2 years ago when i came back i started with a proZ responsive. i started with that because it reminded me of what i had started with back in middle school, the yomega fireball. when i moved into unresponsive play i went with the gfunk (mistake). i then found somebody selling the barracuda (original), prototype genesys, nautilus code 2, and summit. I love the genesys, but it was the barracuda that really thought me how to play. since then i moved on to the orbis, and more recently the rave. I still play with my other throws from time to time, but if it wasn't because i learned what to look for, for myself, i wouldn't pick the throw i have today. so i will agree with other commenters start responsive, then go unresponsive. and honestly i would invest in 4 different throws to see what you will like best. also learn about bearings, those center trac bearings are off the chain! but other players swear by flats.

As a beginner playing with yo yo's most of my life if I followed your advice i would have given up long time ago i feel the best for a beginner is to know that the yo yo will come back so to start with a unresponsive Yo yo i would have chucked it and given up! Growing up none of the information about yo yo's was available as it was today, im 53 still love yoing! Now Im on Tutorial yo yo tricks starting as a beginner and following the information as carefully as i can to learn and enjoy something i always wanted to improve! Just my experience as a yoer! Love watching your videos though you do teach me alot about my hobby!

My first was the Duncan Freehand Zero, then modded it with weight rings, and silicon pads and upgraded bearing. From there, I got a HSpin Good and Evil 2 Poison. The rest is history. I am thinking about getting a C3 Fingerspin.

I would not redo my purchase with the Sage pro pack. Starting with a responsive yoyo helped me a lot with learning to throw straight and avoid tilt. It got me a long way with the beginner tricks and then I upgraded it and bought myself a replay pro. Today I got an Edge for my competitive throw and 15 other solid yoyo's. But the sage and replay still gets good playtime to this day

Had I seen this 11 months ago, I would have had myself a Replay Pro instead of a Whip (stocked with a center track bearing) as my first throw. That's how influential you are to me Brandon. Haha! But personally, I deem the Whip also a good starting yoyo, and it's actually what I bought for Nicole who was hooked when she threw my Whip the first time. It's coming on Monday with my Horizon (I listen to you, it's a 45-dollar metal), and I can't wait to hand it down to her. Since it won't come stocked with a center track bearing, I'll just give her the bearing of my broken Northstar (and a little secret, I'll put it in a proposal ring box). I'll also make sure she gets some of my white Kitty Strings :) did I forget something? Btw, love your content as always!

I've had so many debates on this topic and the only two throws most people can agree are still undisputed from a "price to performance" ratio is the *Horizon* & *Shutter*. They're both inexpensive, have proven themselves in competition, and they're ubiquitous. Which is important because as you improve, you WILL ding your throws a lot. As a huge YYR fan with lots of expensive Bimetal and Titanium throws in my collection, the last thing you want is to ding a $300+ throw. Trust me! Plus, if you do become a serious player and want a set for competing, they are still the best options on the market.

Hey, Brandon! thanks for this video; Right now I'm starting to immerse myself in this yoyo world (I have 30's = D you think I'm too old for this yoyo thing?); I think it is very appropriate your explanation regarding these as it clears the doubts about a world of options to choose, makes it very clear so thank you !. Also the rest of your videos is great, very explicit and also fun, and of course amazing style of yoyoing; A lot to learn but very excited! I'll see you around here ... By the way about those who think that a responsive yo-yo is necessary to begin with, I have no experience in this matter of yoyo, in fact I am a guitar player, but I can see a parallelism when choosing a learning tool; The finer the instrument you have at the beginning, you will learn faster, cleaner, and better the techniques needed, you do not need an instrument that will in fact make it difficult for the aspirant to appreciate the art in question, and discourage him in his learning. So I completely agree with Brandon's recommendation as pro.

When I was a kid, my first yoyo was a Yomega.. I even remembered getting one when you pay a bit extra at McDonald's at the time they'd sell yomegas on the side. Years and years later, I learn about unresponsive play. I skipped all that plastic shit and went straight to the shutter and a one drop H. Was it worth it? Yes! I would recommend getting a straight up metal yoyo. I tried out a yoyofficer kilter 3 and it was amazing for under 30 bucks. To me, a beginner should go for that... plastic can only do so much. I understand you want to learn the basics but think of how much you will be spending on a plastic, then a cheap metal, and then finally to a 25-50 dollar yoyo when you can just buy a 30 dollar one and stick with it for a good while. You may ding it once or twice by accident, but you'll learn to love the hobby with something that doesn't have training wheels.

