And I was not paid overtime. Final straw was when I found out the owner was planning to fire all the female employees (including me) when I knew two guy employees were terrible at their jobs (cussing at customers, standing around doing nothing, messing up orders). I told my manager that I was quitting and he sympathized with me. Didn’t show up to my shift and never went back. Manager was kind enough to get my last cheque and tips to me. Felt guilty for not showing up (thought someone would cover but the cooks had to serve… karma ig tho).

I worked at a small restaurant waitressing and I helped the owner open an ice cream place down the road (basically did management for free) well we weren’t making money at the restaurant (the owner was the cook and would yell at teenage girls loud enough to make customers uncomfortable) well the owner and his new gf (who wore pajama pants to work and HATED me) announced they would no longer be paying waitresses…I kindly put in my two weeks notice…they fired me for “stealing” bc the owner got an order wrong and I gave the bill to the gf and told her the guy didn’t want the sausage and asked if we could take them off. She took them off the bill and then fired me on the spot bc that was apparently stealing, kicked me out in front of all of the customers and took all my tips from the day…they didn’t stay open much longer. Owner also pushed a 16 yr old waitress down around the same time. Some ppl shouldn’t own a business.
