Kimball was one of the biggest names in piano manufacturing in the 19th and 20th centuries. From its humble beginnings in 1857 as W.W. Kimball and Company, the brand name Kimball has certainly gone through some interesting events over the decades. Kimball is an interesting American piano maker with a unique history. Kimball Pianos are some of the best-known pianos in the world, and unfortunately, they are no longer produced as of 1996. As a longtime employee of the old Kimball Piano plant, at our peak We produced 200 uprights a day And 12 Grands a day. West Baden/French Lick In. The absolute pride all of us felt when our Pianos were on a game show or in a movie. God Bless ya!.

happy tobalive, I grew up on a medium-height Kimball upright my mom bought new in 1964, Scandinavian style walnut, about 50 inches tall, not quite as short as a spinet. The family has taken pretty good care of it. I remember it had a very responsive action. The two bozos in the video led us to believe that Kimball did not manufacture their own uprights, but farmed them out to Wurlitzer or somebody else. It seems you might dispute that assertion. I'd love to get more details from you.

@@DrChaad I dont know how you could have made that assumption because there is no evidence to suggest they led anybody to beleive that Kimball never made their own uprights. In fact, they had got on the subject of spinet pianos and had mentioned how Kimball never made a spinet. They were speaking about how the spinet piano is what helped the Wurlitzer piano company to take off. These "two bozos" are very knowledgeable and have a great respect for Kimball.

I know that one of the pianos that Jo Ann Castle played on the Lawrence Welk show was an old upright Kimball...albeit...it got repainted on a regular basis to fit her appearances. But the sound board label was a Kimball.

@@johnsheetz6639 The days of Dan W. Bob B. Elvis N. Donnie H. And the horrible floods that happened Too many times, We used to park by the Jubil bar and get transported by Semi, Backhoe, or lifted 4x4. 🤔 the things we do for our employer.

Thanks for the interesting comments about Kimball pianos. I have a Kimball grand that was made in 1936 and it still sounds great. We have also purchased a Kimball grand piano for our church.

We had Kimball piano’s in my church growing up in the 90’s and early 2000’s. I had no idea it’s the same company my employer now buys Kimball furniture from.

I have a 6’7 Viennese Classic. I loooove it. I’ve had it for 29 years and sound is unbelievable. The best piano ever ! Thanks for the review.

I had an upright Kimble made of peacan and it had a walnut sound board.

Did you guys know Kimball made a 9’ Concert Grand? I have one… and it is magnificent! It was built in 1927, and I even found an original Kimball catalog from that year with it listed in it. I wish I could share pics here. It is truly a remarkable sounding instrument!

I have a 1983 model 6760 (6'7") Viennese Classic in the polished ebony finish. Pretty, powerful bass and a very nice treble.

It's sad, I had a few family members that worked at the factory in French lick/ west baden. Basically the biggest employer in the small town besides the hotel. If you guys ever get a chance to visit there do it! Nice golf course, the hotel, the old train. Just a really nice town. I want to go back just for the lightning bugs in the summer and see my family.

I was born in 1996. I moved around a lot. I’ve lived in cities, suburbs and small towns. I’ve lived in the North and the South. I’ve gotten visited by missionaries and canvassers, but never a door-to-door salesman. Nobody knocks on your door to sell you anything valuable anymore, just religion or politics!

Count yourself lucky that a kirby salesman has not stopped by to "clean a room" for you. Just had one 4 years ago.

Informative and interesting, but… How can you sell pianos, and _still_ not know how to pronounce Bösendorfer ?

You are so dang critical. You have three interactions on this video and they all criticize the store, Ted, and Patrick to some degree. People are not perfect and you can't expect them to be. You have even went after them for "mistakes" they haven't even made. Pay better attention to the video and stop being quick to judge and lighten up a little.

The piano he demonstrated is most definitely an out-of-tune Baby Grand. I can't tell from his comments whether this is one of the Bösendorfer-era (1966-1992) "Viennese Classic" grands, but even with old, oxidized strings in need of tuning, it still has the sweet, colorful sound of a Bösendorfer. These morons at the piano store should be jailed for not taking better care of this instrument. At least keep it tuned, for Pete's sake.

@@DrChaad These "morons" at the piano store can't help that they get used pianos from people that haven't loved them properly. Stores have different priorities and they don't alway get a chance to tune then right away, especially with a store as large as Alamo Music Center. Its not like they just bought the piano new and never took care of it, it is clearly a very used piano.

This video is literally called "What happened to Kimball pianos?" ...Why would it have anything to do with Bösendorfer, with the exception of minor references?

There was a period of time when Kimball OWNED Bosendorfer! During that time they created a special line of grand pianos that copied the Bosendorfer plate design. These were occasionally referred to as “Kimballdorfer” pianos. They were actually a good product. This was their dying gasp at trying to compete with Steinway.
