Desire can be a significant hindrance to living a purposeful and tranquil life. As soon as we want something, we fall into a state of lack, and we feel restless. And the obvious way out is to fulfill that desire so that we can feel content and happy again. A much-discussed phenomenon in the current age that arouses such restlessness and lack is the so-called fear of missing out, also abridged as FOMO.
The fear of missing out occurs in many different scenarios. For example, a stock market investor fears that he’ll miss out on profits when he doesn’t invest in a specific stock at a particular moment. Another example is a college student who never misses a party because she fears that she’ll miss out on the fun.
FOMO often drives people mad. Studies show that the fear of missing out can lead to extreme dissatisfaction and can be hazardous for our mental and physical health. FOMO is associated with loneliness, depression, and anxiety. Thus, behind this trendy acronym hides a dark, devastating experience amplified through social media, which presents a neverending tsunami of snapshots of our lives’ highlights.
So, where does this fear come from? What do people who suffer from FOMO actually fear? And how can we shut it down? This video essay explores the fear of missing out and presents suggestions and solutions from ancient philosophies like Stoicism and Epicureanism.

When we look at party pictures, and so called friends enjoying and having a great time- without us, it feels like we are dispensable. That feeling of not being needed is what drives FOMO. So having a strong sense of self worth, not needing approval from outside source and understanding that actually nobody out there really cares much about each other either, can help in reducing the lonely feelings. Loneliness is all in the mind. I have realised that one can be lonely even with hundreds of ‘friends’ in the best party, and not feel alone even when sitting and having coffee in your own house, without anybody present except your self. It’s all about perspective, which unfortunately can only come with age and experiences.

the point is, your path in life is different from everyone elses. Another person has not encountered the same obstacles you might have. In fact your path is most likely so unique, it makes no sense to compare yourself with anyone. Just compare yourself with your own past self. Do you see progress? cool! If not you might want to work on yourself. Not even touching on the fact that many social representations are fake af.

The fear of missing out is probably more like the fear of regret. We're always seeking to get more and more from life thinking that it can improve our current situation and regret makes us sad because we envision what could've been rather than what is.

True but you have to remember that you have to work and that is no joke. You don't get the best things in life without fighting for it, thus FOMO has also its use. If you just sit on your ass, do nothing, look at the wall / sky and wonder, then guess what - nothing is going to happen! The way I see it, you have to constantly fight for a good state of mind by cherry-picking the very best opportunities that life has to over. Otherwise, you will end up with the worst opportunities that life has to offer. There's no middle ground, you are all in no matter what you do or don't do. It's as simple as that.

I really dislike how everyone says, "live each day like it's you'r last, for you never know when it will end". Thats complete, utter bullshit! For me its just the opposite, that you can actually kick it, do nothing, be unproductive and still be happy! Wow, you DONT have to be this amazing do-it-all and have an extraordinary life. Not to say that those thing aren't good (I've traveled the world, done some very, very, very strange and crazy shit), but to realize that just cruising through life, being grateful for the opportunity to wake up and just go through the motions in a peaceful, curious manner. people get too worried that they're not living their lives...then go live! DO all that crazy shit, and you'll realize that you don't need that stuff. Just find a balance. Yes, you should live a lot of life like its gonna end, but live even more of it knowing that you don't have to worry about "living". Just relaaaaaaaaaaax...breathe.......and look up!

People is people everywhere, we share almost the same issues in every point of the world and traveling is really nice, there are awesome things, but also the daily and ordinary life, have amazing things to experience and appreciate.

FOMO is something I've being working on moving past for a while now. I remember hearing a quote that went something like "If you're not happy with what you have, then you'll never be happy with what you get". That quote stuck with me and is usually at the forefront of my mind if I'm feeling anxious. However, the realisation that I'm not missing out because everything will eventually decay and not matter has formed a new problem, where I feel like everything is futile. My motivation to move forward has never been lower because I've lost all reason to aim for anything. It's making wonder if FOMO is actually necessary to make you feel alive and purposeful.

