Update May 19 2021: VICE News produced a series of seven panels moderated by Frank Luntz from December 2017 to January 2019. Recently, it was reported that Luntz was on Ted Cruz’s reelection campaign payroll in 2018. VICE News was unaware of this affiliation, and Luntz did not disclose this information at the time of these productions.
West Virginians had been led by Democrats for decades, but they overwhelmingly backed President Donald Trump in the 2016 election. It’s that political reality that democratic Senator Joe Manchin lives in as he faces a re-election fight against West Virginia State Attorney General Patrick Morrisey.
In most states, Trump’s overwhelming popularity would mean a democratic senator wouldn’t have a chance, but Manchin has more than a chance. According to one of the latest polls out of the state, which was conducted before Manchin voted to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, the senator was beating his opponent by eight points.
So what is it about West Virginian voters that allows them to walk a line between support for Trump and support for Manchin and how did Manchin’s vote for Kavanaugh affect their view of the Senator?
Frank Luntz, a veteran Republican pollster, convened a group of 12 swing voters in West Virginia to try to answer that question. People who were chosen to participate either had to have voted for both republican and democratic presidential candidates in the last three elections or if they’ve only voted Republican in presidential elections, needed to have expressed support for Manchin himself. The focus group was conducted on the evening of October 5th, after Manchin had announced he would be supporting Kavanaugh’s nomination.
Some saw his vote for Kavanaugh as a nakedly political move, while others said it means he’s listening to his constituents. But no one seemed particularly happy about the state of politics right now or their choices for Senator.

Yes and no. Statistically it's not a lack of money per student it's a lack of accountability for how those dollars are spent and a lack of requirements to become an educator. For example the average American student is funded by the government 12500 annually but the average Native American student is funded a flat 20k yet statistically Natives extremely under perform in school. So it's not necessarily money it's how the money is spent.

should have started 50 years ago, like they did. start with school boards and work your way up, like they did. never give an inch, like they did. now the electorate are dumbed down to a degree that there is no way to catch up for 50 years and now you are 100 yrs behind. Dumbocrats are too nice and forgiving for their own good. should have listened to the hippies. We really need to get rid of all funding for k-12. The government shouldn't be teaching our kids. Government sucks at everything they do. Government teaching children is the easiest way to indoctrinate the entire population. Ultimately, when you pay taxes, you are paying for a service. Why would you want to pay the government for that service? When the government messes up, you're still forced to pay taxes. When a private entity messes up, you can chose to stop giving them money. Privatizing schools will create competition, and ultimately make education much better.

Yeah, that alone should make him ineligible for a supreme court seat. I find it strange that the DNC doesn't have some lawyer willing to challenge his nomination on constitutional grounds and instead went the route of using Dr. fords testimony to try and influence the vote. They may just be setting him up for later impeachment based on his purgury and partisanship once they regain house and or Senate control. Having the Ford testimony get wall to wall coverage instead of his previous rulings was very odd and worrying though. It makes me wonder about the state of our Republic and our media.

I don't know if many people know this but sharing a traumatic experience to other people even if that person is your own family it's still very hard to do. I've never been sexually assaulted but I've been bullied in middle school. Even until now(8 years later) I still can't tell the whole story. It took me 6 years to told my family "I was bullied and I need help". I still vomits every time I tell my story. Not telling your story doesn't mean you're weak because you need a special type of courage to share your story.

PoDH O I would argue it’s not even that... everybody handles trauma differently, some lift the emotional burden by telling people they trust, others recoil and deal with their trauma privately. while the choice to deal with trauma privately is a bit risky, some people can do it and be ok. I can say that from experience. not telling someone doesn’t make you “weak”, it makes you tough enough to go at it alone.

We need to get rid of public education and get the government completely out of healthcare. Ultimately, when you pay taxes, you are paying for a service. Why would you want to pay the government for that service? When the government messes up, you're still forced to pay taxes. When a private entity messes up, you can chose to stop giving them money. As far as healthcare goes, you're responsible for yourself. Free healthcare just means it will be payed for through taxes. You shouldn't be allowed to force someone else to pay for your healthcare and education just because you feel entitled to it.
@slavkopejic3140

I'm not an American, but I'll answer your question. First of all, we don't look at human health as just a commodity. I'm not paying the government, or health care for other people. I'm paying insurance tax for MY health care. Sure, I might not need it right now and some unemployed countryman of mine do and that is OK. Who knows what will happen in the future, he could be employed paying taxes and i could be in his place... When I need medical care I know nobody will ask my credit card first and send me home because I don't have cash. Or ask more money for preexisting condition. Because we all pay and government is not doing it for profit like insurance firm would, it's a lot cheaper and I have ease of mind. Wealthy people can always pay for some extra private insurance if they feel like public one is not good enough for them. Now I have so much questions for you... If you have that Milton Friedman outlook that market is King and government is ruining it I don't understand why would you pay any taxes and have government at all? If people in one of the richest countries in the world in 21. century aren't entitled to health care and education, what are they entitled to? Is it just defense? But if you don't care your neighbor or countryman is dead because he couldn't afford health care, why would you give rat's ass about some Korean, European or Israeli? Why not just maintain nuclear triad so no one will ever attack you and spend 10 times less taxpayers money on military? How come you are not at all worried you'll get sick, loose job and insurance, or not been able paying jacked up preexisting condition prices? It couldn't happen to you, or you just don't care? If that somehow happens, you perish and there is no one to pay for your children's education, you don't mind them working couple of jobs and still not being able to meet ends meet all their lives? How come US seems to be only developed country that think it is more important and beneficial for their economy to have rich insurance firms instead of healthy and well educated citizens? i don't get it. Thanks in advance for explaining at least some of this to me.

