Kaleb, as a neighborhood involved St. Louis citizen I hope I can help. Your Alderman and NIS Neighborhood Improvement Specialist should be able to advocate for you with the city and Ameren. If you haven't already, currying a relationship with your city officials can be beneficial. Leveraging the fact that you have thousands of eyes watching and supporting you should help as well, don't be shy about it. Be assertive.

This is an excellent comment. To get things done you have to become a problem. You can be a really, really big problem because you put things on YT and can make the City look really bad. There's also a health problem with sewage backups you can use.

That piece of broken china is called transferware and the pattern is a common one used in restaurants in the 1900's through the 1920's (although I think this pattern was revived in the 1950's also). It was manufactured by the Syracuse China Company and the pattern is "St. Elmo." It's very affordable, so you could easily build a set if you wanted to.

I think it would be highly unlikely for this to be the china that the family dined on, but you truly never know. Could have been the china they used for family meals, reserving better china for guests (which was still a common thing to do at that time). Though, I think more likely is what you all have suggested, it being from some other source. A restaurant, etc. That somehow got into the cistern.

I live in South St Louis, and my sewer line had to be replaced due to being collapsed. Whatever is on the City's side they will pay for. There is a list of approved contractors who will do the excavation for the City (that part they contract out). I hired the same contractor to dig out my portion of the front yard. This guy also replaced main lines, and he replaced the main line with new pipe. There's no point in putting more $$ into other things until the sewer lateral is addressed.

I agree, the priority is plumbing not the roof, because he's living in it. It's just a "double whammy", but this too shall pass. Yes, the city has to pay their part, it's not all Kaleb's expenses, thankfully.

@@ritatharp5238 The contractor who the City sent to do the excavation was already on site, so he was able to immediately proceed with digging out the portion that was my responsibility. My front yard is on a steep slope and the excavator could not go up the sharp incline. Therefore it was a 3 man job digging from my property line until the sewer line met the house. Cost a bit more due to it being all done by hand and wheel barrows etc. This was in 2011 and I remember it being $3800 for the entire thing. Since Kaleb's yard is flat, hopefully it will not require a lot of hand digging.

@@ritatharp5238 I disagree, seeing as Caleb is not living in the house, sewers can simply be not used. Don’t get discouraged, Kaleb! Where there’s a will, there’s a way! I have no doubt that you’ll figure out a way to get this issue resolved. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to talk to the city workers where you live and show them what’s up and get their input on how to proceed- maybe that pole shouldn’t have been put there in the first place, and it will be on the electric company’s head to pay for it to be moved elsewhere. Take a deep breath, say a prayer, and all will be right in the end- you got this! We (your viewers) have faith in you! You will triumph and succeed!😊👍

Yes any damage on the city side the city pays for. The power company should be responsible for the pole removal as they should have gone to the city first before installing the pole. My new sewer line was completed yesterday. My cost 18,000. The city took responsibility for 8,000.00. The city and the inspection was quick. First of all, as someone from Germany I'm not entirely aware of how things are in America. But in my country we have these things called "Denkmal" which are basically properties with historic value. Should St. Louis have something like and you house is listed as such it might make things regarding the sewer way easier. The backing up water is damaging the historic value of your house and has to be fixed. Even if it's not listed as a property as such there might be an organization that can help you. In Germany that would be the "Denkmalpflege", but unfortunately I don't know how it might be called in the US. And never let your head down!

Possibly check with the city on just how far you can "re-align" your sewer lateral before it's considered a "new" line and not a "repaired" line. You might get lucky and be able to "dog-leg" around the pole without getting the power company "overly" involved. I know major home repairs can be overwhelming at times. Especially when they hit you 2 at a time. I'm pretty sure your inner 8 year old would tell you "We can get through this. Lets not give up now!" MY outer 64 year old is saying "You can get through this Kaleb. Don't give up now. You'll find a way".😊

It's not uncommon to ask contractors if they can help you out on the bill, or even to offer to do tradework(labor for labor, internet advertising, filming a promotional video for their website/social media, etc). Most honest tradesman want to see you succeed and will help if simply asked. In the construction world, taking time for the little guy struggling can be a big word of mouth pay out because they will be the most grateful customer. A happy customer is a life long customer.

I had a similar issue to your sewer lateral and my advice is be the thorn in the cities side. Call the necessary offices, if you can go to the offices with pictures, remind them it is their job to fix it if you have too. And do the same with the electric company. I always tell people you are your best advocate, you know what you need, you just need other people to do their job.