The part about 'what if there are no parties, what if there's a virus..' really resonated with how I felt through this past year and now when the world has opened up. It's like this pressure to be out and do things with random acquaintances every weekend when the weather is good. Just last night I went to 4 different bars, joining different groups, just like countless other out doing the same, drunk to the point of making any sense in their small talks. I feel much better when the weather is bad, rainy and I know everyone would be home so I don't feel any need to do anything than just be. During the Covid lockdown too, I had a peaceful good time doing the things I love inside my home but with the summer reopening and everyone out doing things, I feel this FOMO from time to time. A restlessness in many people for doing the same pointless stuff even when they'd feel better with some quality time with themselves or just a close friend or two.

We must think what we are afraid to miss out on. When you mentioned the fear of missing out on war I thought about the boys that went as far as to lie about their age to get to the front in WWI. They were genuinely afraid of being the only one in their group who hasn't been to war. The nightmare and absurdity that awaited them was never something worth seeing.

@@Soulfulboy1111 Hi. Years ago, I immigrated to the United States from an old soviet country. I was young, inexperienced, and alone. Growing up in my country as a child, I rebelled against everything - how teachers treated students, how the systems and organizations controlled everyone. Traditions didn't make sense to me. I couldn't do anything by rules, always did everything my way, and got in trouble a lot. I was, of course, forced to live by authorities, but my nature rebelled. I was lost and confused. I understood what was going on with me after living in the USA for many years, working for others, doing anything to survive, trying to be in conventional relationships, trying to be a traditional woman; I suffered; I was miserable. I kept walking away from people, couldn't work for others, I suffered until I couldn't take the pain anymore until I sat down to study and understand what was going on with me. Understanding my conditioning helped me to understand others. I realized I was sensitive to how people behaved and treated each other; I realized why. This understanding allowed me to realize what absolute freedom is and to be more compassionate towards myself and others. Understanding the human condition is essential.

Try eliminating what you think others want. Most times people think what they want is centered on thinking what others want and have. Don't do that! What do you want? If you do it correctly and it can be difficult due to interference from the past thinking, you'll find you don't actually want much. But the no desire crap isn't real. There's always gonna be desires. You have to own something that keeps you moving.

Another gem of wisdom from this great channel. Honestly, I have no FOMO whatsoever. I just simply enjoy the moment at hand doing whatever I'm doing, whether alone or with company. I could care less about what others are doing because I'm always enjoying my own life in the present. So it's impossible for me to "miss out" on anything when I'm focusing on my own life. Also trying to compete against or compare myself to anyone else is a ridiculous waste of time. Just being myself & enjoying the moment is all I need to be truly happy.

I sort of had a big shock as of recent. I had a really big FOMO but I realize that life brings you everything you need to succeed and that the future is better than the past. We all enter this world for a time and we have a departure date that is coming. In between, everything you need to do will be done so you don't have to worry about missing out and however insignificant you might think your life is you don't have to worry because it's going to all play out just the way it's supposed to. I realize that now later in life and I was so worried about things that when it actually happened, I realize that everything that the reason we all suffer is because we don't allow whatever supposed to happen actually happen or we try to be something that we're not.

It's interesting how comparison works both ways for FOMO. It gives rise to the fear of missing out... comparing what we have to what's more out there, what others have. And it also can break the pattern... showing us how much value something would have in our life a few years from now versus how much we value it right now.

This really makes it seem like the cure for FOMO is depression. "Worried about missing out on exciting things? Remember that most things actually suck and none of this will matter when we die. The only certainty is that things will just keep getting worse and even those who seem happy are secretly dying inside. Give up on everything and await the merciful touch of death. " Imagine that being said in a Ben Stein type voice.

