What were the sparks under the Space Shuttle before launch?

Before a Space Shuttle liftoff, showers of sparks are seen flying around under the Space Shuttle's three main RS-25 engines (SSME's). What are those sparklers for and do they ignite the engines?
The sparks are emitted by pyrotechnic devices called technically Radial Outward Firing Igniters (ROFIs) and colloquially "sparklers".

If you have covered this one, please send me the link. I have trouble understanding why the Challenger exploded. The other question I have about that will be hard to fathom, but I would really like to know: did the crew know that they were not going to make it? Did they suffer? It would be nice if the answer to both was "No", but I would like to know.

US rocket engines run "fuel rich" so unburned hydrogen is always coming out of the engines. That's why excess hydrogen could build up.