Kaleb, don't panic. Deep repairs to any house are going to involve plumbing and electrical, especially to a house that age. Typically, this is where you end up spending the most money, BUT it is a NECESSARY expense. You have received some excellent advice below, and if I may add my two cents, the delay required to install the new main sewer line will be worth the money invested. Your concern is new pipe from the house to the street. The electrical pole is on city property and the city header is the same. Don't worry about anything else but your side of the fence, and meeting code. The mansard will be delayed, but not by much. Keep going. It's worth it.

Oh jeez. When my family had house in south StL county, we had a rainwater, and in that day, sewer entrance at the end of our driveway on the street, in the easement. Unfortunately there was a tree planted directly over the exit pipe from the house to the street, and roots invaded the pipe. The roots invaded so far in and down the pipe it ended up under the floor of our attached garage with bedrooms above. My mother had to refinance our house to have the tree taken down, the garage floor jackhammered up, and all that dug down to find way deep find just how broken the system was, leaking raw sewage into our yard but deep enough to not be stepping in poo. So, let's look at finding preservation grants for at least the sewer system, and find yourself a city fighting restoration/preservation lawyer to get all the permit witches to sign off on stuff, and point out that the power company built directly over a sewer line which was EFFING STUPID and irresponsible. It seems to me you house may not be the only house with the same issue, and your neighborhood association may be a huge resource.

@1:07 Oh yeah, that looks familiar. A house that I used to own, we were putting on an addition and found old bricks, 1920'sand 1930's car parts and other assorted debris buried under the ground. The house was built in 1934 and it was common in those days to dump pretty much whatever in the fill to raise the land up so the house was even with the street. The land was a farm and they filled it in to make it level for a bunch of new houses and streets.

It's called a "privy", it's an outhouse before indoor plumbing..they were built with bricks in a round shape and people living there would throw trash from the house in it, very common in those days!

I’m sorry you have had more struggles. Stay positive and count your blessings. You have a beautiful and soon to be even more beautiful home! You also have a platform that reaches many people willing to help, not many have that. This year has been rough for me and I’m sure others as well but we enjoy seeing you face those trials with the strength we first admired you for and the seemingly endless talent you have for making something out of nothing. You can do this Kaleb, stay strong!

I hope one day multiple trucks and crews showed up and helped you finish this not a project but a labor of love with all the supplies, plus some, you need all for free. But there's nothing like doing it yourself then sitting back after completion admiring the job well done.

Please do not lose heart. I worked in design for major commercial devlopments with both renovations and new develoments in Hawai`i where dealing with the building department is absolutely INSANE. Professional archtiects and designers hired walkers to get our plans and permits through the building department and deal with the city and county ofices. The cost was negligible and saved countless hours of hassle. Please check around and see if such individuals are avaialbe in St Lous. These individuals are worth their weight in gold as they know their way around the burocratic BS and have build the relationships with these offices to know how to get things done the right way, in the proper order to prevent you from running away in tears. HUGE HUG, I BELIVE in your dream!

Sadly I saw this coming. I knew when the water was coming out of the backyard you were in trouble. Old doesn't always equate with quality, there were plenty of hacks in the good old days. My house was built in 1936. My sewer line was "connected" to the street with old shirts😳. When it failed (shocking) a huge sink hole formed in the road. You can't fix stupid...

Hang in there Kaleb! You are doing an amazing job sorting out the old girl. She appreciates it and so do we. Thank you for your efforts. You are an inspiration and a wonderful example to the world of what a positive attitude can achieve. Are you going to sort the sewer out first, or the mansard, as you said they were both pressing? And I assume you only have so much in the way of funds.

Oh I am so sorry about the sewer line mess! Mojo that it gets as resolved as painlessly as possible! (And I'm now somewhat selfishly glad my city required a sewer line inspection as part of the required property inspection as I also have terracotta pipes, fortunately intact.) Unfortunately I also know how these things can be super frustrating--we got a SURPRISE!! whole house require because the scoundrels that owned this place knew just how to hide the horrors from the inspectors. (If I ever see them I may throttle them with my bare hands.) Took a long time to build back up after that fun, but we did and we're moving on to other house projects! Hang in there!

Like others have said, I think that piece of china is restaurant china, which was made thick like that piece you have. The family would have most likely used a better quality china in their home. So sorry about these new sewer issues. Perhaps a community advocate group or your local historical society can advise you on the best way to deal with the city to get them moving on this. We are rooting for you!

