In Australia we got the original UK version of The Descent released here as well. The DVD version I have also has the original ending. And I love it! I remember talking to some American friends around the time who said things like: at least The Descent ended on a happy note. I was very confused. Until we finally realised we'd seen different versions of the same movie. But the UK version feels much more realistic.

The fact that The Evil Dead series had a television show following the modern day Ash just shows how much better the S-Mart ending was and how it fit so much better than the bleak ending.

The weird thing is the 3rd and final series of Ash vs Evil Dead finishes with Ash being woken up in future. It's like they always had this idea of having Ash fight the Deadites in the future but havnt ever managed to do it.

It was a reference to Arthurian legend. Arthur is known as "the once and future king" as, according to the legend, he isn't dead and is only sleeping until his time comes again. Hail to the once and future king, baby.

It's not just the Highlander movie. The episodes of the television series had extra footage not broadcast in the US, though that was because of US television having more commercials rather than actual content.

Leon: The American version cut ALL of Matildas training in the US version. When she says she can clean at the end, originally we all scoffed, seeing that she never practiced, and it only appeared like a little girl was pretending to be cleaner. This cut torpedoes the sequel, that got retooled into Columbiana.

You know, I never thought of the original "Army of darkness" ending as bleak. I thought of it as sequel-baiting for "Evil dead 4", since "Evil dead 2" had ended on such a similar note that ended up paving the way for "Army of darkness".

Very true also the final series of Ash Vs Evil Dead ends with Ash waking up in the future so Raime probably always planned to have Ash fight the Deadites in the future.

We do have the director's cut over in the U.S. though. Any version of the movie you pick up will be that version instead of the "love conquers all" theatrical cut, UNLESS if you picked up the Criterion which has both.

I love that the original ending of Army of Darkness is a reference to Arthurian legend. The people he meets in the past are Arthur and Merlin, so the connection is established early. According to the legends, Arthur is only sleeping, not dead, and will wake back up when he's needed again. In this ending, Ash takes the place of Arthur. Hail to the once and future king, baby

No, no we cannot, or perhaps can't is the wrong word and don't want to is more appropriate. Consider us like the characters in Brazil and the Descent, trying to live in a mental happy place while the real world is actually a horrifying nightmare around you -- or at least that's my reason for avoiding sad endings.

I saw the theatrical version first run back when it came out. When it hit syndication on TV just a couple years later, it was the “Love Conquers All” ending, which I might still have on videotape somewhere around here. Basically it just ends with Sam living his idyllic trailer home existence. The nightmarish stuff during the escape was trimmed down quite a bit, but not completely gone.

Your version of what happened with Brazil is inacurate...Terry Gilliam has said in more than one interview ...that what happened is... Terry stole the original film prints from the Universal Studios warehouse and threatened to burn them with gasoline if the studio did not agree to his cut of the movie...so... It wasn't that Universal had no choice because Terry played it for film students. It was.. Universal had no choice because Teryy was holding a lighter over the reels of film with a can of gasoline in his other hand. Just to make things clear on how that story went.

I'm mostly sick of studios removing or modifying content that was in movies years and years ago, but now those scenes aren't "PC" for today. The past wasn't perfect. Just leave it alone so we can be reminded of what the past was like, and do better going forward.

Technically in Brazil he isn't actually lobotomized. His mind breaks before they do anything but work on his fingernails. If you look you'll see they didn't get to that point in the torture. They even talk about it in the film. You might want to watch the film again. Even though he "escapes" due to having a complete breakdown, the odds are he'll be murdered.

@@sanginor For me, at least, it really depends on how my life is going at the time. If things look pretty bleak in my own life, I want the escape of a happy ending. If I am a bit depressed when I see a movie, a downbeat ending can affect me negatively for weeks afterward.

I rarely kick up a fuss about others opinions but no, the US cut of The Descent is vastly inferior to the superb gut punch of an original ending. Granted, I enjoy a “final girl/boy/insert gender identity here” face off and gloriously gory and triumphant offing of the films titular baddie but the simple fact remains that sometimes there is no happy ending and no amount of editing or cheap jump scares can hide the fact that everyone is well and truly fucked. Take The Wicker Man, coincidentally my favourite film of all time (Yes, the original first anyone foolish enough to ask!) Can you truly imagine a version in which Howie triumphantly overpowers Lord Summerisle before licking him in th3 titular wicker man and laughing uproariously as he burns to a crispy critter? Yes, maybe you can but it’s not as powerful, memorable or iconic as the original … … so yeah, we might like our horror bleak sometimes but if you want a truly bleak horror show then just watch the daily news. Sadly we, like them, can’t always triumph over evil. Sweet dreams, everyone 🥴 x

The directors, for the most part,* do not have the ability to make and release a movie on their own. "Their" movie is being funded by the studio. In other words the director did not "make" the movie because they did not pay for it to be made. Like it or not, the film industry must make enough money to stay in business. That is the reason that studios have test audiences see the film before the final cut and rewrite if the reaction is not strong enough. The studios need to at least break even on expenses. If a studio thinks that a movie will lose them money, they won't show it in theaters, minimize their losses by selling it in the streaming market (previously, Direct To Video), or even take it as a tax writeoff. It is important to know that what the director and a select audience may see as the best version of a film may not appeal to a large enough audience to pay the bills. Annoying as it may be, a downbeat, "challenging", or ambiguous ending tends to appeal to a smaller audience. In some respects, the most satisfying result can be that a movie does well enough that multiple endings become available for those who wish to see them. *George Lucas has said that he sold Star Wars to Disney to get the funds to allow him to just do what he wanted and not endanger the jobs of his many employees. He was keenly aware that most of his personal projects would lose money.