I used to walk into the library and be discouraged by all the books I could never ever read, so would leave with no books in hand. It has taken me a long time to understand that I can't do all, or be all. It's caused me a lot of pain, it's damaged my self-esteem, and at times my ability to function properly. I know now that I'm simple and that what makes me feel satisfied changes daily. I go much more with my own flow now and am much more peaceful.

@@JunguianPhantom I think, for the most part, we all die alone. Living alone is more difficult, but even then for most of us (I believe) there is a deep need that we think others can fill, but they can't. I have come to believe that the ultimate challenge of life is learning to befriend, respect, and appreciate one's self (not in some narcissistic way) but in the gentle, humble, and quiet way that would have come very naturally had the feelings and motives of others, along with our pressing need to please not have interfered. None of us who have majorly struggled to achieve, fit in, be liked/loved can ever be fully healed...that would take a complete memory wipe, but I do think that we can find some peace and contentment by acknowledging that our own existence has meaning, purpose, and value in ways that may not be currently obvious. The piddling advice I would give to you, my friend, is to be patient with yourself. Provide to yourself the respect and love you deserve. Increase your interests...find stuff to do or learn about that really stimulates your thoughts and feelings about life and passing the moments beautifully. Push yourself, as you are able, to conquer your fears while remembering that it is you in control. Your perception is yours and yours alone...no one will ever see through your eyes and determine what is beautiful and right, or the opposite. Smile, let yourself smile and feel content and peaceful. Do all of this for the potentially loving friend that resides within you and has been waiting for your attention. Remember, even the most famous music and movies are about loneliness and dissatisfaction. It's the way of the material world. Sorry my message was long.

i missed out on my high school farewell, trips, parties, college clubbings happily. My friends would always point out how boring and introverted i was. But that's that the truth. I never really cared about things I didn't value even before i turned a stoic. If you know what you value the friction in letting go of everything else becomes zero.

My FOMO is on never getting a stable career or finantial security. I know death will take me and my loved ones, so I have no fear of it, but indeed I await it, I know it will release me from my pain. Money and stability are the things that I want, to take care of my parents in their last years, because I know I will never have children of my own, or a wife, nor true happiness in a significant way, but if at least I can provide for my parents, I can die happy the day after their passing (I know that for sure: I will take my life someday)

Tonight i felt that it takes me more courage to stay home on a satudrday night, doing homework and drawing, than going out with friends to a club to get drunk and star awake until very late. A few years ago, when i was a teenager or in my early 20's, it was the opposite. It required a lot of effort for encourage myself going out to a party or something. I think that as i am aging, i really just want to liv a simple, boring, peaceful life, doing what i really love, which is, most of the cases, something that implies being alone or just with the few people i love. But then the FOMO attacks, and it tells me that this is not the lifestyle that the real people should be living, that i should be doing what everone is doing because that is part of the mandatory life experience, that there are thing that are mandatory, for example, that you should use your 20's living a lot of excess. I think that we should really define ourselves and what we really want, like, and love to do in order to avoid this FOMO

I had a full life of fun social events when I was younger, but as I've aged, I no longer participate or engage in socializing. I actually feel satisfied watching from the sidelines. Or perhaps from a detached perspective. You aren't missing out if you're comfortable being in your own corner of the universe. Life doesn't always have to be sad when we're not busy doing things with others. Don't worry about it, just make plans for yourself. If you're not there, you're probably somewhere else, so why not just stay where you are?

I think a lot of people's so-called "FOMO" would disappear or cease to be problematic if they could learn to understand and accept their decisions fully as well as schedule their lives better/more effectively. This way, people wouldn't feel they were "missing out" so much nor feel sorry/regret what they were currently doing.

This is also the reason why it seems people whose children died during disasters or wars took it "better" than, say, people who lose their child to cancer or car accident nowadays. It doesn't make the loss any less. But at least they know they are far from alone in their loss - an experience that is probably the worst anyone could endure.
