Sailing Uma

Күн бұрын

After we had a very productive week in Mole St Nicolas, we sailed over to Labadee, and have... a completely opposite experience inolving drinking, power boats, castles and a lot of screaming.
If you enjoyed this episode, please give this video a thumbs up, it helps us out a bunch :)
A special shout out to MalfiniPhotography for the amazing drone shots.

Like anywhere in the world, there are safer places and less safe places. But I can assure you, all the places we visited and showed in our videos are safe for anyone to visit. The majority of the people in Haiti understand the importance of reputation and how much damage one bad apple can cause. The locals we met were very friendly and helpful. Yes, it helps that Kika can speak Creole, but many of the people we met could speak enough english to get by. Cerole is also a very simple language to pick up and use and a smile and a handshake are understood in any language. Lets just say we felt safer in Haiti than in Miami.

When you have a swell across the wind, use a piece of line from 2-3 boat lengths down the anchor rode to a stern cleat. No help needed, just a swim and a length of line. It also means less work stewing and retrieving a second hook. Marc

Excellent videos and editing with fabulous choice of music. It's such an inspiration to see what you guys have done from the start with the boat, the E motor, and how detailed and instructional the projects & repairs were on the boat, all the sailing episodes like the Hurricane prep, storm footage Dan did in Petite Guave. I have always pondered how to locate a Hurricane hole, go there & prepare the boat and ride out a big storm successfully. I'm also very impressed and inspired to learn to create videos & edit them w/ multiple shots, narrative & music etc. I loved the simple song "Love for the Ocean" (Martin Hall) you used with the day sail & Kika on Jimmy's boat in Boukan Guinguette. I've been learning from observing your videos about all the various shots you do with stationary cam (Go Pro?) combined with the action clips and narrative. Your videos are first class and seem mostly done with very minimal equipment. Bravo. I would also love to crew with you guys someday to learn more about all your secrets but I'm sure I am not the only one. DA

you don't need a stern anchor when you have swell from the side - you just need a swell bridle: tie a line from the stern to the rode and let it out until you're facing the desired direction - just look up "swell bridle" here on youtube, I'm pretty sure I've watched a short tutorial on it at some point :)
@SailingUma

Yes. We actually prefer to use that method, but the wind there shifted quite a bit and died off 2-3 times a day, making a bridal a pain in the but to control.

FYI, in the future, use a midshipman hitch and tie a secondary line (old sheet or halyard) to your anchor line out a ways (30 or so feet). you can use the second line and adjust the length and cleat it off to your stern cleat to turn your boat off the wind and into the swell.
@rynflynn
@rynflynn 7 жыл бұрын
just remember that if you use this method, the force on the anchor will increase since the wind will be more on your beam, so increase your ratio to at least 8-1 if you normally use 6-1.

:-) I love horseback riding. I miss it. I used to compete all the time. Western pleasure was what I used to do. I wanna get back into English writing because I have ridden English ones. I really want to learn how to sail but I don’t have enough money for sailing lessons at the moment. I’m visually impaired so I’m really excited to be able to get out there and actually be on the water and save up for equipment and stuff.

Regarding your rocky anchorage. I saw but yet to try a technique where a rope can be tied off to the anchor chain 15 to 20 feet in front of your bow. Then lead the rope astern to your winch and winch it tight bringing your bow into the waves for a nice ride. If it works to is easier than setting another anchor and done from the comfort, or should I say not so comfort of your boat . Give it a go and let me know... Herb S/V HullaBaloo.
@philsmith7398

Herb Bradley . Or set a kedge anchor from the stern at right angles and haul in until the bow is facing the waves. I've used it a few times okay.

Yes. we actually prefer that technique. But where there is no wind/light wind/ or varying wind it doesn't work well. This close to the mountains the wind shifts at least twice a day and usually dies for half the day, making an anchor bridal tricky to set and maintain.
