Just came here to read the comments. My takeaway is, Vancouver played a heck of a series but they didn’t adjust and relied on their formula during the regular season. GSAA and unreal shooting. I hate it when markets make excuses for their team. The oilers beat them and if this or if that or if another thing happened. It doesn’t matter. Ultimately the better team won this year but I expect Vancouver to come back stronger next year.

I have to imagine losing Boeser so unpredictably played a big role in why they lost game 7. It’s not the fact they lost him it’s how they lost him in my opinion. The power play probably lost them the series. They had the man advantage in parts of the game and they were utterly putrid during it. Like they could hardly enter the zone when the game was in its closing stages 6 on 5, and the 4 min power play they had barely generated anything. And of course, Edmonton’s power play was insane and always is insane. So what lost them the series? I’d say failing to capitalize on their opportunities on the man advantage and not generating enough shots on a pretty shaky Skinner.

The canucks shot totals were not good, 100% agree. But you cant say the shots they did get weren't high quality. The team's strategy is literally hold onto the puck and wait for a better look rather than a low percentage shot and risk losing possession. Their high danger chances to SOG ratio was high.

Face it. When the team with the worst percentage of shots on net for every try taken plays the team with the best record for shots on net for every try taken, it's almost impossible for the worse team to win. In the end it was all the shots the Canucks took that went wide of the mark that sunk them. They had almost as many tries as the Oilers, and they did not show any quit. The Oilers are just better defensively than most people give them credit for. The Canucks work ethic was definitely there, but the skill level is not.

@@shanegleeson5823 Thisssss. There's more to the series than just 'shot percentage'. The Oilers struggled to find a rhythm without McDrai scoring 3+ goals a game (for the first few games at least), but the Canucks were struggling to even find their way into the offensive zone the last two games. They just seemed to lose their wheels by the end, and they weren't skating those extra inches or feet so they were losing a lot of poke battles for the puck and struggled to support each other on the boards. The forwards also weren't getting open for breakout passes and leaving the defencemen to flip the puck out of the zone which just kept locking the play up at the blueline where the Oilers were absolutely taking us to task. I was thrilled that our boys got as far as they did, and I loved to see them battle for those last 8 minutes and really get hungry, but they got properly beat those last two games. Missing Boeser didn't help but I honestly felt like we just didn't have any gas left in the tank, and I don't think we'd have enough to get past Dallas either.

@@shanegleeson5823 It kind of looked like Skinner's struggles, and Silov's heroics were the main reasons for the outcome being what it is. There were definitely stints (especially later in games after Edmonton built up a lead) in which Vancouver had the bulk of scoring chances, though.

Demko is a bigger loss than most realize. The Canucks play a more aggressive attacking style when Demko is in net (2-1-2). This is how the generate offense is by heavy and aggressive forecheck during the regular season. There is a higher risk of a rush chance going back the other way, and they have more confidence playing this style with Demko in net knowing he could make the save to bail them out. When DeSmith/Silovs is in net, the Canucks play the conservative style (1-2-2) which saw their offense drop off in production. The reason why a lot of Canucks wins were comebacks in the playoffs is they play a conservative style (1-2-2) when the score is tied or they have a lead. Once they trail and getting late in the game, they go back to the aggressive (2-1-2) style. If the Canucks had a healthy Demko for this playoff run, the story could really be different. However, I don't see them getting by Dallas even with a healthy roster because the lack of quality top 6 winger will always be their downfall.

Oiler and Leafs fans don't know what great goaltending looks like so they can't tell that Silovs, despite all the highlight reel stops, still let in some bad goals. He had a negative GSAA for the series. Speaking as a Canucks fan, nothing really went wrong, except for the Demko and Boeser injuries. The Canucks overachieved in the first half, came back down to earth and while they didn’t play their best games in 6 and 7, they had some luck go their way. As well as Tocchet did, maybe they need to adjust to a slightly more offensive style while maintaining that defensive structure. But we’ll see. This is the first time in 10 years that they’ve been any good, so expectations should have been a bit more tempered. They were good not great and things had to go their way for them to keep winning. It’s a close league. Canucks fans who say they should have beaten the Oilers easily are homers. I’ve been a fan since 1990 and I knew to get this far, they’d have to have some luck. That luck ran out when they played a team with 2 of the best players in the world that finally learned to play some defense and they got a couple of key injuries. I’ve seen Pettersson excel in the playoffs so I’ll hold my judgment for next season. Queue the racist comments about “lazy” Swedes. I’m sure Peter Forsberg has something to say about that, as well as a couple of guys named Ulf.