Evan Underwood As I said, I'm not American, you can not scare me with big bad word like socialism. I lived in communism and I can tell you they are not the same. Furthermore true capitalism or socialism never existed or ever will. The key is in finding the right blend of the 2 so both employers and workers are satisfied, at least in my humble opinion. Your big solution of getting more jobs and raising wages is cunning but you failed to explain who will do what, and more importantly why, in that scenario. I see you gave it a lot of thought.

There's nothing out of the blue about a Supreme Court nomination. Even if you don't believe Ford, it's a fact that she has been disbelieved and ridiculed. Interesting conversation. While I don't agree with their choices I can totally understand where they are coming from and why they are making those choices. You want them to give up coal? You need to replace those jobs. You want better jobs? Improve education. You want lower addiction? Improve access to health care! What's unfair in this country is education funding being tied directly to property taxes. All schools should be equally funded.
@SplotPublishing
@SplotPublishing 5 жыл бұрын
No one is asking them to give up coal. They need to get it through their heads... coal is leaving THEM. Not the other way round. THERE IS GOING TO BE NO MORE COAL. It's just going away, whether they like it, or not. it's already going away, which is why they have so few jobs. No one "had better" do jack shit but THEM. Get off their asses, and get to school or move or vote for someone different. Because Joe Manchin is NOT going to get them jobs, and Donald Trump is NOT bringing back coal... no one is. Get it? The teachers in that state went on strike to get paid better after years of being denied adequate funding BY THEIR STATE. It's not local property taxes that are the problem. It's their STATE. It's their anti-union bullshit. It's THEM and the people THEY elect. If they want better, all they have to do is demand it, and vote for it. It's not rocket science.

But that's the thing H Clinton's speech was taken out of context by right wing media she didn't actually say she wanted to end coal. She said she wanted to fight climate change while keeping people employed including in coal jobs and diversify west Virginia's economy so they're not so dependent on coal. One part of her speech was taken way out of context and used by the right to get them to oppose her.

My problem is when women say, "Women are equal to men, women are as strong as men, women can do everything a man can do", and then when women fall short in men's eyes, either in terms of courage, strength, or morality, they say, "Yes, but it's different for women." You just can't have it both ways, either you get treated like a man, or you get treated differently, because things are different for women, but you can't flip-flop between the two, depending on which suits you best. You just are not going to get any respect that way.

I wish Hillary had spent time with coal mining families in the Appalachian region, and then gone in there with genuine compassion and support for those who are currently losing those jobs (which, although horribly dangerous, also paid well for people without college degrees for generations). And after that, she should have talked about specific alternatives, training initiatives, subsidies, green energy apprenticeships--just described in detail what comes next, because coal really is going away as a major source of fuel, and there's no sense in pretending otherwise.

It is very bad on several points, while the deep rooted economic politic lead by Obama is in fact bearing good fruits, Trump support of bad industries like coal, his support of conservative lawmakers, his support of nazis, corrupt, violent and racist cops (Arpaio...), his apparent distrust of facts and the fact that he lies all the time has set you, as a country, on the topic of social progress and equality for a all a hundred years back. He's been most divisive and doesn't care to bring everybody to the table, he's more like a child obsessed with firing people. Colored people, LGBTQ+, women, leftists, and all oppressed classes of societies are alienated by him moreso than any other modern right wing president. His election might have been fixed and he wants to stifle the investigation of it. I won't even get into his character, truly abhorrent and paradoxical for a Republican "family values" man, but he might be an outright felon or even worth. Stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes? For years? Helping his father evade? 450 millions??? Tell me evan, how many defunded hospitals is that? How many people dying in hallways does that account for? How many schools not having the ressources to buy the good books? But here's the thing. I think you know. I think you know he's bad, despite the constant propaganda. I think deep down, most Trump supporters are not really stupid, they're just partisans... of a stupid ideal. But they won't care for the facts anymore. And that's pretty sad. I mean I don't care, I'm not a US citizen but it's truly startling to see that I know more than most of them.

It’s a sad story that’s all to familiar across America... ford motors in Detroit is a good example

He invented the phrase “death tax”. He helped shape Newt Gingrich’s messaging and the “Contract With America” in the 90s. He’s responsible for a lot the divisiveness in politics. The fact is that because of technological improvement the same coal deposit that took 200 people a year to mine a few decades ago can now be done by 8 people in 6 months. The only political policy that could possibly bring back coal mining jobs would be the banning of such technology. Thinking otherwise is to simply misunderstand the situation
