On today's episode, Joey uses Locked On Stars listeners comments and feedback to drive his conversation on what went wrong for the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Final. The overwhelming majority pointed to special teams deserving the most blame for what happened against the Oilers. Joey lays out the numbers from the series on special teams, plus a trend the Stars should be concerned about with Pete DeBoer and his staff. We also discuss how many of the Stars best players such as Roope Hintz, Jason Robertson, Miro Heiskanen and more left much to be desired in the series. Connor McDavid alone had 10 points against Dallas and took control of the lost two games which finished off the Stars. In the final segment, Joey gives a nod to Joe Pavelski who plays on hanging up the skates after this season. Plus, the exciting future in Dallas with players like Mavrik Bourque and Lian Bichel who could be key contributors for years to come.

Thanks Joey, great analysis as always. Agree with all you said here, was weird that Pete, didn't change things up with Oilers, as he did in first two series. Curious, why? Just didn't make sense at the time, and of course now. Was interesting to hear Pete's history, thanks for diving deep and sharing. No way Pav's should have had more ice time than Benn, Sequin, Stankoven, Hintz etc. Placing the bigger slice of the blame pie on Pete makes sense.

@ScottStenlund-ys8iqThis is why the nhl is so exciting right now, it was an amazing season and even tho my team didn't win they had a great run like your team did in what I think is one of the most competitive seasons I can recall. There was and is so many teams capable of winning it all right now it's wild and exciting. Great time to be a hockey fan in general! Our teams may have lost but they have nothing to hang their heads about. Goodluck next season!

Still gutted about the manner of the playoff exit but the future is bright. Excited to see more of Bourque next season and really hope management addresses the D core. Also, would be nice to bring in a PP specialist to fix that clunker of a showing. Too many talented players to have that level of failure…

Two Western Conference finals in a row is a great accomplishment. Not what we wanted, this year for sure, but still great. Agree with both Special Team failures and "running out of gas!". Please no Suter or Hakenpaa next year. Build up a solid six on defense please.

This stuff is so much more complex than any stat or trend can bear. There were chances to score, but they didn’t because sometimes there was a goalie in the way, named Stuart Skinner, who everybody dismissed as a chump. Or maybe Robertson’s stick didn’t have the right flex or curve, or Hintz’ skates were tied too tightly. It’s probably not DeBoer, though. These days we always look for some trend or stat that maybe explains why our hearts are aching. But I’ll bet you could dig up some disturbing trend for any team that ever hoisted the cup, and yet they found a way to win. But my Oilers are going to the final now and maybe it’s my heart aching in three weeks’ time. And I’ll be the one looking for answers. So it goes. I really enjoyed you guys this series. Keep loving your team. We’re all going to miss Joe.

Thx Joey. Impressed with your deep and thoughtful assessments on this channel throughout the playoffs. I agree with you and would only add that injuries of key players and coach's selection of certain inexperienced players to be on the ice at certain critical times was a factor. Suter, Pavelski, Delandria should never have been on special teams and they all hurt us in those specific situations. It also didn't help running into a very good Edmonton team that had a cake walk, in the first round against Kings and were fresher, healthier and deeper as a result. I think we need alternate strategies for OZ entry for deeper into playoffs. The chip & chase as a strategy worked well in Rnds 1&2 but Edmonton adapted to it and made us utterly ineffective with it, or sustaining any kind of OZ presence (except only when we turned the afterburners on and burned out the Fwd side of the bench). Let's see what we do in the draft.... we need more skilled puck-possession type of Fwds if we can find them. Hopefully our promising young crew continues upward but we need more Star Players to carry us deeper.

I just listened to your pod from yesterday and couldn’t believe how eerily similar the complaints you had were the exact ones we had when he was VGK’s coach. Unfortunately, I think DeBoer has reached his typical ceiling like he did with SJ, VGK and now the Stars.

