If someone can find value and meaning in a complicated watch and not scoff at the price point, is someone that thinks deeper than just the "only thing watches are for is to tell time, why should I pay thousands of dollars" mentality. They have the ability to appreciate the workmanship and meaning in a watch much like a painting.

Benjamin is passionate about watches. He is not a watch snob. He is expressing his observations on new trends in watch collecting. I don’t think he is talking about watch snobs. Quality watches can be very interesting and you can engage in amazing conversations with people about them. I can’t imagine someone being passionate about a 100 year old Apple Watch their grandfather gave them,100 years from now, but I recall seeing Benjamin in another video talking about a quality watch passed down to him. He loves that watch. If someone does buy an expensive quality watch just to show off but is not interested in it’s beauty and has no real appreciation, than I do agree with some of the negative comments.

It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not what matters is perception it’s the law of attraction, these timepieces for whatever reason attract other wearers many of which are powerful men and women in their industries. True a watch doesn’t give you value you give it value but the perception of one in business trying to close a multimillion dollar deal wearing a cheap watch doesn’t add up the first impression benefit gained by what’s on your wrist for better or worse rises and falls with what’s on your wrist. It’s the same with women who get a certain impression of a man based on the shoes on his feet.

You know you're in trouble when you say "... and you become part of the watch." After you get past practical and accurate (about $125 tops.), you're just mounting the people around you in a social sense. It says only one thing 'I'm better than you'. What part of the survival instinct is satisfied by walking around with 5,10 or $20,000 wrapped around your wrist?
@TeeroyHammermill

Third : we enjoy the brand the watch , for what it is and the gentle man was trying to make a complement ( I thank him for it ) . Fourth : although I enjoy the whole horolgy journey , I watch review videos of Bovet watches , still I think that in some sense automatic watches are kind of an absolute idea , they're old tech ! And you can't deny that it's NOT all quality you're paying for . A lot of it is just marketing strategies .

Just because a watch costs a ton of money doesn't mean it's better quality. This is the problem with watch snobs. Rolex, AP and Patek are the only good watches to buy to them. There are so many other watch companies that have more history and class than those 3. Having a 10k dollar watch doesn't mean it's better. To people who are pretentious and self absorbed it does. So many comments putting down Timex and Seiko but they know nothing about either company. They know nothing about any companies other than Rolex, Patek and AP. It's sad.

Then your honest opinion is wrong. In sociology there are class relations. The higher the class the finer things they own. From properties to personal wears to lifestyle as to the types of food they consume or the style of the music they listen to. We are talking about economic capital and cultural capital here. For example, people in lower position of the social class tend to see "eating" as a way to fill your stomach and they are very happy to have a $5 dollar filler meal on the one hand. People with higher social class see "eating" as one of their cultural capital on the other, those people turning eating and cooking into a form of fine art and often spend 3 digits of $$$ on just one meal. That was for food but for watch it is a very similar story, a $10 market watch and a $20000 Patek are targeting at different social classes. If you want to get yourself into that top end of the social class, unfortunately, you have to have all economic capital, social capital and cultural capital developed and watch plays a very important role in terms of cultural capital, therefore, a $20000 Patek or equivalent is a necessary item.

That's kind of funny, since most dumb people won't be able to afford a very expensive watch it's most likely the smart people who can. Now, not all people who are smart get rich and not all dumb people are poor, but it's true more often than not.

Hodinkee is one of the most respected publications in the watch world. Not to mention their youtube videos have introduced watches to a lot of new people. The guy has even had jean claude biver (CEO of LVMH, Hublot, Tag, Blancpain, Omega) bring his personal watch collection for a video and interview. Dude covers it all from the average watch all the way up to to multi million dollar vintage collections.

The Japanese one collapsed decades ago. Europe collapsed even earlier. Point is... it has nothing to do with the watch.

A fine luxury watch is jewelry, it’s definitely not just a watch.

An expensive mechanical watch is like a classic car; you pay more for less performance than a modern car. A Rolex uses the same technology for the movement as a $50 Vostok. An Apple watch does much more than a Patek Calatrava and costs thousands less. Expensive watches are the male equivalent of expensive jewelry; you hope people see it and are duly impressed. Usually these days they are not.

kokakoliah Actually I prefer keeping track of time on watches rather than smartphones. I hate pulling out my big fat smartphone frequently to check the time. Watches have a purpose, telling time. That’s all I need.
