In person is my preference. But, that could be because I've been playing for 45 years, and there was no online play for most of that. Of course, being old and retired, I don't have the scheduling issues that younger players face, either. 🤠👍

I prefer in person by a long shot but sometimes it’s not possible. We have players in person and 2 other players in 2 other states so that works too

We started playing hybrid. We have some players locally and others on-line. It makes a big difference. It was awkward at first, but now it feels very normal.

Agreed with all your insights. having played alot of online dnd since the pandemic, i'd say i'm good with either. it's more of what's convenient for me. haha. like: 1. if i'm Dming, or the game is being held at my place or a nearby location, i prefer in-person. 2. if the game is being held at a friend's place and he's far away, i prefer online.

I vastly prefer to host at my house when I'm the DM. So much easier to prepare.

@@FlutesLoot agreed. when you host, do you feel beholden to prep food and drinks for the guests? my wife feels that way and i tell her i don't mind assigning the players to bring their share but she gets embarrassed and insists we prep enough food and drinks for everyone.

@@TheRobversion1 I never feel beholden to be a food prepper. It has always been a "nice to have" sort of thing with all my friends. I'm getting to a stage in life where I'm more financially able to quickly provide food, so I enjoy that. I've heard some groups expect it, and I don't like heaping on expectations from people I hang with, haha.

I much prefer online personally, and text based at least for IC chat. It's just much easier to think through responses that way. In person, or voice RP in general, just feels awkward for me, not to mention I need to think of a response right away or someone else starts talking and then it's hard to get a word in. Text based makes it easier to actually think through what my character would say, which feels much better for storytelling. Plus it's nice to be able to read through logs to remind myself what happened in previous sessions sometimes. Mainly though, I just have too much anxiety and tend to be a bit on edge in group situations, being alone behind a computer screen with no noise besides whatever music the DM decides to use for the game, if any, is a lot easier for me to just focus on playing my character.
@FlutesLoot

This is a great note! I like to run a hybrid style that plays in person but utilizes text chat as much as possible when not in session. It allows for moments like what you described without only playing when physically together.

I like playing online vs in person. I don't have to drive anywhere. I can look stuff up quickly, and message other players while in game. Helps with RP and communication. Also allows for good use of telepathy and other mind communications that can be done for just those privy to the communication. I'm also a multi-tasker, and in person games move too slow for me if I can't do something while it isn't my turn.

Opal here, it's the Alive brand, and it's incredible. If you like it a bit sweeter, add some liquid stevia, but only after you've poured the rootbeer into a separate cup because it WILL cause a reaction (I've made that mistake more times than I'd like to admit..). Their Yerba Mate is also phenomenal.

It's interesting hearing you talk about the "learning curve" to online play (which I do think exists) because I started out playing online and that just felt like learning DND to me.
@FlutesLoot
@FlutesLoot Жыл бұрын
The learning curve online compared to in person is mostly about technology and social adaptation. Playing in person, I can tell someone to roll a d8. Playing online, I need to explain to them how to roll a die that hasn't been pre-set and pray that they remember next time so I don't have to keep helping, and then help them figure out why the roll was whispered to the DM instead of shown to everyone. :P They both have their quirks.

I had played online and in person. Both are great in both ways. I'm deaf so online game wasn't easy as there's bot that do sound to text but when it comes to naming some npc, creatures or places it can be difficult to translate to text as it focus on common words. But it was good experience. I enjoys playing in person as I enjoy feeling the dice and that it feels like fate is in my hand, that I'm rolling for the fate of situations. Also easier to read lips in person. Both are good in both different ways depending on how you see it. I personally prefer playing in person.

I generally prefer in-person, but in moment when I really, unironically needed to play, I could only play online (first - my father was in hospital with COVID, I couldn't leave my house; second - I was stuck in a village for a one really unfun reason). Also, where I live now (temporary, but probably for a long time), there is only one group and I'm uncomfortable with them (they also only play Pathfinder, but it's a group the reason why I'm uncomfortable with the game, not vice versa).

As much as I want to play with both of my D&D groups IRL, there's no reliable way for all of us to be able to meet consistently. Or cheap. Having a group of players from different countries has its downsides... So online is basically the only choice for us. But one day...

I've used Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds. The regular that we use is Roll20. I've not had to find a fresh group online, but if I were to do so today, I'd start by finding a Discord community that I jive with and see if there is a "Looking for game" type of channel to network in. The local game store can be a gold mine if you're lucky or a total miss. I'd prefer to recruit I know to play.

Any tips on prepping vallaki

Would that be a useful video? I recommend becoming familiar with the factions, and what they want, and then letting the players decide how things go. The book gives useful ways to introduce factions. I also recommend deciding how much to use Vasili. Those are quick tips that may not be specific enough, but that's what I think off the cuff.

@@FlutesLoot I've watched most people's video's about CoS prep but it's always nice to get new and different perspectives. There's lots of good and varied advice out there but most of it's through writing. (Blogs, posts, whatnot) More videos would be great, IMO. My group's about to go to Vallaki within two or three sessions, so I'm trying to get all the content I can.
