Күн бұрын

Welcome to What Yacht To Do, a Great Loop Documentary. Today, (October 24, 2021) Rev and Sam are moving on their Great Loop Route from our incredibly serene anchorage at Savannah, Tennessee over to Counce, Tennessee. Unfortunately, we ran aground trying to leave the anchorage. On this route, we went through the Pickwick Lock and stayed at Grand Harbor Marina.
We are cruising around America's Great Loop for a second time and selected a 1999 Carver 504 named the Here's To Us!! as our Great Loop boat. So much goes into Great Loop planning and we share every trip with you. Welcome aboard!
Sign up for our newsletter at WhatYachtToDo.com to stay in touch and receive tips and tricks and hear about resources for your own Great Loop adventure.
Here are a few resources that we used for the trip: www.whatyachttodo.com/resources/

Good channel. Interesting video. I use an extra margin of safety as a result of my old Navy days, and insist that we always keep a fathom (6’) under the keel. Any sounding that comes close to a fathom, it’s all stop, then gently reverse to take the way off, assess the situation while DIW to make sure we’re not aground, then slowly back her down along my original track back to deeper water (do not try to swing her around as you could ground the stern in the shoal water that was just ahead). Happens a lot. Good luck.

What a great lesson about decision-making in deteriorating conditions. I once got us in a very bad situation in a car, so I can relate to being very upset with myself for allowing it to happen. Like you, my wife was with me. God protected us, we weren't stranded, but our relief of deliverance was mixed with my embarrassment. I apologized to her repeatedly for taking her into that situation. Again like you, my wife was much more gracious about the situation than I could permit myself to be. This was about 6 years ago and even then, I had begun to contemplate doing the loop; hence, my great appreciation for your channel. Taking to heart my experience then thinking ahead to what we hope to do in the next handful of years, I determined to apply this lesson. Now having seen your experience really reinforces that lesson I (hopefully) learned on that road those years ago. Thank you for sharing the less 'glamorous' aspects of your experiences. This may very well save someone from a much more dreadful situation.

Hi Bob, thanks for sharing that. It is amazing how the mind works in these situations. I have done a lot of work with psychometrics and know something about my inherent problem solving style, and this is a classic case of when i should have tempered my actions, but alas. We hope by airing our ordeal it will help others when faced with this. When I was in the USAF, when the weather was too bad to fly, we had Hangar Flying Talks where we would go around the room and tell ordeals that we had gotten ourselves into - there was a safe no retribution zone in those days - the commander endorsed it. It was great to hear from other pilots so we might not repeat stupidity. Have a great week. Sam

It just goes to show, that no matter how long you have been doing this, bad things can happen. You did not panic, you got help, and you got on your way! We are all guilty of going against ourselves when we set a limit and then exceed it...sometimes you get away with it, but we should always trust our first instincts ...they are usually the right ones! Thanks for a great learning video!

Welcome to the "Runaground" group. When I got my first boat, an old-timer told me, there are two kinds of people who runaground, those who have and those who lie and say they haven't! I ran aground twice on my sailboats in San Diego. the first time, my wife said "what does the depth sounder say?" I looked at it and replied, "0!" The second time it was right in front of a hazard/shallow marker, not thinking. Both times I was able to reverse and back out. Awesome video too, especially with the cover video shot from ashore, almost made like a movie. Hey Rev, you're in good hands with a very good Captain. Rick

In the 60s and 70s I thought the TN River was my playground. My uncle had a small boat repair shop at Eastport, so I got to take some nice ChrisCrafts and others for a test ride. I am now 70. Just so all you Loopers know, most rescue squads are regular guys and gals who volunteer to do everything from from grounding to drownings. Please ask if they could use a few dollars for their gas and equipment cost. Best wishes from Tishomingo County, Ms.

Winter pool on the rivers and lakes presents its' own challenges that require much more planning and diligence. Luckily you didn't go hard aground on the mud bar. Never go by the charts when on a lake or waterway during winter pool. You owned it Sam and took the hit on your pride with a smile. When in doubt, put your dingy out and have it lead the way checking water depth.

