I like the bright lighting. There are too many series where they try to make it super dark and it only really works on OLED screens. I want to see what is happening. My mind can fill in the darkness. LOTR is never that dark. LOTR portrays darkness using blue light but it doesn't feel off while watching. You may find it weird now, but you will probably adjust without noticing.

Lighting refers to more than just how bright a scene is. I think he was referring to how everything in some scenes is lit evenly. Which IMO does make it look cheaper.

I also like the lighting. Jordans writing style was light hearted hence the misconceptions about the target audience. Maybe they'll have the lighting like this to sort of represent his writing style but what's actually happening will be book accurate in terms of violence and dark scenes etc.

SAME! Will be nice to actually SEE things instead of just darkness and shadowed faces. I also think this is a good place to start lighting wise, helping to create an atmosphere as the series moves into darker times.

My problem with the lighting is that it looks too much like the Shannara Chronicles or one of the Netflix fantasy shows, it has that Soap Opera effect that just looks cheesy. Hopefully like others say I'll quickly get used to it and won't notice!

I love the idea of the lighting keeping true to Jordan's tone in prose, in that its a bright portrayal of a much darker text, which is portrayed rather well in some brief glimpses in this trailer. A bright, colourful fantasy world which juxtaposes the darker stuff happening on screen seems to be a wonderful way to interpret Jordans prose and how it views the sometimes horrific stuff that is actually happening.

Thanks God Zack Snyder is not the showrunner then. That guy doesn't understand nuance at all. Everything would be gray and dark, and Rand would kill innocent people in the first episode while explaining to us how much life is dark and full of terrors.

I always saw a blue-ish anime lighting for a lot of it, like the ambient lighting would be raised up a bit and in a blue tone which means the dark areas are slightly lighter and bluer --but that just my head-cannon in general, I guess

@@ratoh1710 I don't mind bright lighting, but it puts very high demands on that everything looks perfect. Instead of just a table and the three characters around it look good, now every character and every table and wall, floor, pillar etc etc have to look great.

I love that the trailer isn´t ashamed of being colorful. I don´t like how in GoT they didn´t let characters from Essos such as Dario have dyed extravagant hair in order to keep his character design cohesive with the rest of the cast. I think details like that damage the worldbuinding a bit, since the realization of culture is diminished. I realize that it could feel misfiting, but I think that works in favor of making the world feel vast. To allow things that might be steticaly displeasing for the audience, but showcase culture. ASoIaF is my favourite series and I really apreciated the looks of foreign characters in the books. I do undestand the change, but I love that WoT seems like it won´t take that route.

I respect your opinion, but I think the candy-coloured look is kinda off-putting. Everything looks too clean and fake and unnatural like the whole thing was filmed in a studio in front of a green screen. If you watch any of the Dune trailers, there's barely colour in any of them but the universe it presents still looks more alive and real than this one.

Agreed, way too saturated a color palette for the Aes Sedai. Which is funny because the rest of the costumes feel grounded. Also why are these women monochromatic? You can have a lot of a given color in a dress without making it a singular color, throw some white or neutral colors in there

Spoilers: I think the shots of logain breaking out if the cage is covering what he was up to as a false dragon. In the books we meet him at camelyn when he has already been subdued by the reds and is being paraded through the streets on his way to the white tower. However, we are told how difficult he was to capture and that he killed multiple aes sedai in the process. If, as the show runners have said, they are going to inflate his role in the show, it would make sense to show us this process and give us a clear picture of how powerful and dangerous he was prior to gentling. I feel like this explains why his promo shots were taken clearly outside of camelyn and why a seemingly grieving warder is launching himself at Logain, even though it looks goofy it kinda makes sense for a grieving warder. This is all just guess work obviously and I could be completely off the mark, but that’s all I could think of unless they are making significant changes to his arc.

If the battle outside is at the same place as Logain breaking free then Nynaeve is there. It could mean that the party ends up at the same place as the Aes Sedai with Logain. Would be quite a big change in the story setting up Logain way more important. Which i like :D

My opinion: to piggyback and trying not to give away things, so pardon the cryptic-ness: They still need to accomplish that other something with Logain. And that could be the beginning of the reveal. Not to mention setting up that 'other somethings' importance throughout and much much later.

I believe Nyneave pushing Egwene into the river is something with wisdom training. It’s backed up with her floating down the river and when they talk of using the power for females in the books it’s about letting the river take you and not fighting it.

Re: Logain army- Immediately this makes sense. They're likely doing the entire Logain capturing sequence in order to strongly divert attention onto him being the Dragon. They're setting him up as the Dragon in order for a serious plot twist

I think that scene you thought was gorgeous (and in Portugal) was filmed in Slovenia (Europe), precisely Bovec! Also that river in the beginning is Soča which is extra cold but sooo beautiful 😊 I'm really happy Emond's field was filmed here, our nature is really outstanding.