My situation is a little bit more complicated than just being a "beginner". Back in middle school/early high school, I used to be into yoyo. Late 90s. Maybe they existed, but nobody I knew back then had what is now called an unresponsive yoyo. I never even heard about them until just recently, and apparently it became a thing in the early 2000's. Back then I knew just about all the basic level tricks I could do with a yoyo that would sleep at max for ~20-30 seconds. I decided to buy a Canon (over the Shutter cause I thought it looked a bit cooler tbh). Arrives tomorrow. The extra cost of a metal yoyo (lol they only cost $45) was a non-issue. Should be interesting because I never had to do binds before, but it really doesnt look hard.

My recommendation for absolute beginner unresponsive, as someone who's not very far past beginner, is the Skyva. It's a yoyo that kinda grows with you. Has all those same benefits of the replay pro, but also opens up fingerspins. From personal experience, despite having several other, 'better', throws (OD Terrarian, YYF 9Dragons, MYY Stealth...), I still only ever seem to pull out the Skyva to play with.

Personally, i think there is an inherit flaw within these options. Most people, when they start, pick off of budget over performability. Hell, I did that for a while, starting on a replay. The problem here is that the replay is not designed for the beginner player, but for an intermediate to pro players, for a budget price. It is quite heavy for the market, and is a solid throw, but beginners need a more average throw, as the don't know what kind of yoyos they want yet. They also need a responsive yoyo first, as it is much more comfortable as a throw. So, while the replay and n12 are good throws that i recommend as a buget option, they are not good choices for beginners. I think that the best choice is the yotricks sage, as it is quite average in all respects, fits comfortably in the hand, and comes responsive which is easily fixed, and yotricks offers a pro pack that comes with all the essentials for a player, such as string and lube, as well as an unresponsive bearing so new players are much more comfortable transitioning into unresponsive. It would also be a good transition to the canon, and that option would let new players discover which of the main styles they enjoy most.

This is essentially where I started. I had thrown yoyos before (Yomega brain as well as an unresponsive yoyo that remains unknown to me). The first yoyo I bought was the Yotricks sage pro pack so I could start on responsive and eventually move on to unresponsive play. I find this to be one of the best beginner options because it allows a new player to start on a responsive yoyo and get their basic skills down. Then they can move onto unresponsive play when they feel they are ready/when their skill naturally progresses to that point. Then the option to switch responsiveness is there and you don't have to buy an new yoyo or new parts (helping the budget department)

I agree with you. As a player that loves looping tricks and got into 2A because... hello hello I started off with a responsive yoyo. Unless you really want to be cheap and get the replay pro so that you can learn everything but what about tricks like the forward pass, walk the dog basic regens (for responsive), if I didn't learn these tricks I would be missing some essential tricks... Love your content Brandon

I'm an old yoyo player, I had a playmaxx bumble bee gt, playmaxx fireball and I was planning to get a playmaxx cold fusion which would have been my first metal yoyo. If you had to recommend a yoyo for a person like me would it be worth it to get a new a bearing, string and cork brake pads for about 20 bucks and try to revitalize my old yoyo or should I drop the nostalgia and go for a magic yoyo from amazon for 9 bucks and get a bearing upgrade and possibly better silicon pads?
@thebrandonvu

Get the new throw. Yoyos these days, especially by Magic Yoyo are just cheaper and better all round. It would be cool to revitalize your Yoyo for sentimental value but for performance it's not practical from an economic or performance perspective.

In my opinion is that you should buy any good plastic yoyo that is unresponsive and get a responsive bearing change the bearings so that you can practice tricks but will still be responsive then as you progress you would change the bearing back to unresponsive yoyo it’s cheaper that way since all you need to do is change the bearing

This was the first video I watched on the topic. I went on to learn about what an "unresponsive" yoyo is. As an absolute beginner (who admittedly doesn't actually know anything), it seems crazy to me that someone's first yoyo would be an unresponsive one. Total noobs are going to have a hard time learning anything if they have to learn how to bind in order to even get it back in hand, right? Am I not understanding something?

He's not saying get all these at once and move up when your ready... Get a replay pro or Wedge at first and then when your ready move up to your next step.

My problem is that I've never really been good at yoyoing (in my opinion compared to players like Brandon here) Yeah, I can do about 75% of the tricks on Yoyoexpert, and I know like one or two of the "master tricks". But, my problem is one, I am in like a 12x12 room with not much yoyoing room (not a big problem but it is a bother) And I have problems remembering a lot of the tricks. Like White Budda, I used to be able to do that trick like it was nothing. I'd probably have to rewatch that video again. Shitty part is, I'm 20, and I picked up yoyoing when I was 7. I just never really kept with it throughout my life. From like, 7-14 I was at it. And from about 15-18 I kinda quit yoyoing until I got a job and could actually afford yoyoing again. Also, budget was a problem for me. Never got much money from my parents to buy any yoyo's or string really.
