How did you determine the look for this Goddess? She doesn't look middle Eastern but European. Is there a significant reason for this particular aesthetic?

Hi Líoba, I love your goddess painting. We here n Ireland have a lot of goddesses including Palu (goddess of cats) or Boann (goddess of cows) or the Morrigan, or even the banshee. We also have St. Brigid (her holiday was yesterday), female patron Saint of Ireland nature, women and springtime. We make crosses out of reeds, straw or paper to put over our doors for her protection. Hope you like the ideas!

Okay, I’ll try recommending stuff that aren’t as mainstream from where I’m from. First, I'd say Hecate deserves some love in the future! Many people know her by name but don’t know much about her and she’s often misunderstood. She was one of the Greek primordial deities, patroness of magic and boundaries. She was often depicted as having a single body and three faces, or as one single entity in three different bodies- regardless, each head looking at the past, present and future respectively, as she was believed to have the ability to foresee the future and see visions of the past. Her domain was in medicinal herbs, poisonous plants and necromancy; note however that what we think of when we hear "necromancy" today doesn't necessarily correspond to what people actually practiced. Our view on necromancy is heavily influenced by much later medieval views on the practice- which were heavily fueled by the religious superstition and fearmongering against anything that could be considered pagan. Necromancy at the time was mostly just worshiping chthonic deities, embalming the dead and rituals whose purpose was to put the souls of the dead at rest, commune with them or look into the past or future- far from being a dark or immoral practice. Hecate’s characterization was also benign despite the inconsistencies among different sources and myth versions; she was a goddess defined by her compassion for all living things and drive to help. She took no part in the war between Gods and Titans. She was the one to help a distressed Demeter when her daughter Persephone was taken away. I also read recently somewhere that the familiars she nurtures and keeps by her side were several minor mythological figures who were previously humans, but were transformed into animals by the gods as a form of either punishment or mercy- and I think that’s pretty cool. She remained unmarried and preferred a solitary life among her plants and animals, occasionally popping in to make a cameo out of nowhere and help people one way or another, sometimes even taking a maternal role. There was also a custom called the Deipnon. People left a meal every full moon at a crossroads or entryway, to appease the goddess and restless spirits. Based on an anecdote from a theatrical play, beggars and people who struggled financially often ate from those. In terms of symbolism, Hecate was usually associated with the crossroads, borders, doorways, dogs, serpents, torches, keys and daggers. In some versions, the Cretan sorceress Circe (mostly known for the role she played in the Odyssey) was her daughter- which I think is also cool. On a similar note, Cretan/Minoan deities were super interesting but sadly we don’t have much information available about them. The whole mythology around Zagreus was fascinating (he was favored a lot in Crete). He can be seen as a standalone god or an iteration of Dionysus. Similarly some consider Britomartis- who was associated with the hunt and moon- as a localization of Artemis but she still had her own lore. Idk if any of these sounds interesting.

LILITH!! Recognized her right away. Over time her name was in different forms beginning with the Sumerians. Inanna/Ishtar/Lilith. Statue of Liberty has ties to Lilith since she was the first rebellion against tyranny. Adam wanted to control her, she did not want to be controlled. So Eve was made who subdued by Adam. My second tattoo is Lilith by John Collier (Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood) 1889 instagram.com/p/CEsyYC3J9gw/? Cheers! Would love to see more mythological artwork!