Egwene coming out of the water when the narration says “become legend” give me the vibes that this is a memory of Eldrene Sedai that has stuck in Emonds Field. And she is the reincarnation of Eldrene. That’s why the ritual involves the 5 colors and it implies wisdoms have turned that memory into ritual.

This has nothing to do with the women's circle. Her hair is unbraided.... 7 Ajah colors. Either this is a Dream.... or... we are seeing a newly made for the show ritual for Accepted in the tower. A plain dress is worn and as she emerges with it, is stained with streaks of the 7 Ajah colors... kinda like a tie dye. I am taking a leap, but I think part of the ceremony of becoming Accepted involves this pool and that becomes your dress as an Accepted. A Dream is the simpler explanation. But I don't think this is the Women's Circle at all. If it _IS_ a Dream... it could be a clever ploy. Focus a bit more on Egwene at first, hint at some great future for her, prophecies to be fulfilled etc... (all true)... and draw attention away from Rand for a while.

I agree about the lighting, but also I think the brighter and yellower lighting and mood will really help to distinguish Wheel of Time from other shows like the Witcher and GoT which have a more edgy feel. I don’t think WoT needs an edgy feel. I think that type of show has already been played out

So, about the silly jump with 2 axes at Logain. My take on it is that it's the Warder going berserk because he lost his Aes Sedai to Logain. That would explain the all out attack while it's clear he can't win.

I love the lighting and anticipate it getting darker as the series goes on. LOTR did a similar thing in lighting progression with the advancement of the story. Fellowship is bright, with the shire, lothlorien etc, Two towers is darker, and then ROTK is gritty, grim. Until the end and it’s light again.

Based on the trailer, what books do you think this season will adapt? Im about to begin the book series and dont want to be spoiled. Im probably doing a 2 year read along with my brother and some friends. Exactly 24 months, 1 book p/month and 1 month in between except books 7-10 which will either be 2 per month or no resting month in between. The thing is, my father loves fantasy/medieval/scifi movies and TV series, and is kinda a tradition that we watch some together (lit we power-watched MCU together before Infinity war xD). So Id like to share time with my father watching this one (he wouldnt read the books). Do you suggest to wait this 2 yeards until I finish the books to show him this series?

@@august4471 on the official WOT Instagram, they had a q&a and they said they will be combining books per season just because it will take them way too long to do 1season for every book. If we’re also looking at the names of each episode, the second half of the season looks like it dives into book 2 (someone correct me if I’m wrong). I think you should at the very least read book 1 and 2. If you’re able to wait a couple months after the season comes out till you catch up, that’s my recommendation. 😊

The only thing that I really disagree with is Daniels dislike of the lighting - I just think of game of thrones which was ridiculously too dark. I don't really see this as an overcorrection either. I could be wrong, but I like being able to see what I am watching.

We closed all the blinds and turned up the brightness of the tv as high as possible and we still weren’t able to make out most of what was happening at night and inside 😫 so I very much appreciate shows who light their night scenes in a way that you can actually see something and from the way the trailer looks WoT will do that

I’m pretty sure this is Karene Nagashi’s warder and she is killed by Logain. We saw her in the photo showing his capture, he attacked his captors here, and i think the crying guy was the jumping axe guy at logain.

Having Logain break his shielding is 100% intentional foreshadowing for Dumai's Wells. As for the cliff push at the beginning, it seems like Nynaeve will be administering a ritual to bring Egwene into womanhood where she must learn to flow with the river, which will also be instructive toward learning saidar later.

Completely disagree on your view of the physical relationship between Rand and Egwene. The books are so clear that Rand, Mat, and Perrin have "country bumpkin" values. It's plastered all over the first few books and doing this gives me the impression that they are already exposed to the world not shielded from it. Part of Rand's character by the end is shaped by his country bumpkin humble upbringing.

Yeah, I agree. When Rand has sex with Aviendha for the first time, he expects to marry her and is confused that she doesn't go along with it right away. And then he describes how someone in his village had sex before marriage and their marriage was rushed as fast as possible and they were punished by the village elders to the point where supposedly neither of them could sit down at their wedding... Which is weird but definitely shows how casual sex isn't okay in their culture.

This is an awesome cap to me finishing the Dragon Reborn this morning! I’m treading lightly in comment sections on KZfaq, but this teaser has gotten me even more excited to finish the series! First scene, of the first official footage, is Egwene. Lets jump ahead to how it all ends 14 books later, and think about the fore-shadowing of her role. Nyaneave casts her into the water (most likely a woman's circle right of passage), she floats down to a pool, and comes up through multi-colored paint, causing her shift to take on a multi-colored pattern. That is also heavy fore-shadowing of how her character arc develops. Just, her cut scenes, alone have so much in them. Tossed into the water, afloat with no real footing for a time, she re-gains her footing, and a multi-colored decision is made, literally as the narrator says "that be come legend!".

