While we were getting our first service done on our 2023 BMW M1000RR Competition, BMW was nice enough to let us interview them about how to mod and service your bike to retain your warranty, and what BMW looks for when it comes to denial and voiding a warranty claim.

I found BMW to be more than fair. After 2.5 years and 16K miles, I blew the motor on my 2020 S1000RR. Specifically, the wrist pin broke on the #1 cylinder driving it into the top end and releasing the rod to spin around the crankcase grinding out a canyon of a hole releasing all the oil. My bike had a Stage 2 BT-Moto flash. Though I reflashed it to stock before towing it into the dealer, I am sure they could detect this in their comprehensive diagnostics. I was also open about this with the dealer SA. I find honest relationships to work the best. After sending all data to Germany and analyzing it, BMW not only expedited a brand-new motor to the dealership, but an oil cooler, front sprocket and chain (hit by the thrown rod), and Dunlop Q4 rear tire (oiled by the motor leak). BMW even asked me if any of the scratches on my bike were due to it going down because of the oiled rear (I honestly said no - due to a previous theft). They also paid for my subsequent break-in 600-mile service. BMW completely stood by their product and more, and the BT-Moto flash didn’t matter here despite the enormous cost to them. BT-Moto also generously gave me an updated flash file for the new motor/software. I was treated exceptionally well with outstanding service. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hLCEaLOWmajKk6c.html

Agree sometimes it's about the relationship. A lot of riders claim that they just reflash to stock before going in and no one would know. Aftermarket flash providers like to claim that as well, which is completely false. BMW will know. I've got my 2021 K1600B with BrenTune stage 2 flash and always tell my dealership not to touch my ECU. Whelp about to go sign paperwork for this Multistrada

@@beastmode3537 Of course 16K miles is too soon to blow an engine. In fact, any mileage is. Blowing an engine, even one as high performance as the S1000RR, is an extremely rare event. Shit happens, and with all manufacturers. What distinguishes BMW is both their far longer warranty and the exemplary manner they stand behind it. BMW made me better off than before I blew the engine.

Sometimes, its covered when its flashed, sometimes its not. All depends on relations, variables, and circumstance. Count your blessings friend.

@@Breathemusic4202 I agree that maintaining good relations is key to navigating gray areas. Having the dealer on my side may have helped. The opposite certainly could have hurt. However, the biggest factor here was BMW corporate's analysis of the ECU to ensure the motorcycle had not been abused in any way. Also, I did not take the Brentune option to raise the RPM redline limiter, which ensured I didn't have overrev conditions. Another factor may be that my bike was one of the very first brought to the US. My understanding is that some of the early ones were a bit more prone to blown motors. Thus, BMW was likely more understanding here. With that said, BMW went well beyond just replacing the motor and making good on their contractual obligations under the warranty. They made me better off than I was before I blew the motor. This is a rare level of service.

I was taught a long time ago, "you pay to play". I've always planned mods around not getting warranty support. Most companies don't even want to cover your claim even if you're stock. Great video showing people things that might not be obvious when you start modding.

He explained what mods will void the warranty. Even exhaust without ecu flashing will void it if problems occur as a result of being lean. The mod has to be directly linked to the issue. There have been zero warranty voids as a result of our flashing. See CaliMoto on KZfaq. Put a hole in his motor with our flashing and 100% covered under warranty.

Most of my mates have flashed their BMWs. And while none of us have had hardware engine failures Our dealer over here in Europe knows we do it and in private conversations they say they run better flashed. As they run less lean and cooler. We can even ask them not to plug the bikes in at services so we don’t need to reflash them. I guess the test comes if an engine fails and bmw would Blame the flash however you can easily flash the ecu back in a few minutes. Our official bmw dealer in Europe fits full systems from akrapovic onto their bikes at our cost before pdi so I can’t see there being an issue with any of it. However maybe it’s country specific on some level. I know a mate of mine had a serious engine failure on an s1000rr first gen. Well outside warranty and bmw helped cover some of the cost of the replacement parts. Which surprised us all. They didn’t even need to do that. Also here you cant do your own servicing and maintain official bmw warranty. You must use a vat registered dealer who uses official bmw parts. Always best just using an official bmw dealer for inside warranty services.

