For 1.5 million years, African elephants have walked the continent of Africa. Their deep wisdom and the secure attachments that begin the minute a newborn arrives have been passed down through countless generations. Since 1991, Stephen Gianotti has had the privilege to be up close and personal with the African elephant as a student of their wisdom, an admirer of their generosity, and an advocate for their sustainable survival. His talk shares three lessons from the African elephant and three challenging questions that inform and could alter the course of our lives and, quite possibly, humanity.
Stephen Gianotti is the founder and president of The Woodland Group, an organizational development company based in New Hampshire. He also serves as board chair for the Global Society for Organizational Learning, based in Stockholm. With the exception of spending 15 years in the corporate world, where he was fortunate to travel extensively, Stephen has lived in New Hampshire all of his life. Stephen was the official Zoom safari
guide for www.elephanthavens.org Botswana’s first and only elephant rescue sanctuary, sharing the majesty and the mystery of the African elephant with thousands of people around the world. Africa occupies a very special place in Stephen’s soul.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

You neglected to mention humans are mostly dominated by patriarchy which disregards the balance of nature. Elephants are a matriarchy which is compassionate and nurturing. Thank you for your joy and love of country, nature and especially elephants. Beautifully done.

Thank you for sharing this fascinating insight into the connection with African elephants and inspiring TEDx talk. It's inspiring to think about the deep wisdom and generational bonds that these magnificent creatures have nurtured over the course of millions of years on the African continent. Your journey of being a student of their wisdom, an admirer of their generosity, and an advocate for their sustainable survival is commendable. The time you have taken to not only understand these magnificent creatures but also to be a part of the Global Society for Organizational Learning shows your commitment to the betterment of both nature and society. Thank you for sharing this remarkable story.

Wonderful presentation, Mr. Gianotti! I was transported from my living room sofa to the wilds of Africa during your talk. What wonderful, gentle, sensitive creatures these are. We owe it to future generations to do whatever we can to protect them. And loved the part about how you and your wife bonded over pachyderms. I’m suspect she shares your passion for these beautiful creatures. Thank you for educating me!

Beautiful presentation, Stephen! Exploring our similarities with other species, not just through our very similar DNA structure, but from our practices that are usually identified as human, but are common across so many species. The elephants are amazing creatures, as are so many other species. The system intelligence built into our inter-species relationships are just so misunderstood. Thank you!
