Journey is one of the few bands that sound EVEN BETTER live imho! There's an energy, a finesse and just a larger than life quality to Steve's vocals and Neil's guitar when they're live that somehow don't quite pick up in the recordings. So yeah Andy & Alex, def recommend doing some live tracks if you can. Pretty much anything at Houston 81 is fantastic! Everyone brings up Mother Father, and it def deserves to be. But glad to see the commenter here bring up Stone in Love -- that song is an underrated classic, and that performance is phenomenal.

On Nov. 3 1991 I along with 300,000 wonderful music fans attended "Laughter, Love & Music " Bill Grahams memorial service at Golden Gate park after he along with 2 others were tragically killed in a helicopter crash. I was a Dead Head and liked Journey on a sing along with the radio kind of level. Many Bay Area bands played...Jackson Browne, Tracy Chapman,Crosby,Stills, Nash & Young, the Dead, Credence Clearwater, Santana. Robin Williams hosted. Steve Perry stepped up to the mike and said..".I know you're not all Journey fans, but even if your not please, please sing along. Let's show how much this city loved Bill and the joy he brought to us" They then performed "City By the Bay" Perry's ethereal voice had me in tears. It was truly magical. A big airtanker flew over and dropped flowers on the crowd as they performed. I've been to hundreds of concerts over the years but this...especially the crowd singing.....lit lighters raised to the sky, along with Steve Perry was really one of the coolest moments EVEAAAAAHH. Steve Perry is so unique in his upper range, that it is tough to cover Journey songs. You start playing a Journey song, and do a reasonable job with the instrumental - but then your cover band singer comes in, and you realize you are never going to try and play the song in front of anyone. Due respect to the cover band singers, but if you find a singer that can due justice to a Steve Perry vocal, that's a different level of singer.

Journey is the tale of two, well now three, bands. Early on before Steve Perry joined, they were a California jam band. It's understandable seeing as Greg Rolle and Neal Schon formed the band after playing with Santana for years. Once Steve joined and contributed to writing songs the band noticed that more women were showing up at gigs, instead of a bunch of sweating guys. As for early Journey here goes - Lights, Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin', Anyway You Want It, Feeling That Way/Anytime to start. When Greg left and Jonathan Cain, of the Babys, joined the stuff got a bit more commercial due to it being the height of MTV. And YES Steve perry is the voice, I've had the pleasure of seeing three of the greatest rock vocalists live in my life Steve Perry, Ann Wilson and Freddie Mercury.

Journey actually started out as a jazzy prog band. Their sound underwent a major metamorphosis when Steve Perry joined in 1977. They truly hit superstar territory when their original keyboardist left in 1980 and was replaced by a much more pop-oriented songwriter. Wheel in the Sky is from the first album with Perry.