@@BT_Moto Then there are those that got denied warranty for the famous crap coil pack issues . This is a well known issue to BMW. So I guess it's who you get and what day of the week of what BMW decides.

Mine didn't leave the building without a Full Akrapovic Evolution exhaust! Like 30 mins after it was unloaded out the crate the exhaust was installed and the pre-inspection was done with it on! The only thing they were worried about was a light coming on during those couple miles and they hooked it back up to the computer to double check everything and sent me on. LOL the two techs were fighting over space because one was installing my exhaust and the other was up and down on the lift bolting in the battery to setup the throttle position sensor which was pretty cool to watch! Its really awesome to see what all they do to setup your bike out of the box. This was 2019 and before anyone had a tune out for the K67 but I did the exact same thing with my 22 K66.

This video is great! Last weekend I got a full custom clear bra installed on my M1000RR Competition. This weekend I start my 600mi break in. Then I will get the service and start the install process you mentioned. Please do another exhaustive long form detailed fairing/tank removal, velocity stacks, IAT, ETC... I have the bt unit, stage 2, IAT, velocity stacks and will be doing the install myself. Your upcoming video will be invaluable. Also, in June, I ordered the Austin Racing titanium full exhaust so I will be in touch when I upload my initial tune. Thanks for all you do and the community support.

Is modifying the ECU to unlock restrictions put on 4000-6000 rpm is a way to void the warranty? thanks

BMW covered the cost of my first service on my 2024 M1000XR. I fully expected to pay and was shocked when my service manager told me BMW covers the cost of the first service on the M bikes. In the end there was no reason to self-perform the first service. My salesman did not mention this to me. I recommend you check with your dealership. So much nicer now the rev limiter is unlocked. I did catch Jeff stating that if you do an exhaust it has to be tuned. (In so many words) It's always been my understanding that if you mess with the ECU (Tune) kiss the warranty goodbye and all claims will be denied. When I bought my 2024 Kawasaki ZX10RR I had to sign a document acknowledging that touching the ECU voids the warranty. Good information here but spoken very carefully in the gray area, not so black and white. In the end my take is, have a good relationship with the service department. I think how the information is presented from the dealership to BMW (Or any manufacturer) makes a big difference. In the end if they do a data dump BMW will see everything as Jeff said, that everything will include the ability for them to see all ECU flashes and the like.

My 2021 xr poped its motor at 5k. I did the maintenance it never saw a dealer. Bme covered it no questions.

I think most major BMW dealerships know about, and are comfortable with the BT flash. I just had my bike in over the summer and the service manager said "you haven't done the BT flash yet???" Also, a manufacturer must prove that any modification you've done (car or bike) directly resulted in mechanical failures.

Great video answering some questions I have wondered about. But curious about the exhaust comment. Running a full catless Akrop system with your flash on my 23 MR. With 4 O2 sensors; how could you get an over lean situation and burnt valves??

The bike isn’t full time closed loop from the factory. Only small changes are made to fueling at partial throttle, not wide open throttle.

Very informative. I also live about 4 hours away for the dealership and have a small setup at home. Software update always have created issues for me 😅. One thing I wanna ask is that can I use any oil other than Advantec? Because I get Motul 300v for cheap. BMW in my area says that aftermarket oil will void my warranty.

Using anything but BMW recommended oil would leave the door open for them to point the finger at something but if your services are documented and at normal intervals, it should be fine.

As long as you document what oil you have used, and that oil meets the same Specs (read the label) no manufacturer can/will deny a claim. Using the incorrect 🎉 of oil certainly will justify a denial.

BMW said you can self-service using a GS tool and BMW parts. As long as you’re in mileage spec and notate the service / keep receipts.

I've just dropped my M1000R (totally standard) off at my local BMW Motorrad dealer, here in the UK, for it's first service. The dealer has informed me that I would void my warranty, if I had my bike remapped. I didn't ask about any other mods. 😢

If you put Arrow/ Akrapovic headers and ask to bmw to put a new ECU flash for the new pipes it avoids the warranty too ?

