She-Ra and the Princess of Power is a prime example of complicated characters; both with it's villains and it's heroes. In this video I'll be focusing on what makes Catra a redeemable and heroic character and what makes Adora a flawed and compelling protagonist!
I'll break down their motivations, character arcs, backstories, relationships, and more to get a better understanding of what exactly makes Catra a Hufflepuff trying to be a Slytherin and what makes Adora a Slytherin trying to be a Gryffindor... and how that one quote by N.D. Stevenson is the key to their fabulous character arcs.

At first, I thought the show was kind of childish and only okay. But while it may be designed for children, it's written so well that I have no choice but to love it.

Great video. The main heroes are shown to be complex in their own ways. Adora- Appears to be the perfect girl/woman. Confident, brave, determined, caring, and straightforward. But deep down, she can be insecure, a perfectionist, and can take things too seriously. Bow- A combination of a jock and a nerd. Practical, mature, level-head, and smart. But he can crack under pressure and has a sensitive side. Glimmer- Entergetic, supportive, caring, and courageous. She can be easily angered, acts recklessly, and can do questionable things for understandable reasons. Catra- Rebellious, ambitious, cunning, intelligent, deeply cares for others, and protective. However she can be a douche most of the time, a slacker, aloof, and has a fiery temper. She also has a hard time opening up and showing vulnerability.

Thanks! These are some great analysis. I’ve got to talk about Bo and Glimmer some time for sure!

@@WritingWithAsh You should especially about Glimmer. Glimmer is one of the most misunderstood characters in the series (second to Catra).

I like to say that as random and even perhaps as ridiculous as it may sound, She-Ra is my favorite Masters of the Universe show in the same way Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is my favorite MCU film. I ALSO wanna do a video essay on that one day as well. There are simple reasons. ND and Gunn are excellent at emotional honesty which is what these stories really need, and excellent and thematic potency, but to me, I think they are very similar in terms of what they tell people and their villains. They're stories about how an unhealthy obsession with purity and perfection is a central ingredient to the ideas of eugenics and fascism. It's a belief that isn't centered on actually wanting to get better, but instead hating the best you can be due to brainwashing and unrealistic expectations set by egotistical narcissists. Expectations made to only satisfy the ego of people who want total control over their creations. I'd argue Horde Prime and the High Evolutionary are the same villain archetype. They're both perfectionist cult leaders obsessed with purity and throw away their own creations like trash the second they show signs of what they deem as "imperfection". They both scold their creations with the very same words *"I made you!"* and both have lines saying it's a horrible crime to think they are worth something more than they gave them from their creation. I would also say, as another stretch, Doflamingo from One Piece is the same way. Even if he never really says the word "perfect". These three villains are what I want to center on in that future essay. Ultimately, both She-Ra and GotG Vol. 3 say that our strength doesn't come from an obsession to reach a nirvana that never existed in the first place, or to believe there are simply those destined for greatness and others destined for doom. Instead our strength comes from introspection and realizing that while we will always have flaws, what matters is how we work with them and in tune with them. Not trying to erase them. Insecurities are natural. They happen to everybody. Having them is not abnormal or horrible initially. What matters is how we deal with them. That is what the stories tell us. Ontop of also being able to break the cycle of violence your masters taught, and that you have a right to have a happy ending AND save the whole world even if a flawed "heroic" order tells you otherwise. And if that wasn't made anymore clear from what one reads above me, consider how the messages become very clear to see when you remember arguably the most famous lines of both stories: *Entrapta to Hordak:* "Imperfection is beautiful!" *Rocket to High Evolutionary:* "You didn't want to make things perfect. You just hated things the way they are." Another excellent essay. I'm subbing now and sharing this on Twitter. Great job.

Thank you I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Your take on this and the parallels between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are amazing, I didn't even see that but you're so right! I love that messaging.

@@WritingWithAsh Yeah, incase you didn't yet I'd highly recommend checking out my She-Ra essay on my channel too! I talked about stuff like ths for a WHILE. After the Godzilla one I'm editing now, and then one about Spider-Man, I'll do another She-Ra video! I can't wait to see what you have next! PS - Angella's sacrifice reminds me of Yondu's at the end of Vol. 2...

I suppose, yes 🤔 I sort of think of her as a redeemed villain, personally. Like someone like Zuko from ATLA.