Missing Boeser was a huge part. Lindholm did great. His positioning was great in the playoffs and he made a number of really impactful shots, goals, and assists. Decent on forecheck too. Petterson was screwed by having nothing on his line. It was him vs the world. Series would have been 4-1 or 4-2 if Ian Cole didn't get as much ice time, and if Juulsen wasn't given the chance to throw for a hit. And as others said, Demko in net means the Canucks play more aggressively + save more of those goals that Silovs missed but were technically saveable. Also Big Hog is looking great, and if he can get some more consistency, he'll help these lines a fair bit.

@@sushiwajushwa4168 How are the Canucks lucky when we won the division pre-playoffs, and beat Oilers every game in the regular season? Nucks aren't lucky--they played fine and good hockey, but made too many mistakes to make it to the next round. If brock had Mik's chance, the game was tied. If Cole wasn't a literal oiler for 3 games, we won 4-1. If Demko was around, we probably won 4-2. There's no excuses, they played some games great, some games poorly (6/7), and some games had some poor luck and dumb mistakes (2/4). And Oilers need the lucky now. Stars don't have an injured main goalie, a throwing d core, and an out star player. Y'all have an injured star, a shaken main goaltender, and your main 4 are all tired. Also Canucks did not play good all playoffs, so there's another huge reason, not once did they look like the team in the first half of the season, yet they still brought it to round 2 game 7 with Edmonton winning the series by the smallest of margins possible, game 6 aside. Next year ya just need to the team to realize what playoff hockey is like.

Jesse ... Demko in net CHANGES COMPLETELY the Vancouver offense; they don't have to play passive, or tenative, or whatever, to protect the kid Silovs. So, the offense you say didn't score, so a change of goalie wouldn't have mattered, is a complete falacious argument. The offense explodes knowing they're not worrying about Demko, who, no matter how well Silovs played (with ALL that defensive systems help!), is one of the best G's on THE PLANET. Demko would have meant Canucks forwards (and even D jumping into play) would have been heading UP ICE, not playing the 1-2-2 protection scheme. Vancouver lost their BEST PLAYER after the 2nd game of the playoffs; they still made it to within 2 goals of the West Final. Pretty good. They would be playng Dallas now if Demko hadn't gone out. Definitely not true, Canucks healthy are obviously the better team, but that is playoffs, injuries will ruin you, especially if it's one of the top 3 goalies in the league. Edmonton deserved it yes.
@JDnumero1
@JDnumero1 27 күн бұрын
@johnjohnnston3498 not true. The Canucks barely averaged 2 goals per game in the entire playoffs. That is not enough firepower to win. Canucks went 3 for 23 on the PP. That has nothing to with Demko. It's the PP coach, and the goal scorers not scoring. 4 min PP without a single shot on net. Your PK was average. Average might win a game, but it doesn't win a series. Canucks made a big step forward this season, but they won't be able to keep everyone they got either, so hopefully they can at least maintain what they did this season, next season.

Edmonton having trouble beating an injured Canucks team is kinda a red sign there Dallas is going to destroy them.

@RC30018 who said Edmonton wasn't banged up? They had several sick players in the last 3 games. It's the playoffs, everyone is battling something.

@@RC30018 Edmonton losing the goalie battle is the red flag. The good new for them is that they've seen that Skinner can play well enough, even after blowing a couple of games, and that Pickard can also take over in a pinch. Still, goaltending is going to be a concern when Skinner has bad games, and the backup is someone who had never really proven himself to be close to starter material. If the goaltending doesn't come through for them, I agree that Edmonton is done. The underlying numbers over the course of the season would point to the Stars and Oilers both having their hands full. It would be a shock for either team to win in less than 6.

Not enough talk about the biggest fraud in the league.. Quinn hughes. Coming off a Norris caliber season and he was an absolute ghost all series. Complete black hole on defense too, not sure how people can defend this guy anymore. Bouchard was 10 light years better than Hughes.

@@dragonsymbol one of the better not best. I'd say he was the second best D man on Vancouver and maybe the 4th best in the series. Also it's important to note that the Canucks actually had a slight possession edge when he was out on the ice against McDrai. He was the only Canucks player that had that stat by the way. MxDrai dominated possession against everyone else. I think it's worth noting that if Ekholm and Bouchard were taxed with shutting down McDavid their offensive numbers would have suffered hugely too. So you're right not up to his usual standards but he had the toughest role too.

Canucks had the worst power play in the playoffs, it’s the reason why they lost the series, if they get 5 pp goals? Canucks win the series, they gotta switch something up with it, the 2nd unit gets 30 seconds max on the power play.
