This is what KZfaq is for.. I’m a firm believer that if you have an extensive knowledge on a particular subject, it’s your responsibility to share that knowledge and pass it on to future generations .. diesel tech Ron is a perfect example, he may be dead and gone, but his knowledge on Diesel engines isn’t lost with his death , and he continues to educate people about issues with these engine even after he’s gone .. the main reason you make these videos to help guys like is .. sure you may make a few bucks off the videos, but life isn’t free , and at least the money isn’t coming out of our pockets .. much love and appreciation man, I just bought a 96 f350 , and your videos are going to help me out immensely , thank you brother 🙏

Very very helpful. Going through my first 7.3 right now. Everything I am don’t to it is more reliability based, so not building a race truck. I really wanted to see the internals because I kinda knew how it looks inside there - but this is definitive and very helpful.

I was just looking for "cranking no start" trouble shooting info for my 7.3 but stuck around for this whole video just bc of you cut and dang head open, painted the thing and then articulated all kinds of 7.3 wisdom, all good like. Keep up the good work. Thanks

So Steven/ Mr Cox whatever 🤔, Just wanted to say you've helped me a lot with your videos. I've Worked construction most of my life have a CDL and therefore driven a lot of deasles but in the last year bought my first I can call my own (02, 7.3) I've tinkered with gass engines to the point others consider me a decent mechanic (others, as far as I'mconcerned"I'm just a monkey with a wrench that scores a banana here and there") I haven't torn down and rebuilt an engine yet. So how you walk us through your view of the projects you post really helps me out so thanks!!! Best wishes Jim

Great video for sure! I overheated my 7.3, developed a bad knock. All injectors check out ok, I pulled them and found most of the lower o rings toasted and shriveled up. New o rings, went to clear the cylinders of oil and fuel before putting injectors in... found coolant in a few of the cylinders. I immediately suspected cracked injector cups. Well - this video explained precisely what the heck happened in there. Time to order an injector cup set! Thanks man.

Imagine two 1969 L-88 engine cut away’s that is the Corvette 427 CID... one was cut up in Saginaw Michigan at the tech school for auto mechanic and skilled trades, the other was done by students who attended SWOVCC South- West Oakland (County in Michigan very close to Detroit, Walled Lake actually) Vocational Career Center. Another of theses donated engines from GM was in my Auto Shop at Farmington High School, I was a VOC Auto III Independent Study student... Fall of 1986 Open House was the last time that the Engine was Started by me it had the original 4bbl carb and air cleaner cover with “455 HP” on top... the fact that that beast put out more than 560 HP and was Stock in the late 60’s makes me shake my head... the label and De-Tuning was done to reduce auto insurance cost for the purchasing public... so GM Fudged some Numbers, no surprise... but since then and since the 70’s EPA mandating cleaner Air our fuel standards went down and oil companies purchased as many patients for fuel Economy technology that has crippled our industry from 100 MPG cars!!! It’s kind of funny but not to hear an NPR (National Public Radio) show Hoasted by IRA GLASS, of all the technology that was available in the 70’s that Disappeared and was only subject of rumor mill and disbelief... one of those stories hit close to me growing up... a friend who’s Dad worked for GM, and he had a 50 MPG carburetor that would work on a V-8. I wanna describe it, but he was hit with a lawsuit when we were in HIgh School. Caused quite a hardship for him and their family...

My 7.3 is the old stroke. 1994 I.D.I. Turbo. Lately getting diesel fuel into the oil pan. Seems I am looking at pulling the injectors and installing new seals "Oil Seals" I sure like the way you explained that cut away cylinder head with color codes sure help me understand more even though your model is direct injection while motor is indirect injection but still leaning on a worn out seal. Not sure about them cups never been that far down before on this old stroke. Got 300K on the engine but the trans only seem to barely make 100K each as it seems the turbo indirect design has too much pony for the old Ford ED04. Kinda wish it was a 5 speed manual on the F350 4x4 6 pack long bed truck. The old stroke uses less pressure but the seals are important and so is holding down the fuel delivery line as I learned at higher rpm that can rattle loose then breaking a line finally figured out to tame them lines with proper rubber mounting and clamps that someone took off the engine before I bought big blue way back in 2005 for 8K. Thanks for putting up all the videos over the years I do watch them and enjoy them and sometimes I get out a fix something!

I been building two 7.3s for my 2000 F350, for two years... I put in a reman with 38k on it that I got at an auction. It was in a state maintenance vehicle ... It has a problem with cylinder 2, 3 and 8 .... Brand new injectors with EBPV deleted... When I accelerate it, ALL cylinders fire very well, but I still feel a slight thump, thumping in the firing... So... that led me to start rebuilding my original 7.3, which I am in the tear down stage of right now ... Even though I know the systems EXTREMELY well ... I have never seen the detail surrounding the cups ... Now I will know what I am looking at when I rebuild my heads for the first time ... Are the new stainless steel cups worth installing? Or stick with the brass? And is there better brass cups that hold up longer? Thanks for cutting that head open.. really interesting.

7.3 and 6.0 injectors are not the same, they don't even resemble each other the 6.0 injector is a much physically smaller injector compared to the old 7.3 injector. 00-03 7.3 injectors flow 145cc and are a split shot design. The 6.0 injectors flow 135cc and can fire up too 5-7 times during the powerstroke, a much more high tech design. Great video though, thank you for elaborating the glow plug and injector misconceptions.

Any update on a rebuild kit you would recommend? Can worn out injectors cause a lot of smoke when idling. Calms a bit when engine gets warmed up. While warming it smokes white in a good amount. 2000 7.3L Just bought, last owner had it for 10 years, never did anything major to the engine. Wonder where I should start? Loss of power is definitely there. Very sluggish