How my heart breaks for you. This situation with the sewer is a must that needs to be fixed. I wish I could help financially but being a widow living on a fixed income all I can give is my prayers n continue to be your biggest fan on Utube. I’m amazed at how far you had to go down to your sewer line, 10 feet seems really deep. I live in Florida on central west coast n I know my cast iron pipes are down about 3 feet n it won’t be long before they’ll need to be replaced. The stone wall is looking so good after you replaced the some of the mortar. It’s gonna look so nice once you get that bead board back up. I have to agree on the piece of plate. I believe it’s definitely from a restaurant. I started collecting pieces of them. I don’t have the decorative pieces. I love mine. I can put it in the oven n even in the microwave. Caleb, my prayers are with you my friend n I know everything is going to work out well. You are an amazing guy n you truly impress me at all that you do. I admire your love for your city n this beautiful house you call your home n museum. Know that there are many of your fans care n want to see you make your dream come true. ♥️👍😊🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Kaleb..... prayers to you during this time. I feel for you and the struggle.... its not easy being a home owner, manufactured or otherwise. I get frustrated because I can finance a new bed, but not a new roof.... so frustrating! now you know why so many people abandon their property when they have issues like the plumbing problems... when I lived in my last home I had raw sewage backing up under my mobile home and that wasn't fun, thank god I was able to sell the house and the buyer moved it... the park later closed 8 years later because of the sewer issues and age....I hope you can get yours done this year. the roof and the sewer are the big things for you this year, I pray you can get it all done this year and at a decent price... HUGS to you, Kim, and the dogs! keep up the great work! we all love you and the project! TTL!

Kaleb are you living in the property??? If you are then they have to fix this as it will be a health Hazard I think you could push it that way, I know sometimes you stayed over to work late, but are you there most of the time. This happened to me as my sewerage would constantly flood into back yard, and had to keep getting the guy out to unblock the line, eventually they put a camera down found it was a broken pipe, So the local council had to come check as broken on there side. phew as it would have cost me a small fortune, and as we lived there my Daughter was expecting a baby in te next 2 weeks, so i pushed them on that, got it done in 5 days, Normally it would be weeks and weeks. Good luck you are both doing great stuff, It will work out. Hugs Dede xxxx

So sorry to learn of the sewer project spiralling out of control, but you will rein it in. If all your subscribers sent you $.50 you would have ample funds. Just a thought. The pedestal for the Statue of Liberty was paid for in small donations. As to the china, there is a company called Replacements that can help in identifying old patterns. They have a website. I sent you and Kim an antique Theodore Haviland tureen. It is an early one and is exemplary of what many late Victorian tables were ser with. I think I once caught a glimpse of it in the built in china closet. So, you have a sample already.

With the crockery, I have my great grandmother's dinner set. It's Royal Dalton "Carnival" design. It would be from around the late 1800's as my grandparents were born in 1900. I thinknyou will findnthe sewer line was broken and the water has washed the soil away from the power pole. The power company will need to inspect it and may re-locate it as the ground is unstable.

I think the roof is the main fix. You can use a portable camper toilet and buy bottled water but if you have water damage, you're going to have more problems, mold and it's going to cost more to fix. Roof first.

Spiteful option: connect the plumbing properly on your property to empty into that void near the utility pole--as it would, if serviceable pipes still existed there--and whatever comes out of it becomes the power company's problem.

Wow, that's a lot to deal with! Sewers aren't ever cheap or easy. We had a problem similar with the city's old clay pipes had collapsed and the sewage completely flooded our lower floor as the sewer main that several of the neighborhood lines fed into was right next to our house, and the collapsed section was past that main. It was a bad situation and extremely costly and when we moved out, the city STILL hadn't fixed their line! May your sewer issue be resolved much more easily! I looked around online, and it seems the pottery pattern was popular in the Georgian era, which would make sense, as China was usually an heirloom passed down. There are some sites that sell bits and pieces of old China, but you might check out Replacements Ltd. Good luck on your treasure hunting!

The piece of plate you found looks to be restaurantware. Something that was used in restaurants. You can tell by the thickness of the porcelain or ceramic. So if you’re looking for that exact pattern, search under “Restaurant Ware”. Hope that helps. 👍🏾

Hang in there Kaleb! If anyone can make it happen, you can. Also is it possible that the spigot leading into the neighbors yard was shared water access with the neighbor? Since the two families worked together and built their houses at about the same time, maybe they combined their plumbing and shared the same cistern? I know nothing about sewers or pipelines, but I have heard that some older homes share a cistern between 2-3 houses. Maybe there is even another access point to the street buried under there. But that would probably mean a lot of extra digging with no guarantee that there is a connection and I don’t know if you are allowed to dig on the neighbors side until you own that land. Just another mystery to the house. But seriously hang in there…you are doing incredible things and what seems overwhelming today will be a great accomplishment in your future.

Haven’t read all the comments but wondered if someone suggested that you address the moisture barrier on the outside walls? Or has that been addressed around the foundation? Everything you have undertaken are big ticket items; plastered, floors, woodwork, wiring, stonewalls, so the sewer line and roofing is just one more hurdle. You have the patience of a saint, so just take it one step at a time as you have been doing.
