I was a bilingual elementary teacher in a Texas public school in 1995 when the Whole Language movement swept handwriting books out of the public-school classrooms, the consequences of which have been devastating. Common Core skipped handwriting altogether. Our friends at Zaner-Bloser held the line for direct instruction in handwriting. Now science is confirming the value of handwriting over keyboarding for every area of early literacy development. I have taught Zaner-Bloser for over two decades and highly recommend it.

@@MakingEverydayMagic My "Shortcut to Cursive" follows the Zaner-Bloser method and will help parents who might need some training in the fine art of cursive handwriting. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j5ZmZZqSysrRZqM.htmlsi=Sn2yothbSvp0k01F

Thank you for this!! Now the M and C makes total sense - manuscript vs. cursive! We tried the cursive in Timberdoodle's third grade kit but she didn't seem engaged, even with doing one page a day. These, however, look beautiful and I think she'll enjoy it more! Already ordered our book! 🙌

We are also going to use ZB Handwriting 2C next year. We used Grade 1 this past year. I had the Teacher Manual Grade 1 but didn't even look at it after like week 3 because it's not really needed at all. My kiddo loves those little videos. We use Spelling Connections from Zaner Bloser too and really like it. It really reinforces phonics with the spelling and using the words in sentences, and reading passages that use the words. I like that it's not just a random list of words to memorize and forget, but it's not nearly as involved as an AAS or something. My rising 2nd grader did it totally independent last year except for me giving the pre-test on Mondays and the test on Thursday or Friday.

We have been using the Getty-Dubay Italic and she has done so good with it... It is black and white so her treat for finishing her page is she gets to color in the image... I really like how easy they made going from basic handwriting to cursive... All the letters are rounded so it's easy when they just need to add the joins... We started with the book that came with the kindergarten kit from Timberdoodle... They also have an app you can download to a tablet (doesn't work on phones) and buy the books on there and they can practice and practice with the stylus so that is super convenient for us because we do go back and start over especially on letters we have problems with... I have even gotten their book for adults because my handwriting was horrid to me and I have had so much improvement 😊😊

Thank you for sharing. We are going into our first year of homeschooling and trying to get my incoming first grader to work on his handwriting and begin to learn cursive. Would you recommend us begin cursive in second? Since I don’t exactly see a 1st grade cursive

My daughter chose their 2c (cursive) instead of their 2m (manuscript). It included both! Started with print, then moved on.

We love handwriting without tears. It really instills top to bottom left to right and doesn't have the dash lines in the middle that can throw kids off a bit. My oldest was in occupational therapy and she told me about this program. It was created by occupational therapists. I use this for all 5 kids They have had gorgeous handwriting... um now the older ones are like doctor handwriting 😮 Also.. this *may* help someone's child but they have paper (the kind with the dash lines) and the top line is red then the dash lines then bottom us blue. So you would say start your A at the red now go all the way and stop at the b. Etc But if you are $ tight, you can easily just use two different markers and trace those lines

I'm shopping around for my kinder. Do you own the mat man wooden pieces set also? If so in your opinion are they worth the price? Thank you

@Its-Bea I don't own the mat man pieces so I don't really know from personal experience if it's worth it. If you have a child with developmental delays I think it would be. My first kid was delayed and I spent more time on helping him be aware of drawing body parts. My other 4 just naturally started drawing the body parts themselves with a little guidance. HTH Oh.. I do have the wooden pieces for the letters. That is great hands on

I just wish they had wooden pieces for ALL of the letters. My kid’s name starts with one of the two letters they don’t include in the building set, and I just feel like that would be weird for him to not even be able to write his own name with them.