Bmw uses ista As the dealer software. Each module will show how many times ite been flashed updated ext. So if you flash your ecu and put it back to stock thats gonna ahow 3 flashes on the ecu. I think you cant flash more than 80 times. If your ecu is flashed 10 times and all the other modules are at 2 then its obvious. 80.

Most dealers have no idea how to access this information and even so, they have to prove the flash caused the part failure. The number is over 100 times for max flashes

No, unless the settings modified it in a way that would make the bike run super lean, rich or over rev. Bikes wouldn't even really need much of a tune if the EPA didn't mess everything up and force garbage tunes from the factory.

Dude...RUN from that dealer.....the stock system is only able to make very minute adjustments, mainly at partial throttle...it cant compensate for major changes in fuel/air...you need an aftermarket tune to do that as stock is incapable of it. Also, remember that the dealer is NOT the one that approves or disapproves a warranty claim, its Corporate BMW warranty department.

Can’t void without proof the mod caused the failure but a dealer can deny any claim and make it difficult for you to warranty things on your bike. For some that includes any exhaust upgrades.

The dealer is not gonna uodate all the modules on your bike unless there is an issue present. It can take an hour to update one bike. Multiply rhat by a few thousand bikes.

I changed my turn signals on my Triumph Bobber and when my ABS and TC lights came on 1 day ,the sevice mgr said ,I had violated my warranty .I bought my Speed Triple at another dealer because of this .

Its not up to the dealer whether something is covered by warranty....I would be referring that dealer to corporate for sure!! Warranty claims are approved or denied by corporate...teh dealer submits them to claims to be reimbursed...they have zero say in the process.....unless they refuse to submit the claim.

There's too much ambiguity with the 1st service and the mileage. My bike was done brand new, by BMW. I would hope that if it's done by a certified BMW dealership, there would be no issue with a warranty claim. I'm also curious as to why their WSBK takes the limiter off as soon as they get the bike and no one says it's dangerous.

Maybe because those motors get opened often and rigorously checked, you can’t compare that to a street bike.

An engineer will disagree with the reason behind the RPM limit set on bikes. No factory engineer of these engines have confirmed the rpm limit is in place for the breaking in and or as mentioned in the video "loosen up the engine a little bit". Very controversial topic, but most engineers who are working on performance engines tell you, the engine needs to experience "load" and the only "break in" requires is to let the piston ring seat. A piston ring will not seat without "load" being put on the engine, and it will definitely not happen with babying an engine. No offense to Jeff, but I don't think a service manager is knowledgeable or has received training to answer a technical question regarding an engines break in.

As an ex warranty analyst and service manager I have been on both sides of these types of issues. A service manager is like a politician and has to try to appease and work with both sides. In my experience with many brands BMW had been a bit tough to deal with. And as 50% German myself they rarely think they have done anything wrong. 😊

I've been informed by my local BMW dealer in the UK. If they see that I've flashed my ECU, then my warranty will be void.

@@BT_Moto Sorry, after re reading my comment, I realised that I had implied that the dealer had referred to the warranty status. In fact, my comment should have read "...... If BMW Motorrad UK see that I've flashed my ECU, then my warranty will be void". Apparently, BMW Motorrad UK will allow me to modify my M1000R's exhaust, air filter etc, but not the ECU mapping, while under warranty.

Going from BMW to Ducati is like night and day when it comes to self repair. No such thing as a gs 911 for my pikes peak. No way to add self service data. I had to let them do my 600 mile service for $400 to comply with my warranty. BTW are you Troy? Are you closer to South Bay BMW? Long Beach is quite a drive , but I know Long Beach is more friendly to ECU flashes...

Mods on this bike will ONLY void the warranty if anything that goes wrong with the bike is strictly related to the ECU only !! If something happens to the bike, mechanically in any way, is NOT related to the ECU then the warranty must kick in to be used to fix the issue !!

In my experience in the uk if you have any major problem to even a a non modded bike BMW WILL DO everything in their power to NOT help you, worse manufacture ever