Nyneave is the one pointing the dagger at Lan, That is Loial or Thom in the background when Rand, Mat, Nyneave, and Lan ride towards the way gate. Judging by the size difference I would say Loial. See if you can spot him. It's bugging me that Mashadar is not glowing.

@49:00 - The leaping Warder. Notice Logain in a shield in the left corner, but to the right, behind the Warder, is an Aes Sedai held by threads of air. You can see a channel-thread "tornado" above her and how she is completly still. The leap could just be to break Logain's concentration on the Aes Sedai so she can break free.

I don't know if it has been mentioned but the shape of the axe is that of a bearded axe, mostly associated with vikings, just not double headed, the cutout allows you to grip at the head and use the blade to shave away at wood. Variations on the design are still used today.

One thing I thought was lacking was a White Cloak presence. Then at 1:18 of the trailer, turning the corner chasing Rand and Matt. Only visible for a couple frames. A lot of white on the torso of whatever is chasing them.

Re: the lighting. If the normal color palette is relatively light, then there's a lot more different shades you can work with. You can go a lot darker in comparison to where you started off, without having to make it impossible to see what's happening like in the dark night episode in got.

So what you're saying is they will be able to better match the tone of certain moments with lighting than if they went darker from the beginning. I'm curious as to how the ways will look. I think it might be kinda like when Eleven from Stanger things is doing some of her psychic shenanigans, but with some terrain being outlined by the party's torches.

To be fair, it's the same excuse Jay Wilson (diablo 3 game director) gave when people were complaining that the game looked too bright, and I think most people would agree it didn't work out that way... But I still think the concept works, they just failed the execution (or the intention).

I appreciate the no spoilers. I have gotten through about 80% of the first book so I understand some scenes you talked about but not other stuff. The more I thought about it while reading the book the more I like Rosamund Pike for Morain. I like your enthusiasm for the trailer and I hope this show is worth the hype. This trailer is the reason I started the book.

The red and green sisters from the Alanna channeling scene are the same as the sisters stood in front of Siuan and the Hall later on in the trailer. Makes me think that these guys have been sent after Logain or he escaped from them. I can't think of any other reason for Red and Green sisters to be out and about together.

All the shots of Egwene in the water are so cool, the color foreshadowing is great. It may be literal, but they also make me think of Moraine teaching her to channel, being the shore that guides the Power, not forcing the flows, stuff like that. So awesome!

when daniel pointed out the weird sword from the forest fight I thought Saldean maybe which could line up with Taim escaping? it would make sense to present more than one false dragon.. dude crying over the ring has to be lews therin, why he has a aes sedai ring, I got no clue. Note: I know Taim is not freed by his followers so i know sure it quite fits, wishful thinking on my part mostly.

@@damp2269 no Ilyena was not an Aes Sedai but LTT would have worn the ring of the Tamyrlin, which was lost at the end of the Age of Legends. The ring of the Tamyrlin seems as though it was a one off. The show runners could have chosen to use the Tamyrlin’s ring as the blueprint for the modern serpent ring. Would make sense for them to tie the old school Aes Sedai to the ones in the current timeline, using a prop that is established in the first couple of episodes.

*Cautiously* excited after watching. I really want them to touch up that magic CGI - it has that TV-grade weightless entity feeling about it. But the cinematography itself is gorgeous and, judging from a bunch of the shots, it looks like they're putting a lot of emphasis on the different cultures of WoT.

That was definitely not a shawl on the Amerlin. It was a standing collar - from the brief glimpse there, I'd say it looked like an Elizabethan rabato modernized with an eye to the graceful, stylized drape of geisha kimono collars. I love it. Historybounding ftw!

It’s a really interesting fusion of elements of different historical dress. It’s just weird seeing Siuan in something so ornate when that is not in alignment with her character in the books. We’ll have to see what they do with her character outside of the costuming.

@@jessicavanrijbroek8283 I gave up on the books ages ago... Now in the last few weeks, I find out that the one that made me quit was the last of "the slog." I was reading them as they came out, and I just met my limit. Anyway, I don't really remember them well enough to speak to how well the design serves the character. But as pure design, it's definitely super intriguing. That particular dress seemed to be taking place in a VERY formal setting/ moment, though, so it might not even be intended to represent her character, only her importance.

The lightning may change throughout the series to match the mood. Who knows. The colors are not to bright and not to dark. Emondsfield looks vibrant. Shadar looks dark. For me it matches the feelings i had while reading the books. And one of the most important. It looks real. It looks not CGI at all.

@@MetalCharlo lol Yea there were some things that would break the immersion in the Witcher, especially the time hopping. I think season 2 begins the longer narrative focus from the books so it should be alot better. The new animated Witcher called Nightmare of The Wolf however was AWESOME!!