I once ran a boat aground. Made a turn on the wrong side of a buoy at the point two channels met in the waters north of Hilton Head and south of Beaufort, SC. The boat was a Wellcraft Nova 25 XL with a couple of big Mercruiser sterndrives. We sat high and dry till the tide changed later in the day. All kinds of people visited the sandbar we were on and we were told people ran aground there all of the time. That was no doubt true because there were numerous boat tracks in the soft sand. We had a nice day exploring the bar and talking to people looking for shells or just enjoying the day. When the tide came in, in a big rush, we floated off, I fired up the engines, took it slow at first to see if all was well with them, once we were convinced they were fine we were back at speed. No hull breaches. We made it safely back to the dock at Hilton Head. Another grounding I was a party to, was one of the Coast Guard cutters I was assigned aboard. We were slowly picking out a passage in a part of tte Bahamas not well charted. The grounding was minor too with no damage and the recent CG Academy graduate LtJG did not lose his captaincy.

Captain Sam, it's better to have a bruised ego than a broken boat.... As my flight instructor told me after I did a pre-flight ( I spent a few hours memorizing it, set up Campbell's soup can's labeled) from memory, I saw you pre-flight but I didn't see the check list, Do it again... I had the check list in hand from that point forward, and I use a check list when I get ready to ride the Harley too.. People razz me for it but I would rather take the razzing than a huge bill... My wife and I boated on the Mississippi for years before moving to Lake Superior on our 89’ 340 SeaRay, in those situations, while exploring unknown waters, I put her on the fore deck with a extendable pole as my depth finder instead of waiting till it’s possibly to late, just an idea for the future! We did rescue one 30’ boat with 6 people on it on the river on time, way hard aground!

@@WhatYachtToDo Well the important part to me is that no one was injured, no equipment was damaged and the captain learned a lesson, everyone has done things they wouldn’t have done a second time. Look at what you learned and it didn’t really cost much other than your ego! The other thing I believe I would have done was launch the tender and done some recon before proceeding! A small depth sounder on your dingy or a lead line 20 feet long, and a recon dingy trip will usually show the way ,or not as may apply. Lance Hayson, Whitianga, New Zealand. Note anyone boating in shallow water will sooner or later touch the putty. Better not to do it when yacht raceing (from experance)

Hey, just wondering as I see a dinghy on your stern, why you didn't just put an anchor out and kedge off ? Also it tis the horsepower on that small boat that matters..

Good morning, My wife and I watch you all the time. We too are wanting to do the loop and we are looking at boats right now. I noticed you have a 506 carver. I know it has a bridge clearance of about 21ft. Is that correct? and if so how are you avoiding the one bridge that is suppose to be only 19.5 ft clearance? Thank you both so much for your videos and stay above water. Thank you Terry & Ruth
@WhatYachtToDo
@WhatYachtToDo Жыл бұрын
Hello Terry and Ruth. I have heard of the Carver 506 making it under that bridge. The bridge is actually charted at 19.7. We have a Carver 504. The manufacturer data for our boat says 18.9, however we have measured it at 18.2 and have gotten it down to about 17.2 by a slim mount on the radar. I have written extensively on that bridge and air draft. See this blog post.www.whatyachttodo.com/how-high-can-my-boat-be-for-the-great-loop/ Also since you are planning the Great Loop you may want to check out online courses at. www.GreatLoopAcademy.com Cheers Sam and Rev 😎

That's a problem I can see with anchorages. You have to get off the main channel and into skinnier water, so there's always a chance of that.

When I purchased my first motorcycle, a friend told me there are two types of cyclists - those who have put the bike down and those who WILL put the bike down. Mine went down when a truck blew a line and put an oil slick in front of me. Fortunately it was at very slow speed. Minor damage to the bike, only a scraped knee and a severely bruised ego. Well there may be two types of loopers …. those who have been aground and …. well you know. You have to have some excitement once in a while as long as all ends well.

We've all done it. I've gotten stuck on sand bars two different times. Had to wait for high tide in both cases. Good news is you were able to get out of there pretty quickly with everyone's help. Did you get stuck while using the bow thruster to turn around or were you already stuck and trying to get off with the bow thruster? Could you not reverse off because of the current? Some may not have posted themselves getting stuck like that. Thanks for sharing. Safe travels, Brian.
@WhatYachtToDo
@WhatYachtToDo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian, Thanks for your note. Yes, was already stuck and thought turning it broadside with the thruster would help me catch more current, but that did not work. Probably could have hit reverse on the port engine in retrospect. A very difficult video to make and watch. Cheers, Sam