I have been talking about this all year we do not have any player that wants to go hang out in front of the net. All year long we've been looking for the perfect pass instead of just shooting the puck to the net and go and get the rebound. We also have to play more physical and have a stronger FORECHECK!! Robertson is soft!
@OTBregularly
@OTBregularly Ай бұрын
Roope was a net monkey and ended up missing games because of it (post whistle checks to the spine that never got called). Robinson I wouldn’t say is soft but I will say he had some terrible turnovers. Now, Harley is softer than a frog belly. He constantly looked over his shoulder before getting a puck on the boards and was more concerned with dodging hits than puck control.

A combination of Dallas refusing to adapt the PP and Edmonton having a (let’s be honest with ourselves) legendary PK was the difference. If they scored even 3 or 4 PP goals they may have at least had a game 7 to play.

Oilers turned a corner this year in terms of playoff hockey, I think it's good for players and teams to take responsibility no matter what when they fail, but I think both Vancouver and Dallas fans miss the mark in the analysis. When the top players of Edmonton are playing their best, they are the best players in the world, and there's not really much that other teams can do. When other teams have success, it's Edmonton choking in some way - and the Oilers choke often, and fans of other teams feel like the dynamic is reversed from reality IMO. We don't look at the teams that lost to Gretzky as 'failing', and I think if the Oilers can manage to keep most of their players, this era will be viewed similarly.

Pavelski should have been sat at least 1 game. Stars problem was lack of scoring. They lost board battles, rarely crashed the net, and had poor starts to series and games. De Boer has a soft coaching style. Getting bad at reporters is misdirected anger. He should and need to be more forced accountability after poor efforts. Edmonton coach scratched 3 players after they lost and went down 2-1. They tried bigger, it isn't the league trend. FL will pummel the Oil because that's their game. The Stars have to be more physically dominant. Roope, Robertson, others have plenty of size.

Some have to go for some changes and in my head looking at the roster he just doesn't make the cut. That's no disrespect to him either the roster is very good it just needs a few minor upgrades. Some more grit size and speed is required here to help us get over the hump I think. Duchene.. sutter.. Pavs to start.. there will be others that need to be replaced too but we will see what happens. It's been a great and emotional season but unless they want the same sad ending it must be upgraded. The league is loaded right now. Making it this far in the league right now is not an easy task or accomplishment. Conference final 2 years in a row... going backward would be really sad at this point. Let's go stars!!

The Stars are very inconsistent. They can play so good on certain days and then turn around and look mediocre. Plus, they don’t have that killer attitude. You really don’t know what we’re going to see on a given night. Frustrating!!! They had a great team this year and shit the bed. These seasons don’t come around often and they play playoff games like regular season games. MHO.🤷‍♂️

Kris Knoblach deserves most of the credit, his adjustments after game 3 made all the difference. Inserting Broberg for Desharnais really upgraded the Oilers speed on D. Dallas isn’t a very physical team so Desharmais size wasn’t needed. The Oilers also figured out the Stars long pass breakout that burned them repeatedly in game 3.

Not a better team but their best players showed up and ours didn’t. The depth was even but too many appearances of Johnston and Stankhoven while the top pair of Robo and Hintz continue to be mostly invisible along with a goalie who may not be that dude. The least said about the incredulous ineptitude to be supreme on home ice and game 1s the better.

Game 6 was the most important game of the series and the Oilers got dominated for 60 minutes. The first round they played a backup goalie, the second round they played a....backup goalie. Then they play the stars, first two games no roope. Edmonton isn't the better team. If you can't admit that edmonton had an easier run then there's no helping you. @@leedag5089 So much anger! Our goaltending was better, PK was 100% and PP was excellent. Your goaltending was not very good and your defenders looked like pylons sometimes. @@leedag5089 I’m being a realist Edmonton did not have a good round two almost got beat by Silovs give that guy some credit but even when tired and sick they had a flu bug go through that locker room they still found away to over come the Canucks and win. The Stars just fell flat yea it could have been injuries and tiredness but the Oilers were just as I injured and tired and battled through it.
