The father was right to be so protective. Look at all the child entertainers that have made it & then ended up to be taken advantage of or have substance abuse. I give the father a standing ovation for protecting the children.

Yea Yea, but he was also an idiot sometimes! He didn't do half of what Joe did for the Jacksons, but yet he was spending his KIDS money!! Joe was spending his kids money too, but I think Joe deserved to because he taught them how to perform ! Five Star daddy did nothing but dictate👎

Buster was right to watch over their career. He was the perfect person to do so, due to his past experience being in the industry. They, those other people, were just talking about their father like that only because they couldn't get their hands on his children to influence/exploit them like they wanted to... so they could start some controversy. I LOVED Five Star back then. The whole family is beautiful.

From my information when Buster sold the record company over to RCA, he put a clause in where they couldn't have the songs covered by other people for a set period of years. That is why you never hardly hear any covers of their material, Buster was trying to protect the brand until the end.

I think that's just a cheap excuse. Remove the obsession and preoccupation with race/colour . What would change? You can only go so far with the UK industry. (it's very limited) Even white stars have to move to America to get more success.

@@furrymonkeything Hard truths are better to deal with than soft lies. Race is a factor, no matter how much you want to ignore it.
@furrymonkeything

@saj8 I disagree. It's just your perspective on life and what you are now trying to portray. The only harshness is the music industry itself. They ride your back and try to get as much money out of you as possible. Considering they weren't chart toppers, they were lucky to get that far. I maintain that bringing race into everything is just whiny and lazy. Bob Marley was from Jamaica just as five star's father was. Bob did not get the respect and fame we know him for, till he came to England and was taken on by an English producer. It was then Jamaicans recognised him. The rest is history. As a third generation black immigrant, my view is valid on the matter.
@saj8
@saj8 9 ай бұрын
@@furrymonkeything And I see that you are still ignoring the main issue. Color has been a main issue since day one and it has been a major factor in the industry since day one. Doesn't matter if you're an immigrant or a native. This issue isn't going away, no matter how badly you want it to.

Although I was a kid, I remember all of the controversy about their house and cars, etc. and even back then, I thought, 'why is the media so bothered about how they are living?' Now, that I am older and have been through racism on the job, etc. I totally see that there was definitely racism behind the fall of this group. When the member said that she heard an Executive from Epic say that after seeing their home and cars, 'they have too much for a black family and it's not right', I totally believe her! That's when they went into doing dirty behind the scenes schemes to shoot this family's fame and riches down. Again, I've had something similar happen to me on the job. There are some sick white people who really believe that we should never have what they have or feel entitled to. Anyways, I really enjoyed this. Going to definitely watch part 2.

One of the things I liked about Five Star is how they released as many singles from an album as possible. It was a great way of presenting their work. The first album, "Luxury Of Life", had no less than 7 singles out of the 10 songs. I thought it was great, particularly because the singles came with great extended mixes of the tracks. That put, one of my favourite Five Star songs, "Winning", is one of the songs from the album that weren't released as singles. Too bad, but at least the extended version of it was added to the seventh release ("System Addict").

thanks for sharing this. although five star were before my time, I recognise how important they were. they broke barriers. their music sounded more like pop/rock than r&b to me. they seemed like such a tight unit and family, with each member playing a crucial role. the British press were obviously threatened and jealous of this, and tried to tear them apart. they label you ‘weird’ for not wanting to do drugs, when they were really just raised to have self respect. it would be great if you could cover musical youth at some point.

They were crucified in the BRITISH press , because they were successful , it was the same thing over and over in the 80s and 90s there would be kids that would be pushed out and rang dry IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY for as much as possible , think BROS AND TERRENCE TRENT DARBY , and so many more acts /groups that then if the British press though they were getting cocky or would not follow the party line and do as they were told they would be dragged down in the public eye . They would label they as spoiled or flaunting their money or cocky, and they would tear them down for having the audacity of not kissing the feet of the press , then like now the press control what they want the public to see and at the time there was no alternative . And to have a black group in the 80s being successful was great for 5 mins, but a black group who were in control of their careers, NOT GOING TO BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN FOR VERY LONG .

IMO, their mansion, their cars and their spending made them a target of the media like they did with Bros - I felt they should waited for a few hit albums in to do that - Jay Kay of Jamiroquai once said he was offered a Ferrari F50 when it came out but couldn’t afford it then (he was only 2 albums in) but managed a Lamborghini Diablo after his 3rd album. He had his 5th album when he had his Ferrari Enzo

5 Star was a group that broke barriers. Especially a group of color doing that time. They were a family like the Jacksons. Thank the Lord for their father who oversaw them. And British tabloids were harsh on them. Never mind that they were very young and teenagers And they are like that today. But because of their father this is why they never got in trouble. He knew how mean the music world could be. And that is another thing! They think Black father do not take care of their children. Here 8s proof that they do. I like this video! I listened to this Five Star album on a set of Wharfedale XP2 GLendales, years ago in the early 90s. It was a really enjoyable experience on the simplest system as Money was not in great numbers. I still remember the Experience and await to sit down in busier times to relive some of my Early Experiences.

They released a lot of singles. Most I can’t remember. The few big hits were great. Quality production work. But they were just a Jackson 5 copy without a Michael. Pop groups back then had a short lifespan because new styles were coming every couple of years. By 87/88 acid house was changing dance music and groups like these were over. Today it feels like pop music hasn’t changed much at all for ages. I still have a soft spot for them. And I fancied the girls when I was 14. Happy days.
